The tru-arc snap rings that retain the piston pin in its place come out and then the pin mills a nasty gouge in the cylinder. Hope this is not your problem.

Had that happen to a 63/406 years ago. Puts a nice groove in the block and smoked like a chimney.

Ebay has some kits to make a 4100 mechanical look under vintage mr gasket they work well i have used them for years.
Had one of those on my 56 Ford Yblock back in the 60's. Recently I made one from memory for my 79 Ranchero. Had to tweak it some but it works fine.

While we're talking myths, I heard years ago that storing a block without the main caps installed would cause the block to "stretch" at the main journals. I put them back on to keep from losing/misplacing them. Nothing more frustrating than to see an ad for a block for sale without the main caps. I can see a set of main caps for sale from a "lunched" block but not the other way around.

I use them. There must be thousands of them laying around from guys installing a new camshaft and forgetting to put them back on. I don't know how many times I've looked down and there's the slinger just laying there. Of course I've already put the damper back on. Kinda like flaring a line then seeing the fitting you forgot to put on first.

Been awhile but when I was still working I ran across more than one F150 that had similar problems to the point of not running. On the ones I worked on there was a wiring problem in the main loom coming out of the firewall on the left side near the hood hinge. Buried in the loom is a splice where 4 main battery feeds ( yellow wires) are spliced together. You could start the truck up and pull, twist and bend the loom there to see if it acts up. Or you can slice open the loom there and eyeball the connection. I've seen them both completely corroded apart to just a little green dust around the splice.

I played that game with my 61. Needed the deeper locking tabs but they kept sending shallow ones. I had a 57 Ford at one time with the longer tabs and depending which car I drove I'd put the 57's cap on it. Finally saw a pic of a long tab cap on epay that fit some off the wall 50's car that looked like it would work. It was cheap so I picked it up and got lucky it worked.

I agree old school. I started out in the 60's using the stones for valve work. Sometime in the early 70's I picked up a set of cutters that did a fantastic job over the stones. I was sold. I stop by a friends machine shop and watch him do some awesome work with the cutters he uses. It certainly was the "Stone Age" back when I started.

« on: April 14, 2021, 07:43:47 AM »
The 61 Starliner I picked up a few years ago has a diaphragm clutch. Works fine but then I don't get into racing anymore. That said, I've never been a fan of those clutches. Starting to gather parts for a 427 for it and I think I'll include a long style clutch for it.

Received a package a while back from Amazon. Don't remember what it was but it was something small and light. Came in a huge box. Only weight you could feel was the box. Made a comment to the UPS driver. He just laughed and said "that's Amazon". On the other side, I wanted to buy a nos plastic dash from Greensales. They wanted to ship it freight. Shipping was as much as the dash. Told them to keep it.

That's where all of them were attached from the factory with that kind of bracket from the factory.
