FE Technical Forum / Re: crank thrust, I need some
« on: June 06, 2022, 02:52:35 PM »
Thats what I'll do.

Since I have your ear, I ran into another area of concern. Used low mile 2291 pistons, the pins fit free and smooth on one half of the piston but become very tight when fully installed. Like they must be forced in. Kind of at a loss as to why

FE Technical Forum / crank thrust, I need some
« on: June 06, 2022, 09:45:06 AM »
Doing a quick mock up yesterday D3 block fresh from machine shop, stock 390 crank turned .010 and .010. Fm125 bearings. The thrust bearings fit very tight in the block and the cap throw everything together for a measurement and I've got about .002 to .0025. Pulled crank and thrust bearings inspected deburred, resembled no change.  Reset top cap few times smacking crank back and forth no change.

Crank spins beautifully but not enough thrust clearance. What is the best way to gain some, remove thrust bearings and sand a little on the front side? Do these FM125 bearings normally fit that tight in blocks?

FE Technical Forum / Re: Carburetor pad angle
« on: May 19, 2022, 10:29:35 AM »
For my own clarification (I've seen these discussions come up before), is the 3 degrees down in front relative to the earth or to something else on the car (e.g. the bottom of the frame rail)?  Even on level ground, it seems like things like worn front springs, big tires in back, etc. would affect things.  So if measuring the bottom of the frame rail shows the front end down 1 degree, would you shoot for the pan rail to be down in front 4 degrees from level?

I realize it sounds kind of absurd to get down to this detail, but if we're only talking a specification of 3 degrees, being off 1 degree would amount to 33%.

Pat

Relative to a known plane i.e. the frame. Regardless of the frame sitting level the measurement is the difference between the two. Engine center line, or carb pad which ever you are wanting to control vs frame. Frame at 6 degrees down carb pad at 3 degrees down leaves you with 3 degrees of angle at the carb pad. Last one I did ended up somewhere 2 degrees based on the crank and 3 degrees on the carb pad. Which to have the carb pad perfectly level would have taken 4 degrees on carb and 3 on crank. But I wasn't concerned with the carb being perfectly level just not way off, more worried about crank centerline for drive line and packaging in the chassis reasons. But it can be easier to first level the frame on jackstands to 0 degrees.

FE Technical Forum / pin locks L-2291
« on: May 18, 2022, 01:30:23 PM »
Using a set of lightly used L-2291 pistons on a new build. (cleaning out under the bench) Figured I would get some new pin locks and unfortunately it appears the original LR-N540098 locks are no longer available nor can i find old stock. Anyone have a recommendation on what I can use in place of?

FE Technical Forum / Short water pump
« on: March 29, 2022, 09:32:59 AM »
Anyone make a short shaft water pump? Something to eliminate the couple inches sticking out the past the pulley groove. The idea of modifying the shaft and using a press fit power steering pulley is going through my mind.

A couple inches right at the water pump would really help me in some cooling fan options.

I am unable to find a good Motorcraft part number breakdown listing but here is the best I can remember.....Just be warned the only thing I can remember is that I don't remember.
B= 18mm thread diamerer (either cone seat or gasket seat)
R= is either "resistance style" or the depth of the electrodes
F= cone seat.
31 = heat range...on the cold side.

I believe this plug crosses to the Autolite 124 so it should physically fit in the standard FE head.
But be certain the threads and electrodes are not too long, or short.
If they look to fit, run them and check the heat annealing ring to be sure they are the right heat range for your needs.

I was leaning towards running the 124's before these fell in my lap. The electrode depth/stickout whatever its called looks identical to a 124.

FE Technical Forum / Re: removing a sleeve or 2
« on: March 25, 2022, 10:13:39 AM »
Ive welded them out replacement sleeves in diesel engines, a few of those where extremely tight and welding and or boring was the only solution, a sleeve puller wouldn't budge them. Never done it on a repair sleeve but I would think it would work the same. As noted above you don't want to use so much heat it fuses on the back side, other wise works well.

FE Technical Forum / sparkumplugs

A friend just gave me some NOS Motorcraft BRF31 spark plugs, about 30 of them.

I plan to run them in a fresh 390 with about 9 to 9.5-1 compression. Duraspark distributor hooked to an MSD digital 6 plus. Any flaws in this plan? anyone familiar with these old plugs? What little info I could find seems like these should work really well for the application.

For semi and agriculture I truly don't understand why nobody has gone diesel electric, like a train. Arguably one of the most efficient ways of transportation.  And something I would interested in owning.

Seems its either all IC or electric. Hybrid is being looked over anymore.  No way would I go with a 100% electric vehicle, but that's my prerogative.

I agree with what has been said, when did you flush the coolant, last? I had a few at work, not Ford, but GM dexcool. The stuff much too my amazement, had turned to jello inside the engine.

Dexcool is pure garbage unless its flushed regularly and often. Ive seen many issues from it. Especially in the diesel world, I don't care how "good" or "required" they say it is. I recommend anything using dexcool to change to something/anything else. Thing that surprises me is how many keep using it, its been a problem since it was introduced.

Edited to add, your original complaint sounds indicative of a headgasket to me. Which you have already figured out now.

Looks like the exhaust manifolds would work for twin Turbos. That is if you had room in your engine compartment.

That's exactly what I used. 1950 F1 pickemup truck

FE Technical Forum / Re: Starters

for just a decent stock starter i have had good luck at napa.i actually got a correct part number for a 428.has lasted many years with headers on the street,BUT,in a race or serious street power situation,i would go with the RobbMc. my dad put one on his fairlane 10 years ago and he dont worry at all anymore.

Is there actually a difference? If so I would be interested in that part number.
