FE Technical Forum / Re: Eaton/Detroit TrueTrac Differential
« on: April 19, 2023, 06:43:18 PM »
Thanks for the replies everyone.  I like the price of the Yukon Grizzly locker but after running a locker for the past 30 years I was hoping for something with better street manners. I'm concerned with the Truetrac holding up at the drag strip, the Wavetrac on Summit has a ship date of 5/31 and the Strange S-Trac is a whopping $1,100.

Anyone have any experience with a TrueTrac differential? I'm looking to upgrade to 35 spline axles with a TrueTrac diff and am mostly concerned with how it will hold up at the drag strip for the handful of times I make it out to the track each year. I really like their street manners after driving a couple of different cars with them installed and that's why I'm leaning that way. 482, 5 speed (TKX) Fairlane.
Thanks, Joe S.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Tremec TKX vs Toploader with a Gear Vendor
« on: January 04, 2023, 06:03:45 PM »
Rory, the spacer was 5/8ths of an inch thick. I contemplated shortening the input shaft but combined with the Lakewood the spacer put the shifter in the factory location.  Clutch linkage remained stock but I had to get a small input clutch fork, the top loader was a big I/O.
No other modifications were needed for the tunnel and the factory mount does bolt up and mine came with a back up light switch. 2000 rpm's puts me at 60 mph with my gearing.
Funny thing though is that it's advertised as having all 5 carbon faced blocker rings but mine came with bronze faced blockers on first and second? The input shaft doesn't come out through the front like the 600.  Joe

Rory, I put a TKX in my '66 Fairlane. Close ratio with .68 5th. The car has a 4.11 rear with 275/60-15 tires. I wound up cutting the tunnel just behind the shifter and welding in a small bump up to get more clearance for the shift rail casting at the back of the transmission, the shifter stayed in the factory location with the Lakewood scatter shield and aluminum spacer.
The TKX trans mount is further back compared to the top loader and as a result the factory cross member would hit my X pipe. I fabbed up a new cross member rather than cut up the factory piece. Kept the factory clutch linkage and replaced the speedo drive gear with I think a 21 tooth gear and opposite rotation from the top loader gear.

The overdrive was a dramatic change from the old top loader on the highway! The shifter has a very positive feel to it, notchy until you put some heat into the transmission. After that it seems the faster you spin it the better it shifts. Oh and I had to have a new, longer, drive shaft made. Joe.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Front sway bar for 1966 Fairlane?
« on: October 20, 2021, 05:24:44 PM »
The bar showed up yesterday and I installed it this afternoon - fits well. Test drive tomorrow hopefully!

Jb427 - thanks for the tip on the reinforcement plates!

When I plugged in 1966 Fairlane on the Addco site the 715 bar didn't come up but found out later it is listed when you plug in 1967 Mustang/Cougar.

Thanks all for the replies!

Thanks for the offer but I wound up ordering a one inch bar from CJ Pony parts last night. Hope it fits!

FE Technical Forum / Front sway bar for 1966 Fairlane?

Looking for a front sway bar for my Fairlane but I'm finding conflicting information online as to which bar fits an FE. Does anyone know if the Addco 715 (one inch dia.) or Hellwig 6707 (1 1/8th inch dia.) bar fits a 1966 Fairlane with an FE? Thank you.

I used the Scott Drake C80Z-7515-B fork from Summit and it matches the big bearing fork exactly except of course for the width of the fork.

Here are some photos, I'm not sure if they're attached correctly. If not I'll email them to you.

If you do wind up going with shackles or different spring mounts be sure to check your pinion angle because it will change.

I just went through this with my '66, exchanged the back halves of the springs (Calvert customer service was great!) but still wasn't happy with the ride height. I wound up making some bolt on rear spring mounts and kept the factory shackles. The lip of the wheel opening sits at 24 inches with 275/60-15 tires.  Joe

Sorry to hear about your back but I do feel your pain. Just weighing my options right now, hopefully if things go according to plan I'll be in the market for a new set of heads in the Spring. Survival and BBM's are appealing since I could reuse my rockers as they are.

Not sure how to post a pic but I believe the Erson shafts have a smaller OD than stock Ford shafts since the rockers run on needle bearings so I'm concerned that milling the stands might lead to an increased chance of the shafts breaking.
Might be better off selling the Ersons and going with different set of rockers.
