FE Technical Forum / ARP lube, anti seize, loctite
« on: January 12, 2024, 04:27:58 PM »
So we all often times replace 50 year old hardware with new ARP hardware when building/assembling these engines with new parts and pieces.  I tend to always follow ARP's instalation and torque recommendations however they are often contradictory to the recommendations of said parts such as (but not limited to) dampers, timing sets, etc wich mostly always say to use loctite.   ARP spec always wants there lube used..

How about bolts going into aluminum (block) threads such as cam retainer plate, oil pump, or just general hardware for timing covers and such?

When I got Mine I didn't get the cheap $80 set. The ones I got were e bay specials and listed as 'tall' .they were like $140 about 5 or 6 years ago. I have had them on and off many times with no issues and they fit over my monstrosity of a rocker arm assembly just fine. Maybe I got lucky for once.

I have had one of those off shore sets on my 445 race motor for about 5 years. Zero problems with them once I opened up the bolt holes from 1/4" to 5/16". Moroso makes a really nice set for about 500 bucks. Billet fab will make you a nice set for about that same price.

Yes indeed, good stuff. Been using them for quite a while. Got a new setup on the bench now for the new build. Good company to work with to. In the past they would do extra keyway  grooves and custom bores at a reasonable upcharge in a timely manner.

SNB-130
Works well with room temp water and works really well with moderately warm/hot water.

So yesterday early evening after I picked up my mom and dropped her off at church, (shes 86 and doesn't drive after dark) I stopped at a friends house and just for shits and giggles I sized up my Crower rod against 2 different rods he had there. A Compstar H beam which had even more "meat" in the affected interference area than my Crower, and then sized my Crower up against a Howard's UD I beam rod and they were dam near identical.  I knew then that I had a date with the belt sander. Hung out and chatted a bit til time to pick my mom up and take her back home. Got back to the shop and figured I had a couple hours so I changed out my belt and got busy making some "adjustments" to a couple of the rods. By midnight I had #3 and #7 like I wanted them and ready to go back in the block for a test fit. I'm right at     .070" clearance,  give or take a thou or 2 and I think I'm gonna live with that. I have had to do a few aluminum rodded 4.250 armed combos and always shot for .100" rod to cam lobe clearance in those cases and it always worked out. Hopefully being a good quality steel rod I can live with the    .030 less clearance. I'm gonna try and get #4 and #8 taken care of Wednesday night, tonight (Monday) is house cleaning night and Tuesday and Thursday evenings I work on my buddies 65 Ranchero pro street build.
So anyway, progress being made, just a hiccup is all. And yes, I said belt sander, I learned a long time ago when doing rods I have way better control and do a way better job useing the outside radius edge of a belt sander than a carbide bur/cartridge roll and die grinder. Just the way I do it.
Thank everyone for you guys input.  I always appreciate it.

All those so called bad ass 327's and 350's that always picked a fight with me back in the day always said my 69 4 speed 390 mustang was a big block and that was OK by me.  Also I'm pretty sure even the smallest  fe always had the big block suspension setup. Call It what you want, no reason to haggle. It's our beloved FE..

« on: November 20, 2023, 10:29:22 PM »
Thanks for the info Jay. Unfortunately I have already put a good bit of work into the adapter I have, matching the intake side and cylinder head side up nicely so I'm probably gonna go with what I got. I'll get it mocked up this weekend and see what I have. Both trend and manton offer neck down (7/16×1/2) push rods so that could be an option.
Nothing to it but to do it. Thanks for the input guys.
