Private Classifieds / Cleveland Style intake (Boss 302)
« on: November 04, 2021, 11:00:58 AM »
This might be the wrong place to post, but I know several of you guys have some intakes. I'm trying to find a tunnel ram for a Boss 302, or an adaptor for a 351C 4v to a 8.2 deck Boss 302. I have several original Boss intakes if anyone has one and wants to trade/sell. Thanks.

Haha, this would be a good time to try a crank scraper. Maybe it would show a small gain.

Oh yeah, it has Comp valve Springs. That's a cool truck! It sounds pretty good under load.

Let's call it 4200 lbs then.

FE Technical Forum / 3/8 Ball/Cup Pushrods
« on: June 21, 2021, 11:17:54 PM »
I got back to the shop this evening to measure the pushrod length. I have not checked them all yet, but to get a ballpark estimate I measured a couple across the banks. They were pretty consistent at 9.1955 give or take 0.0001". I only measured a couple, so that range may change. I tried to set the adjusters as equally as possible. I snaked my dial indicator tip down on to the lifter cup, and measured preload with one full turn of the adjuster. I think Brent said one turn would do it. It was dead on. I was a little surprised how accurate just eyeballing one turn was. I didn't have any 3/8 machinist gauge balls, so I used a depth gauge to check the cup depth to know exactly how much to subtract from the overall measurement. I think I could probably use 9.200 length pushrods if I can find any.

Just for info, Holley has pretty much placed all it's casting operations , to suppliers, many years ago. Holley was faced with no domestic casting plant capacity, for the alloy being used and found "off shore" suppliers back in the mid 90's. The machining and assembly have always been in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Especially today, the suppliers of diecast aluminum are stretched pretty thin.

We were still having most of the traditional zinc stuff cast stateside in the 1980s/1990s.  Some of the spread bore zinc had been done in Taiwan with marginal results.  And they had the aluminum 4010/4011 castings done in Portugal with good results.  No idea where they are doing things now, but it looks like nobody really wants to cast in zinc these days between environmentals and corrosion vulnerability from alcohol in fuels.

Barry is right. Positively charged zinc will readily react with negatively charged alcohol to produce ZnO (zinc oxide- essentially zinc rust). It's a good point. Without any type of coating, there would be corrosion issues due to using 10% ethanol fuel.

Haha, with my luck I may need a tow to get there. It will probably be a swb 1969 F100. However, I do think I could reduce the weight to 3600 lbs with a driver.

Oh I'm sorry. I meant the Edelbrock RPM cam. It specs out at 236/236 @ 0.050", .572/.572" lift 108 lsa.

Just curious what kind of et and mph to expect. The build is a 401 c.i., around 10:1 compression with 6090N CJ heads (lightly ported with ss vales and a 3 angle valve job) with Harland Sharp 1.76 roller rockers. It has an 800 Edelbrock AVS 2, RPM cam, and RPM intake. FlowTech headers, probably 3" exhaust. T5 transmission (I know it's a little weak. May run a 4 speed-- not sure yet) with 4.10 gears.  Race weight will be around 3400- 3600 lbs. Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor Rebuild

Thanks. I shot Jim a PM.
Man, when I was a kid my dad and uncle used to get rebuild kits all the time. They must have gotten harder to find in recent years.

Where can I find a good rebuild kit? We can buy a new one if needed. We have several CJ distributors and some 352/390 distributors. They're all probably worn though. Thought about rebuilding one, because my dad likes points. He ran a PerTronix kit once in the 90's and it failed while on a trip, so he isn't too keen on those. I think Brent Lykins mentioned a guy who does distributors. Does he have any contact info? Thanks for any help.

Scratch that. I was wrong. They only touch when rocked back more than it ever will while running.

I'm going over my rocker arm alignment and noticed that a couple of the rockers are touching the valve spring. I'll try to get a picture. It looks like it's touching on the sides where the top wire of the spring is clocked facing the rocker arm body.

Yeah, I meant flywheel horsepower. I like to gauge things by flywheel measurements when I'm just referring to an engine alone. Huge difference in fwhp and rwhp. At least it is with the LT1/LS1 stuff I'm used to fooling with. A 400 gross fwhp LS1 is just a stock engine with headers. With manifolds, they make around 280ish rwhp auto and 300ish with the T56, and run in the high 12 to mid 13 second range at 104-107 mph (in a corvette or F-body), but a 400 rwhp car is capable of high 11's at around 116 mph.  I have a ton of 650 Edelbrock carburetors too. Haha, I can only remember where a couple of them came from. I figure this combo will probably be close to 300 at the tires, fingers crossed. It should pull pretty well.

FE Technical Forum / Re: RPM Intake CJ Heads-- Gaskets
« on: June 18, 2021, 02:45:03 PM »
Floors are essentially stock. It's more bowl, roof, and guide work than anything. I'll use the RPM intake. I've known engine builders to use those print-o-seal gaskets on other engines, but they always scrape the "sealing material" off. I'm not sure if that helps. My dad never liked them on anything he worked on.
