FE Technical Forum / Re: Why aren't more people building SOHCs?
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:28:02 PM »
In the latest Hot Rod magazine, John Kaase has an ad for a complete Boss Nine engine kit for the do-it-yourself engine builder that includes his semi-hemi cylinder heads, accompanying pistons, pins and rings, as well as pushrods, shaft-mounted rockers, and induction system.  Everything to complete the full assembly is supplied--except the block, crank, and rods.  Even Boss valve covers for $9100.  I have a completed 460 Super Cobra Jet engine(alum. heads) I built for a customer that dynoes at 651/590 and I built it complete from Canton oil pan to Dominator/Victor with solid lifter camshaft for less than $8500.  I purchased a Motorsports 460 short block with 11.5 cr for this build.  A set of Hooker Super Comp headers, and it was complete for less than $9200.00  You cannot begin to build a 650 hp FE for that amount in todays market.  Joe-JDC

To be brutally honest, If I were going to build an engine that physical size, it would be a Boss 600 CI with Kaase heads and intake.  It is cheaper, would make more horsepower, much more reliable, and has many more parts readily available in the aftermarket.  I like the FE about as well as anyone, and I have 4 complete FEs, but there ARE other engines that make horsepower easier and cheaper and are easier to work with.  JMO, but I am FORD through and through---Y block, anyone???  LOL  Joe-JDC

FE Technical Forum / Re: Cometic MLS head gaskets?
« on: September 15, 2014, 11:04:57 AM »
I am trying to visualize exactly what it is you are saying.  If the pitting is not covered by the new gasket around the holes, then it is not a problem.  It does not need silicone on it.  If the pitting is under the gasket material, then the block should be decked smooth and square decked prior to the assembly.  If the pitting is so bad that decking the block will not remove it, then I would also consider whether the cylinder walls are still thick enough for a rebuild.  Look at the overall block condition, and determine if you want this to be a longterm rebuild, or a stop-gap build.  JMO, but I still contend that anything worth doing is worth doing right every time.  Joe-JDC.

You don't want to put a bead that will squish out and enter the water system and clog any tubes in your radiator, or heater core.  If that pitting is bad, then fix the problem now.   JMO, but anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time.  Joe-JDC

The Road to Drag Week 2014 / Re: 577 SOHC Post Mortem

I agree with material failure as the most likely culprit with the mid beam break.  I also wonder if there is an issue with the offset cylinders causing stress on the rods and sideloading them unevenly.  I would not consider re-using any of those rods until they were thoroughly sonic tested or x-rayed for metal fatigue.  I also agree that piston speed is not a problem for short bursts of time at your rpm/stroke.  Sorry for the carnage, it would/will be interesting to know how quick you can go with a healthy engine.  Joe-JDC

FE Technical Forum / Re: Now it's a torque converter question
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:17:29 PM »
Actual torque also affects the rpm at stall.  Most folks overestimate their torque and the rpm where it is most beneficial for launch.  The same converter will stall higher with more torque in another engine with more torque.  I have a JPT C-4 with C-6 adapter and use a converter that stalls at 4500 with a 351W, but would stall at 5400 with 427 MR in my 69 Mach I.  The same converter.  Joe-JDC.
