Yes Jay, that's correct.  And your heads too, lol. Hell, the original timing pointer was the only OEM Ford part on the engine.  Now that's gone.

IW has had this setup for quite awhile.  I've just never seen it used.

I saw this item at PRI this year and decided to get one.
The first picture is the original arrangement, which was fine.  The IW unit is pretty sweet though.  Needed a bit of massaging, but all good.

FE Engine Dyno Results / Re: 418 FE for GT40

I looked at doing a GT-40 build before I ended up doing a Cobra.  The problems with sourcing a transaxle that could survive behind a big block scared me off.  What are you using, Royce?

I'm one of the deviants doing a build with Jay's heads and a hydraulic roller, and I agree that it perhaps doesn't make a ton of sense from almost any perspective.  Except for coolness factor.  Honestly though, the motor I built back in 2003 has e-brock heads that were ported to within an inch of their lives by an outfit that doesn't post here...couple that godawful port velocity with a lousy cam choice, and you get a lazy, frustrating engine.  So Jay's heads, and especially his cross-ram intake gave me a great excuse for a do-over.

I've documented the entire build in pictures which I will post once I have the upper intake.  Jay did revise the lower intake to accommodate the slight but significant intake pushrod angle difference secondary to the higher pushrod cup of hydraulic rollers.  As always, Jay has been incredibly meticulous and responsive in resolving an issue that is unlikely to make up a large portion of his business.

And it fits perfectly.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Steve Morris Engines Cammer build.

I've enjoyed Steve's channel and his drag and drive engines sure are impressive.  However, there was an episode seven or eight months back where he introduced a bunch of new projects, including an Audi V10 and the cammer.  As soon as I saw the block sitting there and the word "cammer" came out of his mouth, my first thought was "this isn't going to end well" lol.  I also remember thinking that he is either one of the most well-versed engine builders on the planet, or that he had no freakin' idea what he was getting into.  Survey says...?

FE Technical Forum / Re: one wire alternator recommendation

I've had a one wire from PA Performance in my Cobra... I've replaced it twice in 8 years for heat related failure.  Cobras tend to have pretty high under hood temps, but that's kinda lame.  Definitely not using that particular unit on my new build.

Any of our FE vendors going this year?  I managed to snag a couple of credentials and am flying to Vegas on Tuesday.  I've never been and am pretty excited to check it out.

The topic of thread repair in aluminum has come up multiple times on this site and the other site... This video came out a few days ago on YouTube.  Very interesting and well done. Worth a watch.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Thrust bearing flange thickness and diameter
« on: November 28, 2021, 03:05:03 PM »
Thanks Brent.  I've never had issues with 125M bearings, but I was thinking of trying the Clevite MS1010 bearings because the .001 undersize are readily available but the 125M 1X .001 undersize are really hard to find anymore.

FE Technical Forum / Thrust bearing flange thickness and diameter
« on: November 28, 2021, 12:07:11 PM »
I think this has come up before, but I can't find it...

Is there a difference in thrust flange thickness and diameter (the part of the bearing that fits into the machined area in the main saddle) when comparing Sealed Power 125M (FE) and 146M (Cleveland)?  And how do those compare to Clevite MS1010HK (Cleveland) in terms of fitment?

Do certain thrust bearings need to be "massaged" more than others?

Thanks
Phil

I'm certainly no expert, but I find no evidence in the literature that the T70 ever had an FE... Do you have any documentation as to the provenance of this car?  Just curious.

I agree with Brent.  I run a single plate clutch in my Cobra behind a 482... The car is so light and traction limited, it's really all you need.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Warning against using ARP L19 rod bolts...
« on: August 24, 2021, 11:50:48 AM »
Just some follow-up on this topic... The Oliver 6.7" BBC rod (typical for an FE build that uses a crank with 2.2" rod journals) is C6700BBMX. These ship with L19 bolts.

Per Oliver technical support, the ARP 2000 replacement bolt is P/N BLT005 and the CA625 replacement is BLT003.

They are available factory direct or from Summit.
