Non-FE Discussion Forum / AFR acquired by equity group
« on: July 02, 2021, 09:30:04 AM »
I've seen this announced in a few places, sucks to see it happen as I always thought AFR made a quality product (even though none for FE).  Sometimes these PE firms leave well enough alone, but majority of the time they start looking at the margins, and the only way a quality head like AFR can go is down.  Cheaper valves/locks/springs, larger stepover spec on the CNC'ing...they'll start chipping away at the quality IMO.  Seems like much of the aftermarket is going this way as the old brands are bought up.

"Air Flow Research is excited to announce that Taglich Private Equity, LLC (TPE) has acquired AFR. TPE is a lower middle-market PE firm that specializes in recapitalizations, management buyouts, and majority equity investments, targeting manufacturing, business services and consumer products companies. Taglich looks to partner with management teams that can take advantage of their expertise and background in order to optimize their company's growth potential and create long-term value.

AFR’s management team and employees will continue to operate out of its Valencia, CA facility, continuing to provide high quality, performance cylinder heads, service, parts, and machining associated with the AFR brand. Nothing will change; it will be business as usual. As President, Board Member and significant investor, Rick will continue to be involved with the organization, ensuring the foundation that his family and employees have built over the past 50 years will flourish under TPE’s guidance.

Taglich and AFR are excited about the growth prospects both organically and through future acquisitions of other aftermarket performance companies."

FE Technical Forum / Re: 3/8 Ball/Cup Pushrods
« on: June 22, 2021, 07:00:21 AM »
I think I could probably use 9.200 length pushrods if I can find any.

It's not a big deal to have a set made to whatever length you need. For the manufacturer, it's just a matter of cutting to length and pressing in the tip. Try Smith Bros. (no relation).

Ditto, I used Smith Bros and they were easy to deal with, if you want through the trouble to check and optimize pushrod length, just order exactly what you need.  I ended up with .025" difference on intake and exhaust on my setup, no big deal when ordering.

Hmm, could be my memory is fuzzy, I recall them being about the same height as a LR port, just located like a HR with less floor.  But, could be wrong.   I think it was already discussed that flow numbers aren't published because they can be misleading, but would like to see if someone has used a set and start to understand how they did and where they fit in best (OK for hydraulic roller street motors or do they need a more serious combo to really shine).

65
I saw these last year at the FE Reunion but haven't seen/heard of anyone running a set yet?  The OEM high risers seem to run great, anxious to see what an updated port with a filled floor will do.   I know Blue Thunder made some sets with filled floors but they haven't been available for years, and if I recall they required bespoke rockers?

Really depends how good the heads/intake are, even a sub 240* 390 could make ~500hp if it has a really good topend, which could use all the flow that carb would give.

Any decent 390 seems to be able to use a 750cfm Holley just fine, doubt that 800 Edelbrock is too big.  I run a plain old 4779 750dp in my Merc, it runs fine on top of my 390 with a 224* cam, and handles lugging 1800rpm in Overdrive just fine.  The Edelbrocks have great throttle response from what I've seen, had a few of them on mild combos over the years.

I'm in, shoot me a text and we'll figure out details.

I have purchased them for $150 and 250 in the recent past which were admittedly pretty good deals, I just saw a bunch at Ford’s of Carlisle for around 350 seems to be market

Is the survival intake being advertised as a HR like in highrise intake manifold as all performance aftermarket intakes used to be referred as or as an actual HR 427 type port?

I'm probably mistaken, but the intakes are advertised as high risers. There wasn't too much information other than that. I'm sure most people who are considering them already know the lingo. Here is the link below.

http://store.survivalmotorsports.com/blue-thunder-search-by-product-intake-manifold-ford-big-block-fe-390-427-428.html

I think it’s semantics, they’re listed as “high rise” not high riser.   It means the carb pad is raised, they’re a “performance” intake as opposed to a stock replacement like an Edelbrock Performer.

70
Just to confuse everything, a CJ port actually is a Low Riser port.

71
I think this is just another no brainer deal with the TFS heads a they have as small or smaller port size as any of the other heads, and marginally larger than ported OEM head that would be anywhere close to them.  For a “small” FE, seems they’re the clear choice.  The only thing I’d ponder is a TFS port made up to support a smaller 2.09 and throat/bowl size that may better match the 390 bore and cubes, but not very likely to happen and I have no clue if its really necessary (just looking at all the stroker small blocks making big power with 2.08s)

72
Might take awhile...

Sorry, rookie move :)

TuffStuff water pump, MSD distributor.  Can email me at leeson7373@gmail.com

I'll take the distributor, water pump, and starter if they're available.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Best FE Heads And Why ?
« on: June 07, 2021, 10:48:20 AM »
You should take a look at Jay's heads.

KS

I personally feel like Jay's heads would work fine on a street/strip deal as the cross section should be fine, just not sure they're needed if a guy is running a stock block as it would be in the "danger zone" for sure.  Plus I think the OP has a multi-stack EFI/carb type intake that wouldn't work with the heads.  Also not sure how well Jay's heads/intake will fit under a low hood line?

Correct, I have a stack EFI intake. Why wouldn't Jay's heads work ?

Amongst other concerns, the intake spacing is different. http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=6987.0
