FE Technical Forum / Re: 35 spline axles
« on: April 04, 2017, 11:27:53 AM »
Do you have a brace on that stock housing?  I would suggest that if you don't.  If not, then maybe upgrade to a big housing(with brace) and then not have to worry.  I used to run my stock housing and I basically destroyed it going hi 12's.  I put a Moser housing(big tube, big end) under the car long ago.  Never a problem.  I put 35 spline in it from the get go, but the wagon had big bearing ends from the factory so it all fit easily.

33's would likely be fine with a footbrake car.

My guess is the Close ratio toploader is causing all the problems.  They were fine if you have 4.88 gears in the back and slicks from the 60's that spin real easy.

What for shocks are you running?  Traction devices?  You need to tighten things up to not allow so much bite.  Tighten the front end so it doesn't rise, tighten the rear so it doesn't plant the tire.

How about no burn out?  Skip the water, just stage and go.  A heavy clutch and no gear ratio is hard to get moving.

So is the car bogging off the line, is that the reason you want a deeper gear?  Yes, putting a bigger tire and equally more gear is not going to help, likely make it a bit worse.  You need some tire rotation(spin) to help keep the motor up in the power.

Plenty of the blower guys(like BDS, Hampton, etc) have made intakes using 4 bbl or 2x4 intakes.  As for air flow, I would not sweat it, it is being forced in under pressure.  I remember seeing catalogs with blower plates for sale to make your own.

Blue thunder makes a spacer for making room for stock distributors on an FE.  I run one with my car to run a stock distributor.  I've love to have one of those fancy offset distributors, but at $900 I just don't have the budget for it.

What about a Paxton or Vortech kit?  About 5# of boost would really make it a screamer.
I put a Vortech on my '96 F350/460 truck back when it was a year old.  Man, was that thing a BLAST to drive.  It ran 15.8 and that was knocking on the door of the Lightnings of the day.  Not bad for a big ol Dually.

The cost of QT has gone through the roof.  Even finding a deal on an older Lakewood is hard to do.

It sounds like you have the early small pattern Toploader.  That also has the smaller pilot diameter on the bearing retainer.   It will likely be tough to find a good bellhousing for that combination.  An early Lakewood might take care of it, but the pilot hole will be larger(like 1/4").  I think a larger bearing retainer will still bolt on the early case?  Been a while since I had to deal with this.

If you don't plan on hot rodding it, you could get away with finding an old cast bellhousing(early Fe with small bolt pattern).  I typically don't recommend that.  But I understand paying the cost for a blowproof anymore is a hard pill to swallow.

I've run Wiseco in all my motors.  No issues at all.  They are local so that is why the shop I use deals with them.  Heck my wagon even make it in their catalog a couple years ago in the FE section.

I've used a couple of the cube style.  One runs my Onan genset the other was on my '89 F150 when I converted it to carb.

No complaints as of yet.

I run a Mallory 140 on the wagon.  It's going on near 20 yrs now without issue(did I just jinx it?).

Holley Blue?  You can't get away from the noise!!!

Glad to hear you are coming Jay.

I have new tires coming, so I should be back on track for traction(unlike last year).  Though I found out that swapping sides is what screwed me up last spring.  Once I put them back the car went back to leaving straight.

Doing some dress work on the Mack this winter, but I have initial plans on coming to FERR.  Come rain, sleet, snow or dead of night.....(that covers most of the things you see racing in April).....LOL!

Keep an eye out for a 1969 F350 wrecker(390 powered) two tone paint.  Super, super restoration done by a fellow I know in PA.
Goes across the block 11am-12noon Thursday.

Ok, I realized it was a long distance thing but didn't know exactly what you had going on.  Thanks for the update, I'll pass it along.

I just got an Autometer wide band.  I had a $100 gift certificate from my racing and figured I woiud burn it up on one.   They are $199 list so for $100 I got one.  I have a narrow band in my black car with the blower that I bought years ago.  Since I just put it away for the winter I wont be able to play with it til spring.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Timing and vacuum advance - theory and practice?
« on: October 25, 2016, 11:53:05 AM »
I've never had any luck putting any vacuum advance on anything I own.  Even my stock '89 F150/302.  I converted it to carb, put Duraspark ignition on it.  I tried both manifold and ported and it didn't like either.  Ran like crap no matter what I did.  Left it all unhooked.  All the hot rods are mechanical since they don't have enough vacuum to worry about.

Like mentioned I'm sure if you spend some quality time tinkering you can make it work.  Me?  Nope.  Does it idle?  Yes.  Does it go like stink at WOT?  Yes.  Perfect, no other work needed.  ;D

FE Technical Forum / Re: Fe main caps.
« on: October 19, 2016, 09:28:32 AM »
With the tapered sides they cut in the block I'm betting it isn't done an old Bridgeport!!  Thus the pricey cost.
I think it is way overkill for a stock block.  If you want to spend that kind of money you might as well go aftermarket block and get crossbolt caps.
