are your block pins in place- some pins were made to rotate to center trans. (offset pins) - need pins not just bolts also check depth of starter drive to flywheel for full drive engagement - john        old iron

before leaving for nam in 67 -i drove a 66 fairlane w/427 and jardine(sp?) headers a lot of miles cal./vir./missou/wis/ --starters were a challenge - on the road anyway- one pipe- cut and welded two bolt flanges (two) and made a s.s. heat shield clamped to pipe -- no problem after with shield/and extra room--- current 67 w/505inch with hooker 6376 big tube and slip fit and clocked powermaster not too bad even for real senior to change--only two ex. port bolts and starter bolts---pickup crossmember may need two flanged tubes but will elimate some nasty words--but still may require adult beverage or two       john-oldiron

the pads at the end of your spring leaves sure are telling you what is going on--and why they are falling out-- CLAMP ALL THE LEAVES-- good oil filled 50/50 shocks will cure most of what is  going on -- you can stagger the shocks (428 mustang)     I have owned 66/67 fairlanes from late 66 to present! in 67 my fairlane was 2x4/crane cam/jardine headers/al flywheel/427-made good power---saw many 4000/5000 starts twisted some input shafts and had to weld straps to spring pads to axle as trying to bend/rotate --- tires were biggest 15 inch re caps I could get-----but no wheel hop--later used bars like the t-bolt deeper gears (4.57s) as main leaf tried to bend by front spring mount---still have my old 66 body with 3-4 inch long cracks at rear window/post from good old 427/toploader abuse--2x like Barry said --also used twist in wedge in front spring to load right rear-- 90/10 front shocks to help transfer weight-still put 1000s of highway miles on ride seemed OK for twenty something back in the day!!!         john oldiron

I am building a iron block/head hi-rise -a gapp/roush std bore side-oiler found some pits in a bore and decided to sleeve one for sure .    the block was prepped by g/r with o-rings etc. not going                 to cut whole deck-o-rings- have tool/die friend and good shop --took sleeve w/in one thou. of deck    can be done     this was on c/c machine              john-oldiron

FE Technical Forum / Re: Great interview with Ed Pink on the SOHC
« on: July 19, 2023, 12:29:49 PM »
I worked at caterpillar plant in joliet ill 63/64 and drove/raced fords starting late 50s. I picked up a flyer from a Ford dealer that listed a cammer option at the time (63/64) when Ford was trying       to get it approved for nascar -chrysler was bitching like hell and france and company always would short Ford when possible!!  SOME OLDTIMERS may remember the latemodel sportsmans class that ran in the mid sixtys (or not) you can look up the class and record!  france and co. would cheat ford at any chance !!  MY neighbor (now passed) holds the Daytona track record for the class also the     southern boys did not like northern boys beating or running faster than any of them! MY NEIGHBORS FORD STARLINER RAN 165/167 mph IN ABOUT 1966/67 HIS NAME IS ERNIE TUFF FRANCE AND   THE BOYS MADE ERNIES FORD CARRY AN EXTRA 400 POUNDS IN THE TRUNK !!! ERNIE always said it was because he was north of the Mason/Dixon line!      THE CAR IS STILL 100% COMPLETE AND  100% ORIGIONAL -----UP TO 5/10 YEARS AGO ERNIE WOULD BRING THE CAR TO A DRIVE-IN AT WINONA MN. AND FIRE IT UP!!      THE 165/167 SPEED WAS AVERAGE !! I BELIEVE I HEARD  207 ON THE FRONT AND 209 ON THE BACK---ALSO I BELIEVE FIREBALL ROBERTS DROVE THE CAR AND CALE YARBOROGH           FRANCE AND CO.(NASCAR) WILL SCREW FORD AT ANY CHANCE!!!   (PS) ERNIE LEFT THE STEEL PLATES FOR ALL TO SEE!!!!                  JOHN  oldiron

ALWAYS- check battery with good LOAD tester- NOT volt meter --you must ask/watch to have done                  correctly      must be set to battery amp rating more= better750 to 1000     load applied for at least               15 seconds voltage MUST stay 11.6/8 or better-  you will often get what for/why from sellers or NO                  equipment to do proper test        next upgrade battery cable size more=better make sure ends are               installed correctly    use star washers as they cut in a little to make good connection on ends                            in wis./mn. -20/30 temps need good stuff as much as 450/500 inch hot motor    on OEM starters I                      used a roller bearing in the nose cone NOT bushing BIG change -- or use aftermarket starter if needed         I worked at military equipment site with 5000 pieces of equipment 1000s of battery to maintain with                   battery shop 10/15 years used best snap/on load testers a must!!!

all of above- if this is a older build make SURE the fuel system is cleaned /flushed very good !!  at that comp. ratio i would use my favorite snoco 112 while getting the tune right --also if spring pressure wasnt released on long storage you need to be sure of spring pressure-good luck john  ---                                      old iron
