FE Technical Forum / Re: big ,med, or small block

The reason a 390GT can't run with a 396/375 is obvious when you look at the flow comparisons.  The 390FE heads of the era only flowed in the 235-240cfm with the 406-427 heads flowing 250-260cfm.  The best FE MR heads only flowed ~280cfm in 1966/67.  Any 396 head would flow 290-310cfm and the hp heads flowed 320-330cfm.  A 396 aluminum intake manifold would flow 390-410cfm, where the C6/7-F/H intakes would only flow ~285-290cfm, with the sidewinder J averaging 305cfm.  I just within the last 3 months flowed 4 sets of 396 Stock Eliminator heads and 3 unported intake manifolds for a local racer who went to INDY this year.  His heads flowed 320-330cfm and the intakes flowed 409-420 cfm average.  The best SS FE heads I have had on my flow bench only flowed 305-320 cfm.  The 428CJ heads only flow 260ish cfm and they would keep up with the 396SS in pure stock trim.  The 427HR heads as cast flowed 285-290cfm, and the 8V intake manifold would flow 365cfm as cast and they were used in lightweight cars to make them competitive.  All these FE heads could be improved by 10-15% but that is still not on par with the BBC if we are honest about them.  Joe-JDC

And that was printed just before the new 429/460s came out.  As one who owned a '56 Fairlane with Y Block, then bought a new 1966 Mustang, I never heard a FE called a "Big Block" Ford. Every body bragged on their 352HP, 390/401, 406, 410, 428 or 427 by engine size.  It was not until the 429 came along in the Thunderbird/LTD/Torinos that the Big Block designation stuck.  Just saying.   Joe-JDC

Term "Small Block" didn't arrive at Ford until the 221-260-289 thin wall casting nomenclature.  The Ford Y Block has never been anything other than a Y Block in terms of engine family.  The Ford Y included the 239-256-272-292-312.  Most folks didn't start calling anything Ford Big Block until the 429-460 came on the scene. The SBF continued to include the 302-302B-351W-351C/Boss.  The difficulty came with the 351M/400 due to their deck height and most folks called them a medium block.  Most folks now just use SBF, FE, MEL, 335, 385, for different engine classes before the modular and all their different valve/camshaft variables. 2v-3v-4v to include the V-10.  Joe-JDC

Neat build.  That camshaft should idle like a stock CJ.  How did the intake manifold fit the block and heads?  Joe-JDC

My little 375 Y Block that I rebuilt after the 2018 EMC disaster where it placed 2nd in Vintage Class made 592hp with 950DP, added a HVH Dominator spacer and 1050 Dominator made 604hp, changed intake to Dominator Flanged intake and 1250 Dominator it made 613hp.  With tunnel ram and 2 860cfm Pro Systems carbs, it made 613.3hp.  The torque was up with the tunnel ram everywhere, but the Dominator matched it at 7200 rpm. The 1250 Dominator ran just fine on the 375Y, and made 21 more horsepower than the 950DP.   Joe-JDC

On the tunnel wedge, if you open it up to the MR gasket size it will promptly lose 20 lbft torque.  A slight clean up of the flashing but not opening up the port will net only a few hp.  BTDT and lost because the Ford TW flows 380-390 cfm as cast.  The TFS TW flows over 400 cfm as cast.  Joe-JDC

What intake manifold are you asking the question about?  Makes a bit of difference due to the dual plane vs single plane vs aftermarket.  Joe-JDC

This is the tie bar over the side posts.  It clears a F-150 Super Crew with hood open.  12' ceiling.  Joe-JDC

Do you have a tie bar across the top?  My lift has a top bar that keeps the lift from moving inward with weight.  Been using it for 22 years without any problems.  Joe-JDC

This kinda got off topic, but my other fast car story is my '70 Shelby GT-500 going to Bonneville.  My F-I-L was a WWII disabled Veteran who lost his left hand to a grenade from the enemy.  My inlaws flew out to Utah where I was stationed at the time, and he wanted to visit Bonneville to see the salt.  I took him in the Shelby, and as we were driving along, he casually asked how fast would this car go.  It has a 140 speedometer, and there were no posted speed limits back then, so I said, lets find out.  When you leave Salt Lake City, you drive towards Wendover NV and the last 46 miles are nearly as straight as an arrow.   I slowly stepped up the speed to 120, and the front end settled down and felt solid, so I pushed it on up until the speedometer was touching the 140, and my F-I-L held his arm with his right hand and leaned over and watched the needle, and then said, "That is fast enough".  I pushed it on a bit and it hit 153 mph, just to see if it would go faster.  When we got to Bonneville, he ran around the car on the salt and took a movie picture of the salt and laughed like a little kid.  It was one of the best memories I have of him.  He died a short time later from a massive heart attack.  Anyway, the Shelby had the AA camshaft, adjustable rocker arms, aluminum intake, headers, tweaked carb, re-curved distributor, and deep sump oil pan.  I have always wondered just how fast it could go with modern heads, camshaft, and different gears.  Those were the days when we were young, foolish, and not scared of anything.  Joe-JDC

I think you will find the front of the hood will start to lift upward at anything over 130mph, and the front end will float more than the rear above that speed.  My Cobra hood would bend up about 4" all the way back to the hood pins at 145mph, and would settle back down as the speed dropped below 125mph or so.  The first time it happened, I panicked because I thought the hood was ruined.  I added pins to my '66 mustang to keep the hood on, and also kept the pins on my Mach I race car.   Lots of guys run over 140-150ish with their drag cars, but those hoods are pinned or dzus locked on.   Joe-JDC

You can change the weights which have different shapes, change the springs to control the rate of advance, or bend the tabs to increase the spring tension, also.  Lots of ways to limit the rate or total amount of advance for street.  Joe-JDC

Grind all the broken edges out smooth, and pressure test the block.  If it pressure tests Ok, then it should be salvageable.  Joe-JDC
