Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Calliope Engine Project
« on: January 05, 2024, 05:33:00 PM »
Jay, on one of several visits to my (late) friend Rick Kirk's place in Oklahoma (mid-late '80s) he related to me that he was once literally minutes away from acquiring one of the Calliope engines from one of his well connected Ford contacts.  According to Rick the gentleman got cold feet at the last minute but Rick did leave with a collection of Calliope engineering drawings, which he showed me.
My hat is off to you guys for what you are doing - too bad Rick is no longer with us to help you in your efforts.   Randy M

FE Technical Forum / Re: Duraspark, need a resistor or not?
« on: July 21, 2023, 07:49:45 PM »
Many years ago Mr Davis (of DUI Ignitions) wrote a tech article in one of the car mags about Duraspark conversions.  He claimed that running system voltage to the coil (no resistor) would overheat the control box to the eventual point of failure.  He recommended a 1.4 ohm resistor for "normal" driving but installing a toggle switch to bypass the resistor only when maximum ignition output was called for.
I have done this on several street/strip builds over the years and it seemed to work out fine - best of both worlds.

Joe, the last time I used 2291s I had to radius the intake valve reliefs to accommodate 2.09 valves.  Reliefs were deep enough for the .600 lift hyd roller cam, but valve timing events have to be taken into consideration as well when checking p/v clearance.  Randy M

Fabbed this FE crank trigger setup 40+ years ago - worked well.  Crude (by today's standards) but effective.  Randy M

Merc, are the new gen powdered iron "cracked" rods not rebuildable/resizable on their big end?  Randy M

Yes, what Greg said x 2:  for me it started about a year ago as well - site was down for a while (server crash?) and when it came back it was (and is) very slow to respond.  Randy M

FE Technical Forum / Re: Duraspark Wiring Question
« on: May 15, 2022, 09:00:42 AM »
Your module will trigger if polarity is reversed, but not properly and the engine won't like it.  I ran into this last year with a new "Standard Motor Products" pickup. I thought buying a recognized name brand would assure quality but the polarity was reversed when properly wired orange-to-orange and violet-to-violet.  You can check polarity with a DVOM.  Put it on volts and attach the leads to the pickup wires.  Turn the dizzy slowly in it's direction of travel and observe the readout.  If properly wired voltage will go from "+" to "-" as the trigger wheel passes the magnet.  If it goes "-" to "+" reverse the leads regardless of their color.
From now on it will be MotorCraft pickups and control boxes for me.  Randy M

I have Flowmaster 2-1/2" A body tailpipes on my '66 and they were an exact bolt-on.  Even my OE (dual exhaust) hangers worked after slightly elongating the muffler hangers to accommodate the 2-1/2" clamp.  I did have to add an extension to the back of each one, as the Gal has much more real estate behind the rear axle than does an A body GM.  Randy M

FE Technical Forum / Re: Pros and cons of sodium filled valves
« on: January 22, 2022, 05:47:41 PM »
I agree with JDC above:  I raced several m/riser combinations in the late '70s-early'80s with the hollow/sodium valves.  Was told by John V to keep the seat pressures down as the super light valve weights simply didn't need big seat pressure in order to control valve action (they ARE very light).  Never dropped a valve at 7200 through the traps, but I did spin my share of rod bearings until we went with 392 hemi journal size.
When I gathered parts for my cammer build (around '84) I scrounged a set of nos OE SOHC hollow/sodium valves.  John sent them out for Zyglo(?) imaging (like an xray) and they tested good.  Went with them and ran them on the street for 30 years.  Around 2015 I finally freshened the motor after collapsing a couple of OE piston skirts.  I replaced the valves with heavy-but-beautiful Ferrera units at that time and I've slept better ever since.  Randy M

I used a Tilton unit when I first built my SOHC around 1985.  It was pricey (not a lot of choices then) but I never had a problem with it and it's still in use today.  Randy M

Yeah Dumpling, topics do wander around a bit on the other forum but if one relaxes and rolls with it some pretty interesting threads develop from time to time.  Old guys riff'n often come up with some good stuff!  Gotta go, I'm told my cream of wheat is ready (lol).  Randy M

Nicely done!  Far too many FE oil leaks are blamed on rear main seal/cap leakage.  John V has been saying this forever and this is a perfect demonstration.  Randy M

I've had several sets of tunnel port heads over the years and they all had hardened exhaust seats.  Could this have been an OE feature of the t/port?  Randy M
