FE Technical Forum / Ever use these VC gaskets?

20 bucks a piece.. Surely they must be the best thing ever, but I can't remember anyone mentioning them.

I have one on hand and it is incredibly stiff and hard more like a spacer instead of a gasket.

FE Technical Forum / Rocker ratio
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:33:49 AM »
Anyone ever mix 1.73 and 1.76 rockers to help crutch a camshaft? Say a single pattern that your stuck using.

I know not hardly enough difference in ratio to be worth it or even notice a difference.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Battery Chargers
« on: November 16, 2020, 02:05:36 PM »
In the market for a new roll around battery charger. Would rather pay a bit more and have USA made. Need something fairly robust, not just for cars and trucks but semis.

Always heard Associated where good but I don't understand there charge ratings, usually listed at 70 amp and boost. As if there is only 2 selections I usually like slow charge at say 10 amps if possible, isn't that what most battery manufactures recommend?

Any recommendations, didn't think this would be a hard choice but it is increasingly difficult to buy American these days.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Robinair 34788 problems
« on: September 30, 2020, 11:58:58 AM »
Any A/C machine guru's in here?

Just picked up a well used Robinair 34788 for pennies. Seller claimed it worked but honestly it was cheap enough even if I have to take it to an authorized Robinair repair center I'll still be ahead. Ive always wanted an ac machine and have really needed one lately.  Ive cleaned it up and it seems to be in better shape than originally thought.

But they are a bit of a mystery to me in how they work, or why they won't. One problem is it takes forever to clear the lines. To the point you will give up on it.

Scenario I want to recover a system to work on it. Set machine to recover, lines are clearing to start recover this might take 20min recover starts and is very slow like an hour. You can watch the recovered amount coming up then then eventually gauges will show vacuum making you think its got all the product out say 1 lb but then it just sits there still recovering, staring at the amount recovered number and it just sits there, no change. Walk away for another hour and it had completed the recover and clear for 2lbs.  Ok so it's working? But why so slow and why would it recover some stall and then continue.

Seems to charge fine until it try's to clear the hoses at the end. I don't know if I fully trust the scales but it went though a calibration with the certified weight with no problems. Also for some reason the internal tank sits at an angle on the scales which I found odd but can't see any obvious issue. Vacuum pump seems to work fine. Air purge is working.

I have the operators and parts manual but a service manual is non existent. They do a pretty good job of forcing you back to a dealer or buying a new one. Thought I would ask here before hauling it 2hrs one way for a checkup.

FE Technical Forum / 6R80

Awhile back there was talk about adapting the FE to the 6r80 that raised questions. I recently found a you tube vid of someone utilizing one. Gives a few quick views of how it fits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeWZg9YfXb4

Sweet ass build too.

FE Technical Forum / windage tray
« on: August 11, 2020, 11:58:06 AM »
Is a windage tray worth the effort/cost on basic street engine that would only see 5000rpm once in a blue moon? 390 2wd truck pan.

Or should one be used on basically everything with maybe the exception of a deeper 4x4 or FT bread pan.

Member Projects / 74 f100 stall
« on: July 31, 2020, 01:21:22 PM »
So I need to pull the engine on my 74 f100 due to a twisted oil pump shaft. Thinking about a convertor change while in there. Any one have an opinion on these https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hup-35-20

Shop truck use. Running for parts, hauling stuff around, running errands. Maybe its not worth it idk.

FE Technical Forum / VC baffle
« on: June 04, 2020, 10:40:54 AM »
I have a fairly nice set of M/T valve covers that need a baffles added. Who ever cut the hole for the twist in breather for some reason is backwards, have to turn it to the right to loosen. It was done by hand with a butter knife I think, but it does work.  Other cover has just a round hole for a pcv. Running just breathers on both. Any recommendation for an add in baffle, all the ones I see are for chevys.

This is never a good thing in my opinion. Leads to lack of competition in the market place therefor lack of innovation.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Rear gear ratio
« on: January 17, 2020, 12:08:56 PM »
I need to start planning a complete rear end swap for the future. 1950 F1 twin turbo 390 manual trans with OD splitter. Current rear is Dana 41 or 44  w/4.27 ratio has somehow held in this long but it only a matter of time and I would rather replace it before failure. I try not to be to rough on it at slow speeds in fear of snapping an axle. Runs 2050rpm @ 55.

Mainly street driven with most 2 lane roads having a 55 or 60 mph limit, which I try to stay close to.. I do plan on visiting the track at some point but not much. I would also like to take it down the interstate without being run over, 70mph limit here. But again not much.

Axle will either be an 8.8 out of a late model explorer or a 9".

Curious what anyone might think.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Toploader newb
« on: January 10, 2020, 05:08:13 PM »
I want to swap out the poor shifting NP435 for a toploader. Which currently has an Advance Adapters overdrive in front which will retained and require the 1-1/16" input shaft.

I'm concerned about shifter location, the overdrive sets everything back about 7.5". Not an issue with the np435 but at looking at most toploaders the shifter is way far back and offset to the left. Any advise for something that would put the shifter as far forward as possible?

This is a down the road project, just planning on what will be needed to start collecting parts. While subject to location and condition what should a person expect to pay for a used unit? Also interested in pro shifting 2-3 3-4

Non-FE Discussion Forum / F100 tire size
« on: November 05, 2019, 12:29:31 PM »
While it is FE powered figured this was a better spot for this question.

What is the factory tire height for a 1974 F100. 390,C6 and I believe 3.73 gear. Just picked up a set of old turbine wheels 15x8.5 want to keep factory diameter for the speedometer. Cannot find a reliable source searching the webs, thought maybe someone here might know.
