Non-FE Discussion Forum / Edelbrock carb shop
« on: October 22, 2019, 10:34:54 AM »
Looking for the "Drew" of Edelbrock carbs. Customers car with a Edelbrock that has seen better days and people fooling with it so I believe it has issues beyond what a good cleaning would take care of. Prefer a place that can rough tune it to the application.

FE Technical Forum / Retorque heads
« on: September 30, 2019, 11:21:32 AM »
This is relation to an old engine not a fresh rebuild. I have, be it a waste of time or maybe even the wrong thing to do re-torqued heads on old engines. Method I use, take bolt out clean threads blow out with air and maybe even run a tap down the hole if nasty, light coat of oil on threads and pull to spec in one swing. Do this on each bolt in order. Intake removed.

I had to pull a head bolt for some reason I cant remember and reinstall, when I did I noted the position of the head and it ended up about 15* or so past where it was (tighter). So I did them all, this was on a junkyard 390 that has been nothing but abused since. I also did this recently on a Cleveland  and got maybe 5* this engine had a "recent" rebuild.

Anyone else ever do this? Should I quit doing it? I can't see what it would hurt, obviously the gaskets have relaxed a little over the years and I feel this is bringing the clamp load back where it should be.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts where on the matter.

What is the recommended intake gasket, I would assume go without the valley pan never much cared for them. I also want to block the exhaust crossover. Iron intake and open chamber 2v heads. Looking at the Fel-Pro 1040 gasket but am leery of the Printoseal construction seeing so many failures on FE's.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 289
« on: August 28, 2019, 01:29:11 PM »
A buddy has a 63 or 64 (i think) Fairlane Sports Coupe with a 289, factory 4 speed. He has had the car since he was 16 and is a good mechanic. Engine was built decades ago but he cannot remember the details but it runs hard and sounds great. Headers and good exhaust and certainly some bump on the cam, best idle tune only achieves 11" of vacuum.

New Quick fuel 600 or 650 vac secondary carb (I can't remember), duraspark ignition. Has been sitting quite a bit over last 10 yrs maybe out once a yr for a couple hours, until this summer since my turbo 390 is running we have hit a few car shows together.

The problem is it's breaking up at higher rpm and seems down on power compared to what he remembers with a 600 double pumper from years ago. He has jetted the carb up a few numbers which helped he thinks it needs more, initial timing has been bumped up which also helped unsure of total at this time, vac secondary adjusted to come in sooner also helped. Fuel pressure is good throughout rpm range. Thoughts? still to lean, over advanced, other ignition problem?

I'm looking for more ideas as I about have him talked into letting me pull the distributor to give it a seat of the pants recurve and control the total. Also what would a good total be for  But I don't know if it will solve breaking up at high rpm. My gut tells me it ignition related somehow. We do not suspect any mechanical issue with the engine it has to be in the tune, but we have been wrong before.

Private Classifieds / Streetmaster Worth

So I have been driving my F100 quite a bit lately, One that had been siting for about 15yrs. Service manager at the tractor dealership was admiring it and asking me about it, what motor, trans etc. we talked for a few minutes and he said Ive got an aluminum intake for a 390 somewhere Ill shoot you a pic of it later. I was figuring it would be an Edelbrock performer of which I have no use but it was a Steetmaster.

From what can be seen on the pictures looks to be in ok shape it is filthy dirty and lots of paint over spray. Whats a fair price to offer? Last one I bought few years ago was in excellent shape and I think I gave $125. I don't particularly need this intake but it would be hard to pass up.

FE Technical Forum / timing light recomendation
« on: August 07, 2019, 09:42:47 AM »
In the market for a new timing light. Any recommendations?

About a year ago I borrowed 2 lights from a couple buddies that they considered their best light to compare against my old chrome non dial back light. Both where older dial backs. The issue was that I had a different reading from all 3. Great so which one is correct and which is wrong, who knows... Any easy way to verify accuracy besides comparison testing?

edit.. One that will work with stock and aftermarket ignition boxes i.e. Mallory, MSD, etc. Or best to have a separate light for each?

FE Technical Forum / Oil thermostat
« on: July 10, 2019, 02:41:23 PM »
Installing an oil cooler, how many of you are using a thermostat?

I like the idea of it. Faster warm up and helping ensure the oil gets to temp to get rid of moisture. Looking at the ones that are built into the sandwich adapter for ease of plumbing. I don't think getting up to a high enough temp is really a concern tho, no winter driving and i would doubt the cooler would be capable of over cooling (Derale 25 Row).

FE Technical Forum / Oil cooler
« on: June 06, 2019, 11:09:59 AM »
Thinking about adding an oil cooler, a simple 9x11 plate stacked cooler in front of the radiator.

I never liked the look of those sandwich adapters although I'm sure they work fine. In my pile of stuff I have a spacer from an FT that would have been used for an air compressor oil supply/return I believe that will work well and look better IMO. Fits between block and factory filter adapter.

Question is am I wasting my time and creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist? Any experience before and after adding a cooler?

With this twin turbo setup certainly loads of heat is being dumped into the oil although I do not have a gauge to confirm temps. the thought is the addition of a cooler would help curb some of that extra heat. Maybe not enough but these are parts on hand and certainly better than nothing.

FE Technical Forum / Vac advance and boost
« on: June 03, 2019, 03:38:59 PM »
As that title says, what do I need to know

This setup (propane) has no option for port vacuum (most others do) so I am forced to make it work with intake vacuum I'll just have to set it low and set "base" as real base + vac advance then limit total as needed.

As a test I installed a vacuum check valve, the problem is when in a low vac or boost situation it doesn't react fast enough, it just sits there until vacuum slowly bleeds off. So that obviously that won't work.

Retard under boost is controlled via ignition box with map sensor. Now this would greatly simplified with the new programmable msd box where adv/retard maps can be tailored based from map readings. Unfortunately I do not have that function on my Mallory, retard only.

How about this? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/trg-vbp-vac/overview/ Or maybe someone knows of a better option.

FE Technical Forum / No oil from a few rockers.
« on: May 21, 2019, 11:04:50 AM »
Used pos junkyard engine. Factory non-adjustable rockers in what appears to be decent shape. 0.70 restrictors, used oil pump that I pulled apart and tightened some clearances.

Doing a pre oil big 1/2 arm breaker drill. 10W40 oil 40 psi on the gauge, PLENTY of oil from the rockers/shafts except for a couple #2 exhaust and another on # 3. I rolled the engine over while priming as well thinking maybe it might help. Shafts are in the correct orientation, no galling, holes look open and clear rockers look the same.

Why? Oil is obviously going along the entire shaft holes are open and wet with oil on the shaft but not flowing from the rockers like the others.

I know the answer is pull everything apart or replace with new but there is no reason even worn parts shouldn't be flowing oil. Excessive clearance on the other rockers and oil is taking path of least resistance is only thing I can think of. But I've seen rockers and shafts in much worse shape that worked fine.

Ill probably throw another set on and see what happens.

FE Technical Forum / Backwards headgasket
« on: April 23, 2019, 02:55:53 PM »
Discovered a backwards head gasket on drivers side (not done by me!) as indicated buy the missing corner of the gasket on the front.

What actual effects does this have? Its obviously been this way for quite some time. No overheating.

Anybody every find this when dealing with an unknown engine?

FE Technical Forum / sparkplug ?
« on: March 29, 2019, 11:40:23 AM »
390, propane, boost, street driven.

Currently using an Autolite 124 plug, which seems to be working ok. But I want to use an extended or projected tip style. I'm finding the AP7FS and A6FS Can anybody make a recommendation besides these?

Also do I need a resister style plug? Only electronics are the ignition box, fans and lights. Or does it really matter for my application.

I do prefer Autolite or NGK brands.

Mallory box and coil MSD wires.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Shop rental
« on: March 04, 2019, 03:18:11 PM »
Looking for advise from the masses.

I have the option to buy the building my family ran their business from. I do not intend to continue with their business model. The building is quite large @ 10000 square ft and well setup with 9 bay doors all 14' high by 12' or 14'. low voltage 3 phase power through out, excellent concrete floor with full length drain and wash pit in one bay, and fully plumbed for air supply. With an additional 5000 ft for office and showroom area. Was originally a car dealership built in early 70's.

My dilemma, I have a good day job I would assume keep taking in the cost of insurance these days. This shop is where I have all my stuff tools, hot rods etc. So I would need to build a shop if I don't buy this one. I use about 1400 square ft. I also do side work here for hire mostly pick and choose my jobs with quite a bit of heavy truck repair for side money.

To justify buying I would need to rent or lease the rest out, I have no idea what to charge for space. This is a very rural area in a very poor county. Can anyone give any real world expertise as what is real price. Not looking to get rich but I don't want to cut my own throat.

One example is the local school is looking for a place to wash buses in the winter months, I have the perfect bay to do it over the wash pit including Hotsy pressure washer. They would need about 1400ft 50x28. So I would supply everything besides the labor or any chemicals/soap. What would this be worth a month?

FE Technical Forum / Flywheel recomendation
« on: February 11, 2019, 11:14:27 AM »
Going to order an SFI approved flywheel in the next couple days. Not a race deal and will never see 6k but I beat on it and want the piece of mind. I would prefer American made. Looking at this one https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-6375-n427 open to any recommendations. Also would anyone know off the top of their head if this would use 1" bolts.
