exhaust manifold leak will make it backfire. get a rebuild kit for the carb.

Yes Richard, I feel your pain. The way I get over sellers remorse is to put that money away and spend it on another project, parts or something you wanted for a long time such as another hobby, travel and such. The worst thing to do is spend it on everyday bills. Then you don't have your car anymore or the money.

A few weeks ago while camping, the two women next to us had a new RE with the side car. Funny thing is,it looked and sounded just like yours.

I wonder what your future plans for the car are. Sell it in 5 years, 10 years, never, pass it down? How original is the rest of the car? If the car is untouched (original paint, interior and such) and you owned it forever, myself, I would not touch it with future plans of selling it. If you were to keep it forever and pass it down when you move on, I'd rebuild it, drive it and enjoy the crap out of it. Rebuilding it will also give the next owner piece of mind.

1969-71 Boss Mustangs all had solid cams too! 302, 351 and 429

69 BOSS 302 had solids. 70 had hydraulic.
70 boss 302s were solid also.

FWIW. I have a 63 352 that sat un-turned for 41 years. It was seized. Squirted Kroil in all cyl. and eventually it came free. I then juiced the cyl, with atf and turned it over by hand and then with the starter, that's it. It took a tune-up, rebuilt carb and a new fuel pump. It's been running perfect for two years.  I did change oil in it and added a can of Rislone before starting it, ran it a 100 miles and changed it again. I say fire it up and then see how it does.

I suspect Ford wanted them to be user friendly. Most cars were daily drivers. Very few families had two cars. They had to start easy in all climates. If your wife needed to take the kids to school in 10* weather, she needed the car to start and run smooth with no fuss, and keeping warranty issues at bay.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor Gear Roll Pin Broke
« on: May 26, 2022, 02:19:27 PM »
If all three pieces of the pin were still on the gear, I don't know if I'd worry about debris. If something gets in the pump, it will lock it up and I have never been able to back it out, always had to disassemble the pump to get it out. Since you can spin the pump its obviously clear. If you are missing apiece of the pin then you have to go on safari.
