FE Technical Forum / Re: Head gasket question.
« on: March 08, 2022, 11:58:00 AM »
I wouldn't think that the .025 difference in diameter would affect anything.  If you are planning on keeping the engine forever then go with the larger.  Cometic claims that they are reuseable so they would work with a future clean up boring.  They also have a head gasket kit that has intake gaskets etc.  Really not much more than the head gaskets themselves plus the other gaskets needed.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Installing tranny, won't go in all the way
« on: February 22, 2022, 11:44:32 AM »
Had this happen years ago myself.  Went to the hardware store and bought (4) 7/16-14 bolts about 4" long.  Screwed them in the bell holes with about 1" of threads exposed.  This ensures that the tranny is close to where it needs to go to slip in.  It will also show how much gap there is between the tranny and bell on all four corners and is holding the weight.  Grab the tailshaft and wiggle while pushing forward and it should slip right on in.  Another time I got frustrated and called it a day.  Next morning crawled under the car, grabbed the tailshaft and it slid right in - go figure.  A two or three beer break would probably work also.

For those who may be interested, I just posted a pair of Stage 2 Edelbrocks in the for sale section.

Private Classifieds / FS Keith Craft Stage 2 Edelbrocks
« on: December 31, 2021, 11:38:43 AM »
Pair of Stage 2 Edelbrocks set up for Solid Roller cam.  Originally set up for Hydraulic Roller from Keith Craft Racing.  Correct Comp Cams springs for the solid cam.  Heads will need to be surfaced due to detonation guessing .010 - .015.  Located in Kernersville, NC (North Central between Winston-Salem and Greensboro).  I have close to 4K in the pair.  Asking $2,000 for them plus shipping.  I would prefer that any potential buyer or their representative come in person to inspect them if possible.  I have the capacity to disassemble the springs etc to view inside.  Can be reached at 336-723- Twenty four thirty eight.
Happy FE New Year.  By the way these are 427 castings.  My apologies to anyone calling about these heads.  Due to the daily number of calls trying to sell me something, I don't answer any calls with an unknown number.. Please leave message with name and number and I will get back to you.

The truck bell should have a (T) in the numbers on the bell like C6TE.

The transmission may not be the problem.  The pressure plate releasing at high RPM may be the culprit.  I have a diaphragm style that is causing the same problem - over centering I've been told with factory linkage.

Thanks for the input Brent.  By over centering do you mean that ideal release point on the pedal needs to be closer to the floor or just as the pedal is depressed?  My 70 year old leg needs the easiest clutch possible.   ;)

Does the McLoud or Ram diaphragm pressure plate/discs release at high RPMs ?  My Ram 12" does not want to release above 6K.

I ran a #2 ground cable from the battery to the rear frame rail and also one from the front rail to the engine.  Turns over nicely even when hot.  Can't have too many grounds on something pulling that many amps.  Also have a single puller electric fan with shroud that covers almost the entire radiator within the shroud.  Cools good except extended periods of red lights but cools back down when moving.  Each vehicle and engine is different on cooling needs so you will have to experiment if it runs too hot.  Example - same car ran hotter with a 428CJ than a 427 Side Oiler.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 2.5" vs 3" Exhaust and Muffler Options
« on: September 22, 2021, 11:34:58 AM »
I have the 3" Magna Flow from the headers out the rear valence cutouts.  This is a '68 without the staggered shocks.  It is very tight but doable for an experienced exhaust shop.  To me the Magna Flow 3" ovals are too loud but are non restrictive.  Like you said it is a matter of what sound you like.

With all the talk about stand height and geometry, what is the best way to determine if anything needs moving?  Simple please for us back yard builders.

Yes sir - good detective work at minimal expense.  Put one drop of oil in a pool of water and see how much it spreads on the surface or in your case follows gravity.  Our massive and heavy intakes (even aluminum) are extremely difficult to line up with both china walls and heads at the same time.  A little bit of misalignment setting the thing and subsequent movement to make it perfectly in place can create gaps in the sealer.  No cure for this other than taking some sealer and pushing some into the mating surfaces of the intake and china walls with the old trusty tool - your finger then torque to specs.  Not a cure all but will make you feel better that at least you tried.

FE Technical Forum / Gear Vendors
« on: May 29, 2021, 12:30:10 PM »
This is probably for our FE vendors or someone with knowledge of Gear Vendors Company.  On their home page there is a tab for applications and after selecting 4,5,6 speed manual transmissions their list comes up.  There is a listing for Toploader 17" tail shaft.  The part number is 189723 with the price as $3195.00.  But it says to contact them before purchase.  I emailed them and told them the application.  They emailed me back and said that they don't make one for this transmission and have no plans to do so in the future.  Well maybe I got a kid who sold underwear before the layoffs.  Then I called them and got the same response and was told that I would have to switch out the main shaft to a 14" before they can help me.  Not happening Batman!  Why would a company publish application information, assign it a part number and not produce the part?  If anybody has an (in) with Gear Vendors I would like an answer to that question.  There were many more Toploaders produced with the long 17" tail shaft.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Master Cylinder Upgrade
« on: May 25, 2021, 08:54:54 AM »
The brakes were spongy before the Wilwood was installed.  Figured the master was on it's last legs so now was the time to redo the whole system.  Replaced the rear shoes, wheel cylinders and the flexible line at the rear end.  I've got a 15/16 master coming so hopefully that will take care of the problem.  I know it's not going to stop like a modern car with ABS.  Thanks for the input.

Currently running a Mallory Unilite non vacuum advance distributor.  The full advance is too late and I need to know the spring part numbers to get it in the right RPM.  Thanks.
