I think I’d need to hear “This is such and such core material with Rockwell such and such and no steel gear is compatible so you’ll have to run a sacrificial bronze gear”, a specific scenario, rather than a general statement.  I just don’t see why one would run a bronze gear, I’ve seen one fail in a light street use/strip scenario with a mild solid roller.  The constant wondering when it would fail seems absolutely unnecessary since steel gears are available, had one running going on 4yrs now in my car.

How did OEM handle this with their rollers?  Cast gear on a steel core, or steel distributor gear?  Doesn’t seem like it needs to be complicated being that OEMs have run rollers for over 30yrs (granted newer engines don’t have gears).

FE Technical Forum / Re: 2.5" vs 3" Exhaust and Muffler Options

2.5" is down 20hp/20ftlb along the curve compared to 3.0" on a 600hp combo, would think a 700hp setup would be hurting it more.

Maybe just me, but to reach 700hp would seem to mean optimizing heads (ported vs cast), compression, cam duration/lift...right to a high level.  Then seems odd to go back and de-optimize the motor with small exhaust when there absolutely is an alternative with minimal drawback beyond being tougher to fit (but possible).

Now, if this was a street/strip combo where the exhaust is getting dropped at the track, that's a different scenario but I read this as street only.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Hot Rod Drag Week 2021 kicks off today
« on: September 15, 2021, 07:18:27 AM »
I like following drag week and it definitely helps fill the void since "corporate" big leagues drag racing became so boring.

Too bad that they're having issues with that Cougar, always my favorite car.  I've been on the fence with these "plug and play" EFI setups, there appears to be a LOT of issues with them, this sort of seals the deal that I'll either remain carbed or go with another setup if I ever do EFI.

Can't make it this year, got an offer for free place to stay and private grounds to hunt in Montana so had to take it.

FE Technical Forum / Re: LeMans Rod Bolt Question
« on: September 02, 2021, 11:47:47 AM »
I just did this conversion to ARP bolts recently, as stated you have to chase the threads.  I bought the bolts from POP as he specifies them as Lemans bolts and I wanted to ensure I had the right specs ARP 200-6001 https://stores.precisionoilpumps.com/ford-fe/?sort=featured&page=2.

Other note, it was discussed in the old FE forum by Barry I believe, but you have to ensure that the dowels are tight on Lemans rods.  Mine needed to be replaced.  https://stores.precisionoilpumps.com/ford-fe-390-427-428-lemans-rod-dowels/

FE Technical Forum / Re: Valve spring setup

One of the cams was a bigger hyd roller I got from you with .655 lift, so it could actually use a bit of clearance, and it needs less pressure over the nose so the locks would be win/win I think

FE Technical Forum / Valve spring setup
« on: August 30, 2021, 08:04:31 PM »
I have a bit of a hodgepodge of parts on the C1AEs i ported awhile back, installed some 2.15” valves with takeoff springs and hardware from a set of TFS.  Checking out the setup now, I have 1.860” installed height which gives me 186lbs on the seat and about 438lbs at .600” and 455ish at .625”.  I have two rollers I’m deciding on so not sure on open lift quite yet.  Bind is at .690-.700”.

Closed pressure seems pretty high, there’s a .055” spring locator.  I’m not sure if they make an .035” but if they did, the extra .020” would give me around 170lbs on the seat.  Any advice on spring setup for a hydraulic roller?

Agreed, it's carrying some decent RPM for the cam, my AFR205s peaked at 6300 with a 242/250 cam, although jury is out if a Vic Jr intake is a bottleneck at that level.

Looking at the episode where they flowed them, they did 395cfm @ .800" (cue the 'flow isn't everything" comments), so that jives with the comments that you'd start to see these heads pick up with a more serious combo.   I haven't built or really researched any small block heads beyond about an AFR220 level, so not sure how much you can get out of an inline head, but seems that's pretty good canted valve territory.

My thought is, unless you are really married to a small block, seems for the fitment issues and $$ obstacles of these heads, I'd just be building up a Boss headed big block.  I think these heads are $7300ish with the bespoke rockers, and I'd assume it'll need special pistons, headers, etc that are the same obstacles you'd see with a big block, without the huge displacement difference.

Think the guy is just one of those strange socially awkward types.  He throws shade at all types of designs on his page, but his pet vehicles are stock mid 80s S10 and Blazers.  Odd duck.

I got a kick out of the last reader comment, "Do I see some sort of adapter to allow use of a 351C manifold?"  FE Power, still flying under the radar... ;D ;D

Did anyone see the other comment?

"The poorest engineered of all of the 60's engines to come out of Detroit. A wedge style combustion chamber with symetrical intake ports. The worst lubrication system and an extremely heavy engine block for its diminutive 352 cubic inches. Only an emotional "Ford lover" would build this joke of an engine."

That was from a big dork named Dennis Moore, who apparently is a professional armchair engine builder.  Either that, or a Chevy guy.

I just had to snoop his page, that guy is an A #1 world class asshole.  Sorry.  I'm not even indicting his political views, he refers to "rural americans" disparagingly dozens of time, a true elitist prick.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Warning against using ARP L19 rod bolts...
« on: August 22, 2021, 09:11:36 PM »
I’m sure it’s not a black/white issue for when L19s would be “needed” or suggested, but what general type of RPM or application would they be needed?  6500rpm heavy piston, 7000 truck puller, 7500rpm bracket racer…or something more radical?  Trying to understand if any hand wringing trying to decide to take the risk of running them is more an academic exercise than practical application in an FE?

FE Technical Forum / Re: 1967 Shelby GT500 Stocker!!

It's probably pushing 20yrs ago (!!) but I saw the Hawks and Bailey stocker at an all Ford show running like that, pulling big wheelstands.  Check it out in the pits, vacuum secondary carb, just leafsprings with no slapper bars no nothing.....and he's running in the 10s.  Just absolutely amazing what those stocker guys do with those "original" combos.
