Too bad it's a CL ad tho. Dealing with some folks on CL can be sketchy. I figure if the guy is legit he shouldn't have a problem emailing a paypal invoice. Then just put em back in their original boxes and ship.

270ish at .519 seems really good for D2s. I wish I could afford Mr Les. One things for sure, more cam will make a noticable difference if needed.
Our head work sounds identical. After all my work, I'm hoping for 285ish at .600ish out of my C4s. I'm trying to make up for my local altitude. 4500ft approx.
I love the red, are you keeping that color?

Looks good Ross! Not too much rust around the skirts. The chrome around the windshield ate my lunch on my 72. I will pay big$$$ to have somebody else replace the winshield next time.
With your 445, are you keeping the D2 heads for the exhaust ports?

I've found some older heads that look alot better than the C8's and D2's. So I will ask the same question. Which set should I grab. C1AE-6090A or C4AE-6090G?
I will be going to CJ size valves. I know the exhaust ports won't line up with truck headers also. Fabricating a set of fenderwell headers is in the plan.

Well I went to pick up the motor last night and the heads were all gone. Probably a blessing in disguise. So I got a std bore D4 390 short block with the reinforced mains but not a mirror 105 for $150. I will keep looking for CJ castings. I see single CJ castings on epay sometimes.

850 HP is very respectable. Your R code is gonna haul the mail!

Thanks guys! I know it seems silly to be asking questions about garden variety parts. But I'm glad I did, I forgot about the exhaust ports on the D2 heads.  I'll grab the C8ae's. If I use these, they will end up getting worked over heavily and installed on the 445 I'm building for my truck. I'm shooting for 500hp so the heads are gonna have to flow well.

I've found a couple of 390s on craigslist and I'm going to buy one of them. I've already checked them out. One is 4.050, I think it's a 105 casting. Seems like a good starting point for a stroker. But the guy has a couple of sets of heads to choose from. Should I grab the C8AE's or the D2TE's. I'll sit and grind for hours on the best set if I can't find some suitable CJ castings. Which ones flow better? Which ones would be the better head for a set of CJ valves?

Muey bueno!!!!!! Your aluminun TIG is coming along nicely also. I see a sight glass on the front of the pan too. That's a good idea for several reasons.

It's ok to TOOT your own horn, if somebody else TOOTS it first.

Absolutely I'll take one!
I'm curious Jay. Have you done any more dyno tests with the PSE base since completing your book? Just wondering if other 351C manifolds would perform better than the ones you tested. Hey... how about a mini book featuring the pse base? ;D

My name is Kevin McCullah. I was born and raised in Grand Junction CO. I'm a young guy in the FE world. (my odometer turned 42 yesterday :D) I feel so privileged to be a member here, with what has got to be the absolute braintrust of the FE engine. I post a little on the "other" FE forum but mainly just read threads and try to keep my head down, if you know what I mean.
When I was 14 I took an interest in machining and worked as an apprentice at a local machine shop for 5 years. I currently work in an industrial laundry as a plant mechanic/electrician. Before this job I spent 10 years as a plant mechanic/machinist with Coors. No not the brewery, the technical ceramic division. They made ceramic ballistic tiles for armoring the interiors of Humvee's, Striker vehicles and Abrams tanks. I also work part-time for a company called Western Slope Industries where I started as a machinist in 1989. I build machinery that folds and glues paper boxes.
I got the FE bug from my dad. He raced drag cars, circle track, sand hill climbs, mud drags and tractor pulls. All with FE's. His last big effort was in 1985. He raced in the Colorado hill climb circuit. His car was a 74' Torino with a 427 HR. It was a tough gig on a blue collar salary.
Since my divorce in 2009, I've experienced an FE revival. I finally finished building a 390 that I started in high school. I dropped it into 1972 highboy that dad bought when I was 6 and have been racing the crap out of it. It feels good to have a hobby and compete.
I will be starting some kind of FE stroker project soon. Will post my progress.
