I just paid $600 for a pair of unmolested 4224s that needed rebuilding. Got excellent rebuild kit for both from Drew.

1963 2 door post, 300 series, R code 427. VIN 3853R138592. The car was raced from 1963 to 1968. Car supposedly predates the lightweight cars, has 6 cyl frame, no sound deadener, radio and heater delete, and according to Sol weighed 3550 lbs. Since Sol passed last month, this car is being offered to raise money for his wife Anns nursing home care. The car is an R code, does have a 427 but is not the original engine. Many original parts are missing, such as shifter, wheels, fan, radiator, transmission. Sol stated in a post on the FE forum that the car has a HM NASCAR 10 bolt top loader, which will have to be verified. A 427 short block is in the car, and iron heads are in the trunk along with a 2X4 intake manifold. I believe the mileage is
approximately 3500 miles. The car appears to be rust free and has been stored inside since 1970. The car is located near Jackson,Ala, about 60 miles north of Mobile.  Mac Henley is the contact person for the sale, questions, or to arrange a meeting to see the car. Macs cell number is 251-282-zero 33 two. Be advised that Mac lives 10 miles outside of Jackson and his cell service suffers depending on his location. Please leave a message and he will call you back ASAP. Sol has some posts regarding this car on the other FE forum that may provide additional information.

Thanks blykins, sure didn't think of air bleeds either. Don't have any but will check to see if he does. May have to pick some up beforehand. Good idea on temps as well. Its great to have this forum and access to the vast experience available here. Drag racing again after so many years is just as fun as ever but things have changed so much since the 60s 70s. I remember being happy to get 5 runs on a set of Autolites, today there are better ignition systems, carb/intake systems, tires, and equipment to help with tuning. Thank you for your input.

Thanks so much Jay and 6667fan, and everyone else, all comments help me to better understand what to expect. I feel pretty good about the tuner guy as he is an active racer and carb experienced from what I understand. I want the experience to mean something and will be prepared with jets and a couple spacers. I have a 1/2 in to 1/4 in wedge spacer on the carb now to level the carb, but also have a flat 1/2 inch spacer and a 2 inch spacer available, all three open. I do have a jet box to use. Right now Im running 33 total on the BBM heads and the new carb has 85 primary and 90 secondary jets. Ive reread the posts provided and really appreciate the insight. I will be running 100 VP. I do plan to purchase a good A/F ratio monitoring system but it wont be installed by the time I use the dyno. Im open to recommendations on the A/F system as it is in my plan for updates over the winter. Thanks again to everyone for all the assistance.

Thank you Joe, Royce and My427. Ive already read your posts numerous times to try and make sure I understand. Im glad you brought up about tuner being a carb guy. I talked to my buddy today whose taking his car as well, and he said the tuner guy not there Thursday as wife is having surgery but the computer guy is there. The tuner guy is a carb guy and apparently is actively running a dragster now. After reading your posts Im thinking we might better put off till Friday. I sure as hell cant make judgements on the data provided and apparently the computer guy is only that. If I do this I want to benefit not guess, soooooo, Im back to re reading your posts and will call tomorrow to try and postpone till Friday. thanks so much you guys.

FE Technical Forum / Dyno time...what to expect

I'm taking the Ranchero to a chassis dyno this week for the first time. Ive never been on a dyno before and am asking for guidance on what to expect and maybe some things to Do or Not Do. The car has been doing well but I cant seem to improve on 6.80, 1.50 60 ft, 100 mph. Ive recently changed the carb and have run with the new carb but the times are still 680s. What kind of A/F numbers should I be looking for and any other guidance is appreciated.
My engine data was posted on the Drag Strip results thread but Ill post again here.

445 cu in
Comp 306S solid lifter camshaft, stock rockers, Smith Bros pushrods
BBM heads by Blair
FE power intake adapter and Victor 351 Yates intake
4200 convertor
4:81 spool
current carb is a Gary Williams 1020

Any guidance is appreciated. Ill post the results of the Dyno pulls …

Thanks in advance

Haven't posted on this thread for a while, so thought I'd give an update. We've got at least three more races this season. The Ranchero is still running 6.80s. Ive recently installed a new carb and changed the rear shocks. I also got some lettering on the car after putting it off for so long. Im going this week to run the car on a chassis dyno. I'll start another thread on that as I have lots of questions about what to expect and any guidance on Do's and Don'ts. Ive never had a car on a dyno. My next race is Sept 6-7. Ill post some times afterwards...

FE Technical Forum / Re: Engine diapers for FE engines
« on: May 26, 2019, 12:56:08 PM »
Interesting thread. Being a newby,  not having raced since the 70s, some of the Gasser races I attend, started posting on their webpage/FB that a diaper would be required. I purchased the cheap Jegs strap style diaper. As mentioned, I could not install at all without complete tight contact between headers and oil pan. The material used appears to be the same material that is used to fabricate skydiving parachute containers (Im a parachute rigger and former skydiver) and without doubt, will burn and melt. I suppose that even with a burn hole the diaper would collect a majority of the oil that may be blown from the engine but the material also smells like its burning while its melting. As it turned out, none of the tracks so far are enforcing the diaper rule, but it seems to come up every time I travel to a new track. I think that only a custom made diaper for a rear or front sump oil pan made with fireproof material would actually work, and seeing as how the "HUGE" payouts for Outlaw gasser racing don't exist, Ill race till they tell me I can't...that's my plan and Im sticking to it....

Im going with 465 HP since CJ took the 468. Very interested in the outcome of the 390 build.

Wow Cody, huge improvement with the new "Blair" motor, almost a second. I have followed your truck ever since I started lurking this forum and your truck is what encouraged me to start running the Ranchero. Im 700 pounds lighter than you and my best to date is a 6.79, 1.49 60 ft. You got me worried now with your rear end failure. I just went to 31 spline, N case, Quick Performance chunk, 1350 yoke thinking Id be good forever. I don't have a transbrake and that may be the "failure" secret. As CJShaker mentioned, you need a poster of the recent launch pic. Regardless, please keep posting updates as Im sure theres more there and Im sure interested to see the even faster timeslips that I know are coming.
BTW, care to post any engine data? Cant believe you would still be running iron heads, but I believe Blair could make a shoebox work. Youre definitely making some power, maybe Werby can GONK that thing.

Thanks Werby. I have to admit, I never thought the power and torque would be that high. And, it seems installing a 5K convertor would be worth a solid .10th. I have to keep in mind that this is supposed to be a street car but damn Im having fun running the car. Im heading to North Ala this weekend for a memorial race for one of the gasser guys who passed away unexpectedly last month. I went to Mobile last month but only got one run in on test and tune on Friday night. Ran a 6.83. The next day, first run of the day, a blown FE Willys got all squirrelly thru the lights and a 406 FE powered 57 bounced off both walls on the next pass, same right lane. I was next in line but they closed the track, seems the track was breaking up in that right lane, so I never got another run. Im very happy with the new intake adapter from Jay and the Yates intake I got from Alan Casida. I cranked up the rev limiter per advice from Blair and have not had another missing issue.

Ive had some brake mushiness issues and have had difficulty staging the car. I changed the Master Cylinder to a bit smaller and got a good bleed on the brake system so Im hoping Ill be able to be able to stage with a little more grace this weekend. LOL

Thanks again Werby….Ill post some times from this weekend when I return....Love this website
