FE Technical Forum / light switch
« on: November 30, 2019, 03:43:53 PM »
On my '63 gal project that had been setting for 40 years, the headlight switch is frozen. I can rotate it and turn on the dome light, but it won't pull out. I have a new one but in order to change it you have to pull it all the way out and push the button to release the knob. To make matters worse, the fuse holder is attached to the bottom of it. I Kroiled it, beat it with a hammer. Any Ideas other than drive it in the day light.

Only this one's mine. Local car, knew it from new, one owner. Tried to buy it for 40 years but the owner said no. Run into him a few weeks ago and he said maybe. Made him an offer he couldn't refuse and he said sold. Four door hardtop XL, 352 and always garage kept. Parked it in '79 because of the gas crunch and never ran it again. Time has been tough on the old gal, but maybe she can be saved. Motor is seized, mice crap and mold everywhere but the interior is mint including the padded dash. The bright work and rubber is mint. Some usual east coast rust, but nothing fatal. Seems he had a gauge and horn fetish, but what a cool car. Even the plug wires are original.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / milkshake
« on: October 23, 2018, 02:04:39 PM »
I have a Flex with the 3.5 that has the dreaded water pump failure. The pump is internal & driven off the timing chain & when it fails the coolant goes right down into the pan which results in a milkshake. Good news is that it was discovered early enough that there seems to be no other damage. Engine runs fine & quiet. So, other than real frequent oil changes, is there something else I can do to flush out the milkshake? Rislone, Motor Flush? My thinking is that running the engine with new oil, the remaining coolant will evaporate thru the PVC & burn off.

I normally would'nt give this a second look but, I knew this car from new. one owner, 70k, 390 4 speed, bench seat, 350 rear. body is decent having never been out in the winter. the 390 was pulled to freshen gaskets back in 99 & never was put back together. I have it all. so what do I do with it? ebay it as is, put it together, get her running & then sell it? or keep it & make a sleeper? no power steering or brakes. It has just the right amount of shitty that everybody loves right now. It does have two too many doors for my liking, but somehow that factory 4 speed cancels that out. I need another project like a hole in the head, but somehow the deal just happened.  I was just so helpless to say no. Give me your thoughts.

FE Technical Forum / trw piston question
« on: March 14, 2015, 02:36:56 PM »
20 - 30 years ago I bought a set of trw L2291A pistons at Carlisle. they were brand new in the box with the rings. I've see L2291F's but not A's.
anybody know what they are? were they troublesome? can I use them or should I just scrap-em? they are marked .030 over & I only paid $30 bucks.
the box had 390 forged scribbled on it. thanks for your input.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / hello
« on: January 11, 2015, 05:08:21 PM »
Thanks guys for taking me into the forum. I'm not big on forums, but stumbled upon this by accident. A little about me. I'm almost 60yo. & started out driving with my moms 60' 352 Gal. wagon. A cool car to have now but not back then. While working part time in 73, after school my boss said he had a junker he'd sell me for $100. so I went to see it & low & behold it was a 64 gal xl. 390 4 speed.  ran good but rusty. In 75 I came across another almost rust free 64 from va. bought it for $100 bucks & stuck it away. It was a 390 auto. car that had a 352 stuffed in it just to move it around. Some how through all the years I managed to hang onto it, but that's about all. It never saw the road since 74. Marriage, kids, houses, & time take a toll on your best laid plans. As soon as I tore the 64 down for a resto I decided to become self employed. That was 21 years ago, enabling me to work 60 hour weeks. I always wanted to build it up so I always was collecting parts. A few months ago I bought a complete ready to drop in rebuilt #'s matching 390 at an estate sale so I guess the 64 will stay stock. Which brings me to the 62. I have a used car friend that bought it at auction. He had an appraisal stating it was a 390 car & all that. When I pointed out that it was an X car 352  he offered it to me for 1/2 money. So it went into the barn with 64. A couple of years ago I decided it was gonna go down the road no matter how it looked & it looked bad (still does). After  new tires, brake, fuel & exhaust systems it once again lived. Future plans call for a 390 that I have all the parts for, & change it to a big spline top loader. I almost hate to take it apart because I love driving it. My original 64 I had in high school went to ford heaven by way of the crusher 25 years ago, but I still have that 390 & T10 plus the doors. Some where in a move the seats & console got lost but I do have the 4 speed console top plate & boot. Somehow the 62 looks just about how it would have if I had it back in 1974. Strange....... shady!

Sorry, somehow I posted this in the wrong spot. maybe the moderator could place it where it belongs.  What can I say, I've even bought a few chevys, proving I'm subject to stupidity ever now & then.

FE Technical Forum / seeking advice
« on: January 02, 2015, 02:58:59 PM »
I have a 62 Gal. with 352 & a slush-o-matic. I have every thing to convert it to a big input top loader & 389 gears. about 30 years ago I bought a box of goodies from a guy cleaning out a garage & in it was a Lakewood blow proof bell & an alum Harvey flywheel. The flywheel is 184 tooth which means I can use a modern starter Being the cheap bastard I am, I'd like to use it rather than buy a new steel one. My concern is I always thought alum. flywheels were for light weight cars. Any input would be a apr.  Thanks, shady
