Anybody have any experiences good or bad with this product http://www.jandssafeguard.com/safeguard.html Or anything for knock detection? Or am I overthinking it.

What brand/model number will work in truck application with an NP435. with mechanical shift fork. I am unsure of the differences most stuff is listed for top loaders of which I know nothing about.

FE Technical Forum / Oil Accumulator
« on: September 05, 2018, 01:12:32 PM »
Any pointers on installation for an accumulator? What are some of the different ways you guys have connected into the system, photos would be helpful too.

I have a 3QT Accusump, only reason I'm putting one in is for pre oiling I believe its taking to long to build oil pressure and I blame this on long turbo feed lines so figured an accumulator would be the most effective for this and general start up. Since I'm only really concerned with pre oiling can I get by with -4 line?  I do have one of those sandwich adapters used in FT applications for an air compressor I can use but it only has 1/4 npt supply also, that is if I'm looking at it correctly.

FE Technical Forum / Electric fan temp switch
« on: July 20, 2018, 10:39:28 AM »
Having issue with my cooling fan running all the time. When it does shut off its not for long. Lots of differing opinions on what temp switch should be used with certain degree thermostats. So I thought I would ask here, for more differing opinions!

Turbo 390 in a 50 F1, Champion 3 core drop in fit. (fits great too) Homemade flat shroud that covers entire surface but not as deep as I would have liked it, maybe 3/8" deep. One 14" high flow Spal and one 7.5" Spal. Both pulling. Only running the big fan as it seems to keep up fine, figured only kick the little one if it gets hot. Or thought run it all the time to reduce cycle time of the large one. Really need to add another switch or get a dual temp. Probably a dual temp, I'm out of ports.. Kick the little one in early then the big one is how I would really like it. Kinda like a 2 speed fan.

180* stat with couple small holes drilled for bubbles. Engine does not over heat, haven't seen it much above 200 usually around 190 to 195. Fan switch is 200 on and 180 off installed in thermostat housing. Used a 195 stat for awhile which I'm fine with but I'm trying to drop the temp a little for fueling reasons. (heavy ends in lpg fuel). Hence the 180*

Do I need a switch with a lower range? Say 185 on 175 off?? Need more airflow? I didn't think so since it doesn't overheat. If both fans are on it does seem to help but not much.

FE Technical Forum / Clutch problems
« on: July 11, 2018, 10:13:12 AM »
Well I have a problem, clutch slipped on me last night during some "testing" so I guess that's a good problem right??  :)

I rolled hard in the throttle at about 50mph and it let go probably around 70 or so. In 4th gear so 1:1 with 4.27 rear gear. If anyone wondered.

Current clutch stocker 3 finger, 11" if memory serves, fresh grind on the flywheel. Works and feels great, nothing wrong at all with it just couldn't hang on. What is the capacity of a stock type clutch? Or what kind of power does it take to blow through one while at speed? No idea what this engine makes power wise, be nice to have a half assed idea.

When the time comes to change it I plan on doing an SFI flywheel, I'm guessing it will be simpler to buy all at once anyway. McLeod?? Ive heard Centerforce is junk. Only performance type clutches Ive dealt with are multi disk slippers and company's that specialize in those.

FE Technical Forum / Pressure vs. time
« on: June 15, 2018, 08:40:17 AM »
No this isn't about a Cummins PT pump, thank god lol.

Oil pressure, how long from engine start until you see the gauge physically move??  I'm curious how my 390 compares to the average.

FE Technical Forum / Crank pulley
« on: July 14, 2017, 11:19:03 AM »
Does anyone know what crank pulley offset I need in BBC bolt pattern (ATI Balancer) Alternator only. Not really concerned what material, probably steel I can't think an aluminum version would really make much difference. Future plans for Jays water pump adapters with provisions for alternator.

Also a recommend diameter for an engine that will see 6500-7000rpm. Or overall recommended Alternator speed, I can change the alt pulley as well.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / New carb help
« on: December 21, 2016, 10:38:47 AM »
Vehicle, 77 F-350 dually, 4.10 rear np435 trans, 400 .03 over unknown cam assuming small rv type, fresh double roller timing set. Duraspark dizzy and ign box with Accel super coil 10* initial. Pulls steady 17" vac @ idle.

I drive this truck a lot. Last year replaced one head with a good used one due to burned valves and added Edelbrock performer 400 threw BG 625 Jr. on at the time. Had this carb for ever never have liked it, ran that for a year with moderate success.

Last month I bought a factory Holley reman 600 VS with electric choke. stock 6.5 PV. Over all better but I have been struggling with a stumble at part throttle. If I step into it super slow no problem, super fast not bad but under normal acceleration and shifting it will fall all over itself. And even if I just hold it at that throttle position, stop just before or just after its much better. Eventually it will catch itself and go. I have played with the pump shot without much change, tried different base timing with and without vac advance hooked up.

Idles great cruising at 55 is great WOT is great. Just a horrible dead area at 1/4 throttle Seems super lean. This is a mild low compression engine but it does run very strong.

Looking for ideas, maybe a power valve change?  I didn't want to buy an Edelbrock but maybe for an everyday I should have...

FE Technical Forum / Thoughts, Advice on block porosity
« on: February 10, 2016, 11:54:06 AM »
Pulled a block out last night to look over and do a few oil mods to in anticipation of a future low buck grenade motor. I believe this to be a late model 360 that has never been gone through. Stock bore nothing out of the ordinary so far with the exception of the attached pictures... First FE block Ive had like this, there was also an area along on the pan rail about an 1.5" with several porosity holes. I forgot to snap a pic of that area but it is much worse but in an area that shouldn't effect anything.

Has me a little concerned since I'm shooting for 400hp on this build with some questionable parts, or maybe this is the perfect block for such a build? If I was building something for a driver I wouldn't worry about it.

What are your thoughts??

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Brakes, to boost or not to boost
« on: January 05, 2016, 10:40:16 AM »
Hello all,

Building a street rod rat rod whatever you wana call it.. Need opinions on power brakes, are they needed?? 1950 Ford F1, Front is converted to disc, rear will remain stock for now with new wheel cylinders of course.

Will I have good pedal with a manual type master or should I do the extra work time and money for the booster? A manual would be very easy to fab in, this will be mounted under the floor either direction I go and I'm worried about clearance with a booster.

I may occasionally tow a 20ft boat.

What are you experiences with manual brakes? Last truck I had a 74 4x4 had manual drums, I didn't think it was to bad.

Vacuum should not be an issue if I do go the booster route. This is FE powered just in case you were worried!
