Broader Performance just posted a video illustrating how Speedmaster is blatantly ripping him off. Video is about 20 minutes long. A good consumer heads up, and some points to consider considering the many other products they copy.

Please be respectful of Jay's forum with any "political" comments.

A bit of a warning for the language too, essentially for some who might be watching at work in the office.

We’ve posted a few of these old Ford promo films before, I can’t remember if I’ve seen this exact one. From 1954 and focusing on the Cleveland Foundry & Engine plant. Most of the film they are making 6 cylinders, but remember only about three years after this was made they were casting FE parts at the Cleveland plant. Always cool to see what goes into casting the blocks, etc. And some more good coverage of the large machine operation. Good coverage of the J-bar fixtures that move the engines around the plant as they are built & tested. Those J-bar fixtures are the primary reason for those two holes at the bottom passenger side pan rail of every FE engine, they are also on every Y-Block.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Old Ford film on building the Model A engine
« on: October 28, 2022, 07:29:58 AM »
We’ve seen some of these old Ford films before, here’s an interesting 10 minute one on how the Model A Engine was made. Lots of coverage of casting the blocks, forging the cranks, assembly, etc. I always find these interesting, but they also give you a good idea how grueling the work was. And the shots where the camera pulls back and shows how massive the operation was. Unfortunately there’s no narration, but still fascinating.

Spotted this on Facebook, just passing on the info. The Edelbrock 351C Torker intake pairs well with a FE Power intake adapter of course. J&J Restoration is in North Dakota. All their contact info is in the second screenshot.

*Facebook post this morning says the intake has been sold.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Broken small block Ford Scat crankshaft
« on: October 12, 2021, 08:26:38 PM »
My racing buddy Brad M. drag races a 1967 Mustang with a Ford 351W based stroker. It’s a Dart block with AFR heads, and uses a Scat 4.100” forged crankshaft with a ATI balancer. It makes about 705-714 HP, depending on carb used. The car weighs just under 3000 lbs and runs in the 9.60’s to 9.80’s and uses an aftermarket PG automatic. The engine was originally first built and run in 2016, and freshened up in 2019. Earlier this summer he was on a pass when the car made a big bang around the 300’ mark, and he shut it down as quickly as he could. They towed it off the track, and were checking it over in the pits trying to figure out what happened, checking the usual stuff, like for a sheared distributor gear pin, etc., and not really finding anything. Then they noticed the harmonic balancer was hanging down at an angle! Brad brought the car home after the weekend, and we pulled the engine soon after. Inspection showed the crankshaft had indeed broken right in front of the first main journal. Unfortunately right at the lower crank timing gear, which stoped the timing chain & camshaft. How the balancer basically stayed in place by only the crank seal, and didn’t go bouncing down the track is amazing. We brought the engine into the builder, and the full tear down and inspection showed the only damage done was the broken crankshaft, and all the valves had been tagged & bent, with some valve guide damage too. The engine has been rebuilt, with a new Scat crank, new AFR valves, and the ATI balancer rebuilt, etc., and today we stopped out at the builder and dropped off the headers & misc parts for the upcoming dyno session. I took some pictures of the broken crankshaft, and thought the group here might be interested in what it looks like. Certainly a strange failure, and hopefully a fluke. I know a few of you do failure analysis, feel free to weigh in if you see anything. The only thing that bolts on in front of the harmonic balancer is a pulley for the alternator belt, and a mandrel & pulley for the vacuum pump. Here’s some pictures:

Our members Hemi Joel & JericoGTX Jeff are back this year with Joel’s Hemi powered ‘31 Plymouth Coupe. And I believe our member Scott Miller is there with his FE Powered Cougar. Any one else? It’s starting and ending at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park this year. Here’s a link to the live feed just getting under way:

These are from the estate of a local Minnesota Ford guy. Jeff Colvert confirmed he did the CNC work on these Pro Port heads for Kurt, they were finish ported and assembled locally by Bryan at R&R Performance in Spring Lake Park MN. Never used. Jeff Colvert called them his “Pro Nostalgia” version. They were flowed at R&R and the results at .800” lift were 365 intake and 272 exhaust. Bryan at R&R should have the full flow test results. They come assembled with valves & springs. $6,000 pair. $5000 pair ** SOLD ** Please contact Ron at Twin Cities Auctions for more info and to purchase. I can add more pictures if someone wants. Thanks.

*** Edit to add: a couple people have asked about valve sizes, a quick measurement with a caliper shows 2.25” on the intakes and 1.73” on the exhausts, approximately. ***

Vendor Classifieds / Large Ford parts sale in Minnesota
« on: September 27, 2020, 02:31:18 PM »
There will be a large Ford parts sale in Roseville Minnesota starting next weekend Oct 3rd-Oct 6th. The majority of the parts are from the estate of our local Ford friend Kurt Gartner, but also includes parts & cars belonging to Ron C. who is hosting the sale. The vast majority of Kurts parts were for FE’s, but there is some good 429-460 stuff there, and a bit of Small Block Ford, etc. Also some general performance parts & engine builder tools. If you go to the Twin Cities Auctions website there is a link to the parts list. Be advised parts are still being added to the inventory list, so keep checking back. They will also email you a copy if you want. I’m helping tag parts, if you have any questions here I can try my best to answer them, or check with Twin Cities Auctions. Just to be clear, this is a “garage sale”, not an auction, the intention is for everything to be priced by sale time. Thanks.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / New Y-Block speed record
« on: August 14, 2020, 06:24:57 AM »
On Sunday Timmy McMaster ( Y-Block Guy ) went 192.365 mph with his 304 C.I. Y-Block powered D/GR roadster at Bonneville. He had hoped to try for 200 mph on a later run, but on that pass, right after letting off at the 3 mile mark and running about 180 mph, he ran over a header collector tube accidentally dropped on the course by a previous competitor, which damaged the rear suspension and blew the right rear tire. That ended his weekend. My sources tell me that probably gives him the bragging rights to the Worlds Fastest Y-Block. In past years many here probably know he ran a Y-Block powered Ford Pickup at Bonneville.

Also this past weekend the Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop Ran 193 mph with their MEL powered roadster, which runs a different class than Timmy McMaster. They were also looking to try for 200, but it sounds like they had engine problems and are done for the year.

A couple of great accomplishments.

I was doing some reading and research on the Ford Cleveland Foundry and engine plants tonight, and came across this article written by a woman who’s father was a long time worker at the plant, and worked there herself for a short time. In the article is a cool 25 minute Ford promotional video of the then new Foundry and engine plant. They were making 6 cylinders at the time, and mention and show how they will be adding the new OHC Lincoln Y-Block in the near future. The video is really detailed on the casting process, starting right with mixing the sand, and nice views of the cores being made and assembled. We’ve seen some of the Rouge videos before, but this was the first Cleveland plant one I’ve seen. It’s amazing what it takes to cast and assemble thousands of engines a day. In just a few years after this was filmed the Cleveland Foundry would be casting FE blocks and parts, and I presume assembling them too. Be sure and read though Sally’s story, you’ll catch some pretty cool exotic Ford & FE trivia too. Here’s the link:

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Hot Rod Drag Week 2019 is ( kind of ) underway.
« on: September 09, 2019, 10:00:24 AM »
Hot Rod Drag Week 2019 has started, however it has been raining all morning so far. Sounds like they may make the determination whether day 1 will be a rainout soon. Reports I saw on Facebook yesterday made it sound like registration day went well yesterday, and there was a test & tune session in the afternoon. It was also announced that everyone who was on the waitlist and showed up got registered. The unofficial count I saw yesterday was 351 competitors registered yesterday, so the event did not fill up, and if true that will be a lower count than the last few years. Hot Rod will probably announce the official count today. There is a live feed each day, you can access from the Motor Trend On Demand website, and people have said you can access from the Motor Trend channel on YouTube also. I have the website link below. So far it has just been Brian Lohnes & David Freiburger talking and filling time with some good car chat and racer in need announcements. Everyone feel free to add anything to this post you want. I saw a post today that Scott Miller is there with his FE powered ‘68 Cougar.

Recently Roadkill bought a ‘64 Galaxie out of the Desert Valley Auto Parts salvage yard in the Phoenix Arizona area for their latest project. Now they’re looking to buy a running FE for it. Like quickly lol. I just saw this post from Finnegan tonight. Here’s somebody’s chance to be famous, maybe get on the show.

I saw a heads up on Facebook today, Holley has the 660 Center Squirters for sale cheap on the Holley website right now. I know a few people were concerned last time it looked like they discontinued them, then they came back, who knows this time. Anyway, excellent price.

The Engine Masters winning MEL of our forum member Royce B. & Jon Kasse is featured on the cover of the new March 2019 Hot Rod. One sharp and stout looking engine! Also inside in the Engine Masters coverage are pictures and specs of the entries of forum members Joe Craine ( Y-Block ) & Barry Robotnick ( FE ). Way to go! There was discussion of these engines on the forum last fall. We were privileged to have Royce in the FE Power booth at PRI last month, answering questions for his fans.
