FE Technical Forum / Re: Help with cheater slick selection

Since you have a heavy car with a tall first gear, and not much rear axle ratio, if you really want the best performance with what you have, I would use a pair of short slicks, like MT ET Drag 8 1/2 x 26-15 slicks. The shorter tires will help with overall gearing, if you could find a pair of 5 lug 13" wheels, from an early Falcon, you could use 8 x 24 1/2-13 MT slicks, although such short tires would look rather goofy.
I had been thinking that way about it Rory428. If i go from 28” to 26” tire that would really help in my case my 3:50 gears would be changed to a 3:76 ratio

I run drag radials but I thought they were mostly for automatic cars. Once they loose traction its hard to get it back without getting off the gas.
I would think with a stick you would want a slick or if you do want to stick with a drag radial the pro series is more like a slick and the compound is softer.
Thata what I heard Stangman, once I get going my right foot stays planted and I just grab gears and have fun, so letting off the gas is not an option, LOL

FE Technical Forum / Help with cheater slick selection
« on: May 02, 2022, 09:04:45 AM »
There are 3 small town car shows within 80 miles of me that are including 150 foot main street drags now and rumor is more to come. I just run mine in one last week and no traction at all. I want to buy some slicks to play more. So i need some help to go to the 1/4 mile track once in a while and for these 150 ft hole shot drags.
My car is a 63.5 Galaxie 500 XL with 390, tripower, 406 shorty cast iron headers with 2 1/2” exhaust with dumps, 350 traction loc, 68 big in big out 4-speed toploader close ratio with 2:32 1st, 275-60-15 Cooper Cobra Tires and traction masters,
I realize people will say get ride of the close and change it to wide, but I actually like driving the close ratio.
Engine is 68 390, .060 over, H304P with 12cc dish, 21cc deck clearance with these pistons, 69cc 63 heads no head work done, .030 Cosemetic head gasketFord tripower, no work done, Comp 270S cam with 282S exhaust lobes, petronix lll curved distributor by Faron Rhodes,
I like the 3:50 gears to drive down the highway, 2550 rpm at 65 so probably will not change the rear gearing, and probably will keep the toploader the way it is although I did buy the 1 3/8” input, 2nd and 3rd gears and cluster wide ratio stuff a few years ago safely sleeping in a box on the shelf.
Not doing this for money, just like grabbing gears and having fun.
Which cheater slicks or whatever they are called and size of tire does anyone recommend?

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 flywheel
« on: February 11, 2021, 11:51:04 AM »
What is the difference between flywheel on a 410, 428, 428cj and a 428scj. Does the 428 SCJ take a different flywheel than the 410, 428 and the 428cj. I hear that the scj428 has a different Ford part number, C9ZE A,  than the others. I know you have to add the hatchet behind the harmonic balancer on the scj428 unlike the others but I thought the flywheels were the same

Is this question in response to my WTB ad on facebook?  Because we just went through this there if you are Carl?
Yes this is Carl, I posted this last night after I told you the other flywheel would work, before I knew you were going for a matching numbers flywheel. It got me curious as to what the difference was and I see by a couple responses the weight is different size. Which I think would not be good after the amount of money one could spend on getting an engine ready. Looks like Brent Lykins is going to get to the actual difference that there is which would be good to know, rather than just thrown any 428 flywheel on there.

Thanks TJ,
Have you drove it in the heat since you have been 1 to 1? I do have a tuff stuff 1421C water pump on mine.

FE Technical Forum / CVF Pulleys

Going to run dual alt belt on my street driven 63.5 390. I also have added Power steering and AC, so I need a couple of 3 groove pulley. Also I was looking a  I was looking at the CVF pulleys to purchase a 3 groove water pump and a 3 groove crank pulley. But they both only come in the 5.4" diameter. My pulley that I have for the FE are 6.5 on the crank pulley and 5.9 on the water pump pulley which gave it a 1.1 overdrive ratio, which are just some pulleys I found in some old parts I had but the are only 1 groove anyway. The crank pulley is the old original 390 harmonic balancer type with the integrated 3/8 pulley but I do not know what was on the water pump originally. Have no idea what was original on these cars 58 years ago. Also my Power steering, dual groove alt, and AC pulley are all 12mm as are the CVF pulleys.
Has anyone put 1 to 1 ratio for the water pump on their Street driven FE and had any cooling issues.
What ratio did Ford use on these back in the 60's?
I would like to get the combo right the 1st time rather that pull the fan and maybe radiator later to switch out the crank pulley.
so I am going to use two grooves of the water pump and crank pulley for the alt as I am running two belt on the 3G Alt. And then I am going to run the AC and PS belt together on the third groove of the water pump and Crank pulley

FE Technical Forum / Re: 1-wired alternator and V-belt squeal
« on: April 28, 2020, 07:05:38 PM »
Well, a little update to my scenario, which was referenced. I could not get even a Kevlar belt to last sufficiently, so I ultimately swapped to a dual v belt setup.

Since I also have AC and power steering on that truck, I went a little non-conventional. I ordered a set of triple pulleys for the crank and water pump from CVF. Two rows are dedicated to the alternator. The AC is driven from the 3rd row on the crank and the power steering is driven from the third row on the water pump.

With two belts providing the power to the water pump, I’m comfortable with using that as a drive for the power steering. Power steering doesn’t require high tension and it’s not working that hard most of the time. Works great, and I still have the look I want with the AC compressor mounted down low on the passenger side.

How did the same size pulleys on thr crank and waterpump work out get, any cooling issues?

Where can you find oversized screws for the adjustable or which aftermarket screw and locknut works for the stock adjustable rockers, 12 out of the 16 does not take anything to turn them.

I have one made by Tim Olereich that he used to sell on e-bay but I don't see it listed now.
His Email is: conceptdesigneng@aol.com, phone: 262-388-2509
This bolts to the head and works great.
I don't know if he still sells them or not but might be worthwhile to call or email him.

Gave Tim a call and I got one coming, Thank you for the phone number Gary and thanks to everyone else for chipping in with your post

FE Technical Forum / Valve spring tool on car

Anyone know of a good tool to replace valve spring on car for our rocker shaft type heads. I tried a search here but came up with nothing. I have dual spring and was going to leave the inner one out to break in cam.
