the valve covers say thunderbird,not power by ford.i could not see any numbers at this time.i may go back and slide under it and look at the side of the block and check the numbers on the heads with a flashlight.only clue was the chrome covers and flat intake with a small roundish 4 bbl. its in a dark building with no lighting.

did any 66-67 428s come with chrome thunderbird valve covers.reason im asking is my friend has a wrecker that our fathers had when they were in the junk car business years ago.they went through several 390s over the years in the wrecker,but when they shut down my friend ended up with it.he said his dad put a 428 in it before retiring.i popped the hood on it yesterday but i could not tell much about it from a glance.but it did have chrome t-bird valve covers and a low flat intake with a small 4 bbl carb not a holley or autolite.

i took my 66 c6 stock converter out and put a 3500 in.if you lived in east tn i would let you come get it free.dont want to ship,but if you lived close enough you could come get it.

i dont know about the track,but i was using the stock lines with 6an fittings on my fuel cell.i run my car on the street.i noticed it was starving for fuel on a long high rpm road race.i went bigger on the lines and fittings.runs great now at high rpms.

 question, does a set of nos rods get fatigued just by sitting for 50 years.or would a nos rod or low mileage driven right rod be better than a set ran for many years that look good be just as good?

it may be something as simple as a modulator valve or line to modulator valve stopped up.unhook at both ends and blow through it,it may just be clogged.i have to blow mine out every now and then or it wont go into drive,but yours wont move at all so i dont know.

i thought from the start the valve covers might be part of your leak.that back corner is the worst spot for a hidden leak.i usually run my fingers along the bottom rail of the valve covers checking for leaks ever so often. sometimes its hard to see where its leaking at but if you wipe it clean under the lip of the valve covers,then come back after a pass or two and run your fingers under the lip again and you can pinpoint it better. my pro billet dist leaks a little too.i might try Brents tape idea next time i have the dist out.

are they low stress rods out of a low milage engine or have they been run hard before? i re-used a set out of a 66 428 with very low milage and driven right too.the crank did not need turning,even the block did not need bored.the rods were prepped and fitted with arp bolts.that is the only only way i would re-use factory rods.but if its a bracket only motor,i would go aftermarket

I had the same concerns, so I got a sheet of that heat reflective material (the kind with the real sticky backing).  Oil and filter change I screw the new filter up and see how it's going to clock with the header tube, mark the filter, then take it down and place a piece of heat barrier on the back half of the filter.  And since my headers cross under the pan I stuck a piece on the pan above the header tubes.  Might not being doing a dam thing but it gives me some piece of mind.
i put some medal behind mine too,and i also made one for the starter too.

i have used the same re-locator adapter for over 30 years because of header clearance problems.they work pretty good
