FE Technical Forum / Re: piston skirt clearance
« on: March 22, 2024, 02:50:54 PM »
I'll let others chime in on the cam tightening when mains are torqued, I've never come across that issue. But otherwise, all those specs are better than probably the majority of the engines that came out of the factory back in the day. Unless it was a high-end build, I'd let 'er fly. There's been tens of thousands of engines rebuilt with way worse tolerances, we just happen to be in an age where anything less than perfect is now considered unacceptable by many.

If the machinist has been doing this for 50 years, there's a chance he's using much older machining equipment, so those tolerances might not be completely his 'fault'. Not saying that's the case, just that a lot of guys can't afford the expensive newer equipment to keep up with modern expectations, unless they are trying to cater to performance builds specifically. A guy that is on the verge of retirement, as someone who's been doing it for 50 years is likely to be, is not going to shell out tens of thousands of dollars with no chance of recouping those costs.

I sold my '58 last year to help fund 2 other projects. Owned the car for almost 40 years. I hated to do it, but it went to a good home where the restoration was started immediately. I love 2 door wagons.

It is nice seeing some of the FoMoCo greats getting their just due and respect, but there is a large part of me that thinks these people are insane, all the moreso when considering many of these cars are purchased without ever being personally inspected.

When you can blow $267,000 on a car that will never ever be driven, I think it's more about bragging rights of just owning one. Look at all these YouTube videos coming out about guys that have 20-40-100 rare or valuable cars just sitting in barns collecting dust or slowly rotting away. Haggerty has had quite a few of them. Crazy.

Invest in the best 1350 joints and billet caps that you can get. With a spool, especially on the street, the stresses placed on those pieces, as well as axles and wheel studs, cannot be overstated.

That casting looks really clean. The foundry must have some experienced guys for it to turn out that good on the first pour.
Using a CNC on those would make me a nervous wreck. One error in the coding would result in an expensive paper weight on an otherwise very nice part.
Good luck to Dan, Derek and you guys on this project.

All good points.

Wait? What, what.....what just happened here?
Did Frank just agree with Bill and Brent?
Where am I? What has happened to this place?  ;D

I get the serrated cap concept, but don't like the idea on a steel rod. Just like the 'cracked caps' they use on today's engines, they are a one and done deal. For an aluminum rod, they make good sense.

Starting and stopping in 2 different states sounds like a real PITA for anybody trailering their car to the event, or are they trying to discourage that?

Nice Shady 8), They are 59 Fords on the transport?
The things in the window, is that different insulators from powerlines?
[/quote]

Yep, those are power line insulators. Got a collection of them myself. Kids today would probably think they're butt plugs.

That wagon is being done right! Very clean work. That seems to be a common trait with all the cars you come around, or work on yourself.

Me and a few friends that I've had since childhood were just talking the other day, about how we're all lucky to be alive after some of the stunts we pulled. We used to bumper ski on cars in the wintertime. Wait at an intersection in town until a car pulled up, then we'd run out and grab the rear bumper and go skiing. Streets were snow covered all winter back then. Never did anything destructive to other peoples property, just ourselves..lol

i've been collecting parts for my build but crap like this is why i'm seriously considering jumping into a 460 based motor..

It's still easier now to find parts than it used to be, even in the '70s and '80s. And there are still several good options for FE heads. It's hardly a 'make or break' deal.

FE Technical Forum / Re: FE Race & Reunion - update

After the last time I attended, my Son donated a nice amount of money to get his and my names on a section of a new "wall" that he was saying he was going to build. My Son thought it would be a nice thing to help out, and have a reminder that I had raced and won there. 5 years later, no wall, and no response as to what is happening with it. Ignored emails. Money gone. Forcing his "Zoo Crew" on T-shirts is a childish thing, IMO. I have no respect for the new owner.

FE Technical Forum / Re: toploader shifting
« on: February 22, 2024, 03:46:43 PM »
I had this same problem with mine after putting in new blocker rings and replacing 2nd gear, from wear on the engagement teeth. It was hit or miss as to whether or not it would go into 2nd at RPM. It shifted better before, with the worn factory parts. Everything looked good, and everything was in spec with new input and output bearings and no excessive nose movement due to shaft wear. I've seen the same problem before on a 302 Maverick, after a toploader rebuild with new blocker rings. I have no way of verifying it, but I think that new blocker rings are not of the same quality that the factory stuff was. Whether it's the friction "ridges" or the cone angle, I don't know, but they just don't seem to work as good. The engagement teeth on the new gear looked fine, but maybe the friction angle was off on it as well, being a reproduction part. The friction angles really need to be perfect for them to work as they should. In short, reproduction parts just aren't up to the quality standards as the factory stuff, IMO. No shock there though, as that is pretty much to be expected with reproduction parts. They work fine for street duty, but just don't cut it for high speed shifting.

You could go the route of eliminating every other tooth, as they did in the days of yore, but I don't know if that'll cure the issue. I ended up switching to a Jerico since I was getting more serious about racing it, and I knew I would just end up hurting the toploader, so never did bother to "cure" the issue. If I had been serious about keeping the toploader, I suppose I would have tried to locate some NOS original rings and a 2nd gear, to see if that helped, but that certainly would be a PITA.

Never heard of those lifters.  I wince when I see a mechanic use one of those abrasive wheels on or around an engine.  Those things spit the abrasive media everywhere as a very fine grit.

You could literally see crap being slung everywhere, not to mention the fine grit that you couldn't see. I stopped watching at that point. No way in he!! you would be able to get that stuff out. I wouldn't let that guy work on my grandsons bicycle.

I made a set just like that when I put my C4 block 390 in my '68 Highboy. They're just used for adapting early blocks to later chassis mounts. I just used 1/4" steel plate, for about $10, and a couple hours time to whittle them out.
