FE Technical Forum / Re: Need Advice on Fox Body FE Project
« on: December 28, 2022, 07:45:07 AM »

- Is one year in that 78-83 model run preferable from a racing standpoint?  I know the 2 door sedans are probably lightest, but I'm leaning towards a 2 door Futura.  They are all pretty much the same

- I'd be looking at a tubular K member to save some weight, and run aftermarket front suspension components.  I've looked at quite a few K members online, but haven't seen any that are set up for an FE.  Is there such a thing?  If not, can one for a small block Ford be modified to work?  Try Team Z Motorsports

- I would plan to run subframe connectors along with a full cage.  All the subframe connectors I've come across are for Mustangs, which are too short to fit a Fairmont.  Does anyone know of a source for Fairmont subframe connectors, or do I have to fabricate those?  Try Team Z Motorsports

- How about fiberglass hoods and bumpers for those cars (which are legal in the class), are they available?  Try HO fibertrends

- Where can I get a 9" rear end housing that has the proper suspension attachment brackets already welded on?  I don't want to try that myself on this rear suspension, and all the rear ends I've seen online are complete units.  I prefer Mark Williams axles and their aluminum case, and I happen to have a case already, so I don't want to buy a complete rear end.  Try Team Z Motorsports

- Is there a preferred source for the front suspension components, given a drag race application?  Try Team Z Motorsports

- The class allows minor welding to the chassis for strengthening purposes.  Are there some points on the chassis that could or should be reinforced for a drag application?  Perhaps around the factory rear suspension arm mounting points?  Weld the upper torque boxes to the floor boards completly, and use battle boxes on the lower

Look into a spring that can store more energy.  Depending on your front end weight, you could probably use a 18" 225 or a 250lb spring.

3
What front springs are on the car?  Yes front shocks are important but the back of a stick car and getting control is super important.  What shock is on the car?

If you are serious about ringing out the et, a logger with the sensors are worth its weight in gold. This is what i use. https://www.rpmperf.com/store/p/basic-10-channel-data-logger.  It much more reasonably priced than a racepak, and does the same thing and is easy to use. I log fuel, oil, rpm, input shaft rpm, driveshaft rpm.  You will need to pull the trans to have the input shaft sensor put in.  With those gear ratios, you can definitely raise the launch rpm.  Experiment with tire pressure and get the best rear shocks you can buy.  Caltracs like 5 inches of front end travel too.

5
Whats the 1st gear ratio and what rear gears?  The fact that it pops the front up on shift indicates its tight.  Do you have an input shaft sensor?

6
Nice!  Do you have an adjustable clutch?  Seems tight.  Some ET there.

First full pass was 10.31, that’s a great first run, how was the air for that run? it should only get faster with fine tuning. Do you have the legal stuff to run 9’s? You might be knocking on the door. :)

Thanks, i dont remember exactly what the air was but it wasnt great for this area.  Once i get a handle on the suspension and clutch, you might be right.  I only have a 6 point bar. = )

Original iron.  .525 lift with tons of duration.  After deflection and lash, you arent left with much.

Thanks guys.  3640 puts me right in between a and b.  I wont be able to get to A weight unless i take out the bench seat which i really dont want to do.  So ill probably just add the 100 or so pounds and run B.

Diet consisted of removing radio, heater box and controls, aerospace brakes all around, trick wheels, 2.5 gallon fuel cell, no rear seat, glass hood of course,...not much else....lol

Any specs on that one as an NHRA stocker vs a Ford delivered version?

[/quote]

Filled block, thin rings, bbc rod journals, 20+ more duration, better valve springs, valve job, .013+ stroke, compression is just a tad over 15, 3 step headers......

I bought a POP roller bearing setup, and the plate was machined already to accept the bearings, still needed .004 taken off...

I picked up a reman duraspark, and locked out the timing.  Went to 7200 rpm on the dyno without a hitch.
