FE Technical Forum / Speed Pro L-2291F Pistons
« on: February 05, 2022, 11:41:46 AM »
What is the approximate compression ratio everyone is seeing with a set of Speed Pro L-2291F 30 pistons at zero deck used with C1AE heads?

Thanks

Well like everything else these days we are behind schedule that is why I am digging up this old thread.  We are finally starting on our '64 P-code 390 build.  We pulled the heads off the other day and found them to be C1AE heads.  This definitely was an unopened original engine that we pulled from a '64 Custom police car many years ago.  It still had the shorty cast iron headers on it.

This is going to be a fairly mild build but we are going to upgrade the valves to a set of CJs.  Can anyone tell me what the approximate compression ratio will be for the C1AE heads with a set of Speed Pro L-2291F 30 pistons at zero deck?  We already have a set of these pistons and would like to use them.  Thanks

I'm putting together a low buck 390 to put in my '66 F-100.  I'm using a factory 390GT/428CJ cam that we had on hand.  Do these cams work best installed straight up or advanced/retarded?  It is a 390 with cleaned up CJ heads and a Performer RPM intake.

They built 11 1962 lightweight Galaxies.  Six of the eleven were converted to 1963 models with the body swap on the '62 frame.  Brannan's '63 823 was a converted '62.  824 was a standard 1963 lightweight Galaxie and was his backup car and driven by other people at times.

They grind them in house.  I bought a "B" cam from them a couple of years ago.

I think the AA cam is a match.

Would you be willing to share the markings on the cams?
The 352-360 has C0AE on the end with orange paint between the front lobes.  We haven't dug out the 390-375 yet.  I've always thought the two cams were the same but I have seen it also questioned.

One thing you can do quickly before cam doctor is just measure the lobe lifts with a 1.5" mic.
I do this on all cams, all 16 lobes, then (years) later you can compare the wear on each lobe.

The main controversy on the early cams is that some places list a .480 net lift, which would make this cam different from the 427 cam's .500 net lift.

Other than that the known "advertised" durations are all the same, just measured differently. Some places say 306-306 advertised, others 274-274 advertised. Of course .050 is not published anywhere so a full measurement would be good to get the history right.
Where is the XBA? I will take a look and see if I missed that.

It looks like we will be doing a 390-330 build this winter.  We have a complete, what we think is untouched '64 p code 390-330 engine.  It will go into my P-code 1964 Galaxie 4-speed, when it is done.  I believe the heads on these are the same as the 390-300?  How about the intake.  Is there any difference between a 390-300 & 390-330 except the solid lifter block and cam?  I am aware of the cast iron shorties on the 330.  How is the stock solid lifter cam?  I'm considering a Comp 270S but could possibly stay with the stock cam if it looks ok upon disassembly.  Would these heads benefit form 2.09/1.65 valves without any porting?  I'm trying to get a came plan together before we tear into this thing.

I believe earlier in this thread Werby or Royce were considering doing this.  Hopefully they will answer up.  I may also be able to dig up an original 1961 390-375/401 camshaft.  Neither are for sale but we could loan them out as long as they are returned.
