Drag Week 2015 / Re: Guess Jay's best e.t. for Drag Week 2015!
« on: September 16, 2015, 01:33:22 PM »
I just looked at the results on Hot Rod's website, and the Nova is just a little over a tenth behind me.  Should be a great race, assuming my car lasts  ::)

Nurse!  prepare me 6 cases of JB Weld, stat!  Good luck!

Drag Week 2015 / Re: Drag Week 2015 Day 1, Gateway Motorsports Park

Bob, your "fix" won't work if you use the factory block plate.  That plate has a hole that indexes the starter directly, with the flange on the starter.  You can't move the starter in an out with the block plate in place.  You should always use the block plate on the FE, because one of its key purposes is to put the starter in the correct position.

Also make sure it's not "cocked" in any way - my car has the opposite problem in that if the lower bolt gets even a bit loose the starter will wing away from the flywheel.  Just a hair of play is all it takes.  Usually misfires in the trailer, which is a fun place to try and jack up a car.

I may have missed it in the way back - how are you keeping the trans temp in line at that low RPM.  I run a 4200 stall on the street and can go a ways, but 25~30 miles at 3000 or so (about 55~60) I need to let the trans cool off some.

Tuesday morning I called the IHRA to get some information on their licensing procedure.  As it turned out, they would accept my expired NHRA license as proof that I had made the qualifying passes, and they didn't require a physical, so I faxed over a membership and driver's license application.  They processed it right away and I got my IHRA license via email the next day!  It was great to deal with a competent racing organization.  With the IHRA license I figured I could run to the car's potential at the track on Friday.

We were an NHRA track one year -  never want to have to put up with that ever again.

Quite a story here and - at a lot lower level LOL - it's nice to know I'm not the only one putting up with little buggy issues trying to get that one motor in that one car then down the track and back will all the pieces still onboard.

FE Technical Forum / Re: What hone grit for moly rings?...
« on: May 13, 2015, 12:10:44 PM »
Check with the ring manufacturer.  It seems to run from 220 to 400.  I use a 320 hone and just split the middle.

I prefer the Moroso phenolic spacers

I have found that engines I build with a moly top ring will use oil, they never seem to seat for whatever reason. Maybe the final hone was to fine? Anyway I have went to the simple cast rings and no more problems with oil use.

Nick

And, for contrast, I run nothing but moly faced rings and with the proper bore finish, never have sealing or seating problems.  If everything is clean and the bore finished to the ring mfgs spec, the rings will seat before the cam break in is done.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 3/8 inch fuel line
« on: October 08, 2013, 12:35:12 PM »
It's something to check.  When I first put a 351C 4 V in the Falcon, it would run out of fuel about 5200 at the top of 2nd.  Traced the problem to the pickup tube, where the bend crimp inside the tank left the line no better than 1/4" ID.  Replaced it all with a #8 size full return system and a 140 GPH Mallory pump - no more issues in the last 13 years or so.

As above.  If you cannot run the latest IE with all the patches, best stick with Chrome or FireFox.  And note, you are good on XP until 4/18/2014.  After that, no more updates or support from MS.  I would budget for a new machine with Win7.  Win7 is easier to get along with - IMHO - than the new Win8.  Win8's interface is engineered for a touch screen, and from what little I've played with it makes it clunky with a mouse/keyboard.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Crankcase ventilation?
« on: January 04, 2013, 09:45:26 PM »
IMHO, since a PCV is a controlled weighted orifice that you will make things worse using two.  If one isn't creating negative pressure in the crank case and the oil is getting dirty fast, I'd do a leak down to see if the rings are failing.  As above, PCV on the right and restricted vent on the left has always been sufficient.  E85 dies not have that much alky in it - it's not anywhere near like running Methanol.  In any event, you can also reduce issues by not running the motor unless you run it long enough to get it to full operating temp.  The methanol racers don't start their cars unless they can let them run up to full temp.  Running cold and fat on alcohol is where the gunk comes from.

"351C - oh, a big block"

There is a guy with a I think a 71 Torino 351 C and across the windshield top he has a sticker "Big Blocks Rule"
I just don't know what to say to him.
I'll snap a pic next time I see the car.
I should really intro myself and get the story.

Have to break it to him gently that "big block/small block" are really Chevy terms.  We use 'em amongst the Ford crowd as short hand but it confuses the rest of the non-believ...ah, people with other makes.

Howdy from west Texas, y'all.  Not much to tell here - we're a his-n-hers bracket race family with a couple of pretty decent play cars.  No FEs in the house but I've followed Jay's work from the other FE list.  Keeping up with what people are doing is always good because you never know what tidbit of info might apply to what you are doing.  I typically run 351C stuff but that's getting scarce around here. We'll see.  My car has the spare 302 in it now because the last C came apart after two race seasons.   I'm considering modding the Falcon to take a 400 block so I can reuse the good heads and some of the other parts at least.  We moved in the winter of 2010 and 2011~2012 was spend building a new work shop, so no car stuff got done at all.  Spent all the money, so maybe next year  :D  I'd like to do the 4 door a bit like what Mike is doing to the Cougar.  Spent my allowance for the next 3-4 years on the shop, so...sometime!

Those mag folks are under a lot of pressure to get content out with little support and short deadlines.  Sometimes they are just going to blow it.  Gotta give them a little slack once in a while.  It's not quite like a tech writer that gets to work a while on particular article and still muffs some details.  But yea - that was a kind of the equivalent to the comment I hear sometimes -  "351C - oh, a big block"
