Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: TKO600 girdle
« on: October 19, 2020, 09:59:48 AM »
I think I remember your original post about using the TKO, and I think I responded with my own story.  I bought one of the Swarr Girdles and it was well made.  But it did not keep my case from cracking.  When mine lost 3rd gear, it also cracked the front of the case even with the girdle.  I still say  a TKO and

Well, looks like I'll be passing on this round of cranks also.  I expect some time down the road I'll be kicking myself for doing so.

4.250" and 4.125" are off-the-shelf cranks and wouldn't be included in this scenario.  They are available for about $700 cheaper, unless you want some extra features.

Since a 4.250 stroke is an off-the shelf option, what's the cost if someone wanted the above treatment of "gun drilled mains, shaped counterweights, scalloped flywheel flanges, etc," but done to an existing 4.250 crank that they might have "on the shelf"?  Still $1895, or perhaps somewhat cheaper since no custom stroke needs done?

I'm considering one, ............ but you can't put me down as a "definitely" yet, I'm still studying possibilities and finances, wants vs needs etc.

Pretty impressive performance for 'out of the box' heads, & what seems to me to be a relatively small flat tappet cam for a 482 inch engine.  Like someone asked above, is there a more detailed build thread on this engine posted somewhere?

Is that cam a solid flat, or a solid roller?

Good rocker shafts, billet stands with supports, non-adjustable OE rockers with tight shaft clearance.

Who makes those stands / supports?  Are those from P.O.P.?  I don't recall seeing that exact setup.

Is there some inherent problem with the TKO 600 that causes them to break?

From the other thread a year ago, that I pasted a link to up above, there is more info. on what takes out 3rd gear:

I was checking here for FERR info since I couldn't make it this year and Just noticed a bunch of post here since the last time I looked. Interesting to see so many blown TKO's! I was at the Detroit Autorama and saw some Tremek reps with a cutaway TKO. Couldn't help but go over and show them photos, they showed me what happens. They said the counter shaft flexes and showed me why. The counter shaft is supported on the ends of the shaft nothing in the middle, combined with the rotational force of the gears at high rpm and a 650 hp FE motor, it flexes in the middle going into third, 7000 rpm for me, the force makes it try to jump a tooth and takes out the whole thing. I've since had my TKO rebuilt by Liberty and just hung it in the Comet yesterday. Went back to steel wheels with 10 x 30 Firestone pie crust cheater slicks. When I took the Weld wheels off and put the steel wheels on it was amazing how much heavier the steel wheels are! I am putting all the exhaust and street parts back on it and drive it on the street. I made it too heavy for launching it hard at the track. So no drag race crash box for this one but some easy runs and shifting at 6,500 won't hurt. But I got a 10.80 out of it with 28 in Street ET's! Should have not put the 30 inch slicks on it but I had fun! I think it would have run a 10.50 if the trans didn't blow! I need a dedicated race car.

Thanks, Steve

Regarding the TKO600 in a heavy vehicle, and used on the drag-strip, see this thread:  http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=6508.0
One of the posts with a 3rd gear failure is mine.  If you plan on any significant number of drag-strip passes, I'd say the failure is when, not if.

I saw both of those finals, & I was pulling hard for Pond to win his.  And I had seen the "FE" stitched into Gary Ericksen's jacket and I was wondering if his Probe was FE powered, that's cool, thanks for the info on him.

I hate the fact that you can plop down the cash and drive a 10 sec. new car out of the show room.

One one hand I think it's very cool that the factories are building cars like this.................   But I also agree with you.  I think someone should have to put more effort into gaining that kind of performance, that's too easy.  But if they have the money, more power to 'em I suppose.  That's the world we live in now.

Thanks all for the input. I'm not in possession of the b.housing, but considering buying it. It's pitched as a 6 bolt SBF by the seller, it's just so odd looking I wanted to try to confirm what it is first. My internet searches haven't helped much on this one.

Not sure, I'm hoping someone will recognize it.  It's pitched in an ad as just an old Lakewood for SBF, but the bolt hole arrangement does seem odd.

Could anyone here confirm whether or not this is an early version of a SBF 302, 351 Lakewood bellhousing?  Or is it possibly by another company other than Lakewood, it's evidently more than 30 years old?

Btw, that is the driest, cleanest and sharpest underhood look to a racer than I've seen in awhile.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. Beautiful car.  It's one of my favorites.
