Member Projects / 504 aluminium FE build. The beginning
« on: November 29, 2022, 10:44:36 PM »
For a year and a half i had been trying to find a good reputable, trustworthy, competent machine shop to do the machine work on my pond blocked FE power headed all aluminum 504cid FE. My long time machinist passed away, i had another guy that did work for me back in the early 90's that use to build alot of stock and super stock FE's in the early 80's  so i reached out to him. He said sure, he would be glad to do it, BUT, hes semi retired, works alone, 74 years old and said he has 6 roundy round guys he builds engines for so he would have to do it in his spare time so maybe 6 months or so.. oh well, scratch that idea.
So i started checking out some performance machine and speed shops around my area. Virginia speed, horsepower solutions, Wargo machine and race engines, Bunner engine development, abacus machine and quite a few others. It wasnt a pleasant experience. Some shops claimed they could do parts of the job but would have to farm out the rest.. Others didn't wanna touch it cause they had no clue what it was. Had one shop tell me they could "try" and balance the crank. WTF.. One shop had 2 whole walls of modern machine equipment but not a dam soul that could use any of it, all they could do was lap top tuning on the chassis dyno even though they advertise as a race engine builder. Another machinist/engine builder refused to just do the machine work, said he would have to build the engine as well.. That ain't happening lol.   Finely i started getting somewhere with one of the shops, all state of the art equipment, bang up looking web site, guy on the phone seemed to know what he was talking about. Told me to bring my stuff in on a particular friday so i took off work, loaded all my stuff up, made the hour drive and when i get there the guy is friendly and all but kinda confused as to what hes looking at and suppose to be doing. He goes to get a cart and comes back with the owner/head machinist and this guy is a real piece of work, flat out jerk. I could tell he probably never even seen an FE before. Hes looking it over all quiet like then the asshole looks at me and tells me, "we don't work on junk like that, you just need to get rid of that junk and let me build you an LS.. I wanted to swing on him so fricking bad but i didn't, just shut the tail gate, told them to have a nice day and walked around to get in my truck. He tried to stop me, said they could take care of it, i told him no thank you, go back to your LS shit and i split.
As some of you know i frequent the PDRA events, got a few friends that run top sportsman and pro Nitrous and most live down in Carolina and a few of them had kept mentioning TKM performance to me, told me that's where i needed to take my "junk" . 4 and a half hours away from me down in Denton Nc but at this point i figured it was at least worth a call. I called them up and got a message straight away to leave my name and number and someone would get back to me. I did but honestly i was thinking "oh great, here we go again" . About an hour later though my phone rang, i got to talk to Jon boy and he took all the time i needed, talked a good 25 min or so and within an hour i had a work order e mailed to me with a full breakdown and pricing. I was impressed by the professionalism right off the bat. I took the 4 and a half hour drive down and before we ever unloaded my stuff Jon boy took me on a tour of the shop. It was awesome, cleanest, neatest shop i ever been in bar none. Everything was set up as stations and everyone had there own particular task. Everyone was super friendly and genuinely interested in what they would be doing. All top notch equipment, it was pretty awesome i must admit. So i dropped all my stuff off, got my paper work and got sent a link to this thing they have called "my shop assistant". Was told i could follow the progress of all the work with details and pictures of everything that got done so id know every day if it got worked on and what was done. Jon boy told me they would be done in about 2 weeks, im thinking to myself "yeah right" cause there had to be 30 engine blocks setting in the new work section plus i was getting a crankshaft balanced as well. I woulda been happy with a month or even more lol.
so i followed along on the "my shop assistant" got picts of the work being done and knew what was being done each day and sure enough after 8 working days everything was done and ready for pickup.

work completed by TKM performance.

Seat existing sleeves.
CNC Profile Deck. (square)
CNC Target Deck. 10.150

Non-FE Discussion Forum / PAC valve springs and components
« on: November 27, 2022, 08:35:49 PM »
Was a bit suprised to see that all the PAC stuff list China as country of origin.  Definitely not a hater but think it's kinda funny how a few really big time professional race engine builder's rant till there red faced about off shore and over seas stuff and how they would never use it yet the majority of there engines use PAC components.
Again, I'm no hater, good stuff is good stuff.  I had just assumed PAC was a US product, back several years ago with the red white and blue boxing and all..

Non-FE Discussion Forum / North v South PDRA. (Kurt Neighbor)
« on: June 25, 2022, 12:45:29 AM »
Had a great time at the North versus South PDRA race at Buds creek today. Good weather, 3 rounds of qualifying and a night of fire. Was glad to see Elijah Morton got the #1 qualifying spot in exstreem pro stock with a 4.06  . Got to talk to Kurt Neighbor some and chatted about how hes liking running in exstreem pro stock.  He acquired Elijah's old pro stock car as a roller and got it together and has been running the series this year. Hes in the show although he only made one pass today. Having some troubles with his grid not picking up the 02 sensors so hes chasing down those issues but otherwise the ol car and Kaase power are doing pretty well. He was excited  he had been a few rounds so far this year and feels like over time he will get the mountain motor prostock figured out. Hopefully he can go a round or 2 tomorrow..

Pond aluminum block, solid roller race only.

Can a pond aluminum block safely be bored to accept a .903 ultra pro morel bushed lifter ?

Does morel make a .875 ultra pro bushed lifter ?

In eather case should the lifter bore in the aluminum block be bushed regardless ?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Awesome racing so far
« on: April 28, 2022, 07:36:06 PM »
Ok, so I know this isn't most of you guys flavor and I know how many of you feel about 1/8th mile drag racing but I gotta say it's been an awesome start to the PDRA season so far and what's even better is quite a few of these guys are showing up at smaller grass roots type 1/8th mile tracks for testing and grudge runs. I have already been to kinston Nc, Hertford Nc, and colonial beach Va this year while some of these guys test and grudge and do quick 8 racing on these sketchy little tracks. I'm talking 3.50's  pro boost cars, 3.60's pro nitrous cars, top sportsman cars that regularly run in the 3.70-3.80 range , and my fave, the mountain motor exstreem pro stock guys running 4.0's on all motor.  All blasting down these narrow little worn out 1/8th mile tracks and putting on one hell of a show. Colonial beach (custom T's motorsports park) is off the chain when the fast guys show up.

FE Technical Forum / FE Power rocker assembly,, ect
« on: March 15, 2022, 07:11:08 PM »
Jay,
I have some questions and initially I was going to e mail you but thought some others here may be intrested in your responses.  I suck at small talk so I'll get right to it.
1. What did the rocker arm ratio end up being ?
2. Will it be possible to get replacements,  either individually or perhaps half sets and shafts ? Spares if you will, just in case. Nothing I hate more than being 200 miles from home and not have a spare part that should be in the parts box. I do realize you first need to supply everyone with sets that have purchased the heads but I'm in line for a exstra half set when available.
3. Has anyone done any porting on the heads yet and made any significant gains ? I know the heads are amazing out of the box but I'm all in on this project and would be interested in getting the works done to the heads, from porting to valve job and assembly.
4. Could you provide me with the valve specks ? I'm looking at going ahead and getting a set of titanium valves done for the heads.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Anyone dealt with Jerico lately? I'm getting no response back. Granted I only made a couple calls and sent 2 e mails. Have always gotten reasonably quick responses back in the past.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Body kits
« on: January 05, 2022, 06:56:56 PM »
Any leads on any sources for trans am style,  wide body, or ground effect's body kits for 69, 70 mustang's? Not looking for high dollar shelby type reproduction stuff. Just basic fiberglass kits, even made in China would be ok because its gonna get re worked, cut and hacked on quite a bit. Just looking for something to start with.
