The specific piston measures the same as the other 7?
Skirt coating could certainly be used to fix an issue. Calico is a very reputable company.

Speaking of using old dampers.
I was sitting not far away in 1985 (I recall) an 1/8 mile drag race set up in the industrial section of a small southern Alberta city.
SBC powered rail, at the start line, brother had his hand on the engine to check temperature. His brother in the car revs the engine. The guy with his hand on the engine dropped like a rock. Dead as a door nail. Unbelievable! The damper came apart and ended up in this poor guys chest..... Was not a pretty sight.
Don't reuse old dampers - please.

Lack of oil can also lead to valve tip failure.
The oiling helps lubricate as well as cool the interface between the valve tip and roller.
Lack of oil would certainly heat up the area to the point of annealing the valve tip.

I would verify that you are getting enough oiling to the rocker arm roller and valve tip.
I am now leaning to this reasoning.

I know that some go to great lengths to reduce oiling to the rocker arms in FE's.
Verify oiling to rocker roller and valve tip.

I agree that at 600 lbs open, one shouldn't need lash caps on a stainless valve.
However, the hardening is not all that deep on any stainless valve - unless it has stellite tips friction welded to the top (in the old days)
I have seen some machine shops grinding off far too much on valve tips. The heat treatment will not allow much to be taken off.
Lash cap to me is extra safety - if the geometry is adjusted. Not always needed - but better than battered valve tips.

Valves without enough hardening depth.
Sometimes caused when valve tips are ground reducing hardened depth.
I have had 1 valve out of 8 show similar grooving after <500 miles (800lbs open) These were Ferrea Competition Plus valves.
Replaced the one valve and then went to lash caps.

Brent has run several SFT cams in FE's.
Careful selection of cam and lifters as well as break in spring pressures checked.
Less than 300lbs open and ~ 100 lbs closed is a good start for SFT break-in.

The Trick Flow used to be cast at the Edelbrock Foundry. You can see the EF round logo on the TF castings.
Perhaps Edelbrock/CPG (CPG - Comp Performance Group) does no longer want to cast cylinder heads for competition? Or raised the cost making TF look somewhere else for casting.
Perhaps someone knows?

I believe the L19 bolts do not like moisture - I have read hydrogen embrittlement is the issue.

Agree 100% with dozz302.
Spacing the rocker shaft up will change geometry.
From your picture - a little massaging of the rocker arm body (where it contacts) is not a big issue at all.
Make enough clearance and then smooth out - done.

Make sure the sweep across the valve tip is minimized. Many times the minimum pattern is not centered.
Brent has videos I believe of rocker arm geometry set up.
With a shaft system one raises or lowers the shaft to adjust geometry.

Smith Brothers push rod order page:

Can specify measuring from Ball to bottom of cup - or overall length.

You are most welcome!

I have always just made my own by cutting a factory push rod. Shorten the push rod perhaps 3/4" and threading the inner diameter
with a 1/4-20 thread tap.
A 2" piece of threaded rod (1/4-20) and a couple of 1/4-20 nuts - now you have your own push rod length checker.
I hate spending money on something so absolutely simple to make.

Example of a longer version for shell solid lifter application:

FE Technical Forum / Re: Electric versus Flex Fan

I will add a quick note regarding street driven FE's.
Many FE builds do away with vacuum advance.
The use of vacuum advance very much helps the engine run cooler at low speeds idling in traffic.
Use the manifold vacuum vs. ported vacuum source - as one does want vacuum at idle to add ignition advance.
In my Galaxie I have never had an overheating issue.
I used the same factory radiator that came with the car (390 2V) - even with the 750+ HP 503" 385 series engine (278/290 @0.050" 0.790" lift solid roller 12.5:1 CR, 5000 stall 8" converter)
I did change to a flex fan, engine never went above 180 degrees. Street driven.

FE Technical Forum / Re: engine balance
« on: January 09, 2024, 12:16:05 PM »
As you have a piston from the previously balanced engine - it is easy to measure any difference in weight.
You should have a previous engine balance card (bobweight card) and can go from there. Easy peasy.
