FE Technical Forum / Re: Lifter Replacement

Another source of noise like that is the fuel pump if your still running one. The spring on the fuel pump arm breaks or just falls out and the arm just flops around making noise like a lifter. You can take a long screwdriver and listen to the fuel pump while it's running to confirm.

Ford has made their dealers buy tool kits for new models for as long as I can remember. Most of the tools in the cases went untouched. The tools you really needed and used would always end up in some guys tool box and it would become "his" tool.

Worked at Ford dealers over 40yrs. and never heard them referred to as FE's. In fact we never called them by their model lines (FE's, 335's, 385's). We always  called them by their cubic inches or later on liters. It was in the 90's when I heard the about the different model lines from a retired Ford employee that came to work as car porter.

Had a 56 Meteor Crown Vic way back when. Bought it from a Canadian friend that I worked with. I loved that grille it came with and I had 64 Fairlane tailights in it that gave it a "tunneled " look. Loved that car. Had to sell it in '68 when I got drafted. It's one of the cars I'd like to get back.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor stuck in block.
« on: October 24, 2023, 07:26:32 AM »
I recall working with my old man at the Ford dealer one FE dist. that wouldn't move. Being we were working on commission and the truck was a commercial vehicle we didn't have the luxury of spraying it down every few hours and tapping on it. We had to get the truck back on the road. We set the engine on the floor and started disassembling it for a new short block tapping/prying on the distributor occasionally but it wouldn't budge. Even with the oil pan off it wouldn't move tapping from below. I think my old man lost patience and broke the bowl on it prying but it wouldn't move. After he broke the bowl it was game on. He took a long punch and big hammer and wailed on it from the bottom. It finally came out in 3 pieces. I still remember him saying "huh, looks like it has a bad distributor" when it popped out.

Your original post mentioned "rear main seal replacement". In your picture of rust behind the slinger, what happened to the angled "grooves" in the crank where the seal rides? Back in the 60's my old man told me they were there to help direct the oil back towards the engine. Could the missing grooves be contributing to the leak? Maybe someone can explain whether the grooves, missing or not, could explain any difference it might make.

Worked at Ford dealers 40+yrs and replaced many coils on those but not too many boots. I'm impressed with the mileage you got with yours. With most all my time working with Ford brand parts I've usually stuck with those with good results.  If a vehicle came back with a part failure it didn't pay much. Plus I've found that a part made by the original company just fits better. Just my .02

Rebushing them was how we repaired them back in the day. I still have a "fishing tackle box" full of adjustable reamers I inherited from my old man. Almost kind of lost art for repair shops now. They all just send the spindles out to get it done.

Autolite group 27 was the battery those cars came with back in the day. Ran one for years in my 63/427

If I remember correctly you can only remove the crossover by pulling the entire intake manifold because the bolts come in from the bottom. After you get it off it's a great time to replace the spark plugs. They will never be easier to get to. Also I would replace any oily, deteriorating spark plug boots.

I used the 90° method on yblocks Ive run and had good results. Been using it on my latest FE build and seems to work OK. Reinstalling the 427 back in my 61 Starliner to fix my screw-up oll leak and I think I'll try Brent's method this time. Never was sure I was on the base circle when setting the valves.

I always liked the Goodyear Polyglass w/RWL. I recall the old front end mechanic where I worked mentioned in the late 60's that Goodyear would have a great tire if they ever got the lumps out of them.

When I need a part from a "fast food parts store" I'll look up what I need on their website 1st. Then I'll take the information to the store and tell the parts guy what I have and came up with this part number for it. Then I'll ask him to double ck my number to make sure its right. The number usually sends him right to the page and he confirms it. Saves me a lot of headaches.
