FE Technical Forum / Re: Intake Comparo question linkage type used
« on: December 08, 2015, 06:42:03 PM »
Doug: yes I do have a couple of extra 3X2 linkages but just wanted to know if Jay thought some cylinders would be lean with just the middle two working until the progressive came onboard.
So on a dyno the change in RPM and output values are how fast the engine can come up to speed? I would have thought that it was a gradual increase in the throttle.
Novice here in this respect.

FE Technical Forum / Intake Comparo question linkage type used
« on: December 08, 2015, 01:44:42 PM »
Jay: I realize that the tests on multiple carb intakes was done at higher flow rates but wonder how the linkage acted. Most of the RPM was probably above where the 2nd carb kicked in.
Did you use positive or progressive linkage? The book doesn't state. The cross rams almost have to be positive.
My question comes from the fact that I'm working on linkage for my 6X2 intake and would like to go with progressive. It would really be difficult to balance 6 carbs even though there are balance runners in the plenum.
The Edelbrock 3X2 I have uses 3 Stromberg WW's with positive linkage with ball bearing ends on the shafts. I'll probably never use it but it looks somewhat impressive on the shelf.

Rory: yes Plymouth-Dodge, GMC large trucks thru I think 1966, Studebaker had a rear draft model as well.
Somewhere I heard that even some Mercury's had them.

I'd like to see 4 of the WW's sitting on that intake.

Here is a table of CFM rates I posted here a year or so ago.
The Holley 2100 from my understanding is close to the ECG So flow ratings are as follows

Carb Model    CFM@3.0"  CFM@1.5"

94                   251            176
81                   192            135
48                   250            175
LZ                   229            160
ECG                264             185

Strom 97         214             150
Strom WW       357             250   not sure of which venturi size 2 variations one @ 1.125 and another @ 1.1875

Outstanding job and artistic.
A thought on carb choices. Original Stromberg 97's are really expensive and even the reproduced ones are costly.
Why not think about using Stromberg WW's? Higher CFM, more modern design (1950's and 1960's) 4 bolt base the same as the Rochester  and they cost only $40 to $70 each depending on the condition.
I just bought WW 10 parts carbs for $100. I can probably assemble 4 or 5 out of the batch.
A picture of the look.

FE Technical Forum / From The thread Head choices: Okay rate the heads
« on: December 03, 2015, 10:16:25 PM »
Hope I've got most listed  rate them as cast and maybe best to port.
Jay B delete this if you think not necessary but:  Joe Crain or a few others may have some input as to experience. Barry R?? or yourself??

Not looking to see LR-MR-HR-Tunnel port heads but those found on regular cars & trucks--- Maybe also rate some of the LR heads for me as well
Lets use a 1 to 5 rating--- 5 being the best performance for mid range torque and HP at 5000 rpm

Take him under your wing. The hobby needs new blood, and a little encouragement and help goes a long ways.

Jeff: That's part of why I joined the Car Club here in Brookings. They have a club member "sponsor" a teenager interested in cars. The sponsor pays the teens annual club dues and her/his car gets entered in a teen challenge in their own class at our local show. We've currently got 4 teens in that part of the club and more interested.
Kind of a novel idea. The club also gives about 90% of it's income to charity, this year over $7000.  The rest is to better club exposure (advertisement, Christmas lights, tips for dinners out when the entire club is invited, etc...). I'll be giving advice on his Mach 1 and his 2 Ford early 70's PU's.

Talked to him again tonight at the Christmas light show ( 400,000) lights so maybe 1000 strings and over 100 lighted displays. All in a 5 acre garden flower park
Quite a show for a town of 6000 residents.

The Mustang is a 1970 Mach 1, 351 Cleveland, 4bbl with a C6 trans. Originally teal blue with a black interior.
Cowl vents leaked when under trees and humid/rain for 5 years and the floors-sub rails-rear deck area are  really rusted thru.
Seats/interior are toast but the engine and trans were a rebuild. I'll get some pictures and a full vin in a couple of weeks so will be able to ID the rest of the car.

351 Cleveland, fastback. Met him last night when I volunteered at a Christmas Light show.
He said it had been outside uncovered for years, and in this wet and ocean salt mist it had rusted pretty badly.
I'll take a look at it in the next week or two but wonder what Forums might help him the most.
When I see the car I'll take some pictures.
I volunteer for the light show again tomorrow night (for our local car club)  so I can ask more questions then.

FE Technical Forum / Full sump oil pan
« on: November 30, 2015, 12:42:39 PM »
Part of your question was a full sump pan. Not to many cars this would fit into.
This is from a large truck FE. My plan is to use it in a car with a dropped I-beam axle no cross member in the way, the engine has a pretty good setback.

CJShaker: are those ETIII wheels on the rear of your car?
If not what wheel are they?

Here are a few pictures of the 1958 Edsel manifold

TomP if you note the temp sender is in the WP bypass tube.

I've got 4 intakes I'll supply

1958-9 Edsel "higher riser"  Cast Iron 4bbl you supply the carb. (lightest of all CI intakes @ 72 Lb.)

Edelbrock 3X2 with Stromberg WW mounts  More CFM on each carb

Edelbrock 6X2 with Stromberg WW's  1"adapters for the 4X3 base and to clear the Valve Covers

Latham Supercharger Intake and Supercharger with all pulleys but adapted to 6 Stromberg WW's (I expect this to be like a miniature dog pulling a truck pull sled)

Just putting this out there for future consideration
