Non-FE Discussion Forum / 302--Which Camshaft?
« on: March 31, 2023, 08:15:25 PM »
Hey guys. Picked up a low use rebuilt 302 and pulled it down for inspection. Right now, it has a Performer cam installed and the lifters all look great.
It's the 204/214 @.050 112 LSA grind. I have a cherry 351 Windsor marine cam that specs out around 206 or 210/220 @.050 and 115 or so LSA. I'm vague on the specs because I'm unable to nail down true, 100% factual specs as it seems no one on the net knows for sure, but I do see the 206/220 number and 115.5 LSA come up fairly often.
The lifts on both cams are comparable at mid .400s. The 351 also has the 351 firing order, naturally.
Ford Racing had one listed as 208/224 .453 lift years ago, maybe that's it?
Would one of these cams have an advantage over the other, or would it be kind of a wash, being they are fairly close in specs.

308 cubic inch, performer intake, GT40 heads, headers.
4000 lb. pick-up, daily driver, C6 auto, 308 gears.

As always, thanks for any input.

FE Technical Forum / Fox Body FE Swap Guide
« on: March 15, 2023, 07:01:41 PM »
Jays thread got me to thinking that maybe it would be nice to have any information regarding a Fox body FE engine swap all in one place. I don't believe such a thread exists, or I haven't been able to locate it.
I know Rory has contributed many times to different threads through the years, but his information kind of gets lost when those posts die off.
So, if you have any experience performing this swap, or any information at all pertinent to this swap, please post up in this thread.

A few questions I have:
Have you run a Toploader 4-speed in this application? What pedals and clutch linkage did you use? Does a stock FE bell housing work?
Any valve cover interference with the stock Fox brake booster assembly when running tall aluminum pieces?
Cooling problems?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 460 Stroker Camshaft Question
« on: October 16, 2022, 07:57:59 AM »
Hey guys. I'm assembling a 532" stroker for my '74 Cougar and was curious if this cam would work decent in this application. If not, why?

Application: Ford big block 385 Series 429-460ci V8.Cam Style: Mechanical flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 3,600-7,000
Duration at 050 inch Lif 246 int./256 exh.
Advertised Duration: 282 int./292 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.563 int./0.583 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 108
Intake Valve Lash: 0.026 in.
Exhaust Valve Lash: 0.026 in.
Computer-Controlled Compatible: No
Grind Number: F-246/3294-2-8
Valve Springs Required: Yes
Quantity: Sold individually.
Notes: Also fits 370 c.i.d. engines. 10.5 to 12.0 compression ratio advised.

Events @.050 In. 20/46 Ex. 61/15

Build specs.:
Pump gas.
9.7:1 compression.
Factory early D0VE-C heads with full port work and 2.20/1.71 valves. Ported and built by Scott Johnston.
Not sure on intake yet but most likely either a Ford Racing G 429 (Performer RPM) or a Torker II.
950 CFM Holley derivative.
Hooker Super Comp 1 7/8 headers.

C6 transmission. Torque convertor stall not yet determined. Rear gear not determined.
This will be a fun street car. Want a flexible engine, not a high RPM screamer, just a nice, usable performance engine.

I had this very cam in a 466 years ago in a daily driver truck. Probably only 9:1 compression but man, the thing ran great. As I recall, I had advanced it 4 degrees in that application.

Thanks guys!

I've been following this gentlemans channel for some time. It started as a joke but has morphed into something a little more serious. Pretty fascinating.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Street Compression for 4V Cleveland
« on: April 20, 2022, 11:44:04 AM »
4V closed chamber heads. What would you guys recommend to be the highest compression ratio for 91 pump gas? 9.5 or so?
The Cleveland forums seem to be kind of slow so that's why I ask here.
I know some of you guys play with the C as well as the FE.

Thanks.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 351C 2V Pinging--How to Stop It?
« on: March 07, 2022, 08:43:51 AM »
Have an excellent running 2V Cleveland in a 1970 Cougar I recently acquired but it pings under a load pretty badly.
I have always heard these engines with the open chamber heads were detonation prone and from having owned a 1974 Montego with a bone stock 2V Cleveland that pinged under a load and now this one, I would tend to agree. When I say under a load, I'm not talking wide open, just partial throttle climbing a moderate hill.
Now, short of swapping heads in favor of the Aussie heads, 4V closed chamber or running race gas, is there any way to remedy this situation? Would polishing the chambers help?

This engine I have now has a Holley 750 vacuum secondary carb., Holley Street Master intake, long tube headers with dual exhaust out the back. The mufflers are very quiet chamber style.
It needed a fuel pump so when I removed it, I could see and feel the timing chain was worn out. So, replaced that as well, and when doing it, removed the pan to make removing the timing cover easier. While the pan was off, replaced the oil pump and pick-up with new Melling stuff, standard volume and pressure.

The bottom end looked stock. The timing set was the factory nylon deal so I believe the cam is stock. it idles very smooth.

Haven't checked the timing yet because my timing light is at work. Will do that in the next day or so. Have the distributor mounting soaking with PB blaster as it's stuck.

FE Technical Forum / Fuel Efficient Build---352 or 351W
« on: March 03, 2022, 06:13:17 AM »
Okay guys, another fuel economy question for you regarding a couple engines.
If you had your choice, which engine would be a better candidate for a fuel-efficient build, a 352 or 351 Windsor?
Given the current situation around us now has me thinking more about MPG than HP.
Would still like to have good torque and a throttle responsive engine, only focus more on efficiency.
Factory cylinder heads, pump gas, backed by a C6 in a 4000lb truck. Will be using an aftermarket throttle body EFI system.
I do have one of those overdrive Top Loaders that came in late '70s trucks I could install, if it would be worth the trouble.

As always, any input greatly appreciated.

FE Technical Forum / 410 vs 428 Power Difference
« on: December 30, 2021, 09:18:59 AM »
Maybe I missed it or don't remember if this has been addressed but, all things being equal in the build (heads, intake, camshaft, compression etc.) would there be any measurable power/torque advantage with the extra 18 cubic inches of the 428 over the 410? Would it even be noticeable in a street vehicle?

Must be winter time, what with the rhetorical questions and all.  ;D

Thanks guys.

Hey guys. Manual transmission. Without having them both side by side, how do you tell a car from a truck bell housing?

Thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Final Decision Time--410 or Cleveland?
« on: March 28, 2021, 07:45:32 AM »
As a lot of you well know by now, I have 2 rigs I'm building 2 engines for--a 1989 F-150 2wd short bed auto and a 1967 Cougar 4-speed. Engines are 410 FE and 4V 351 Cleveland.
It's now time to make a final decision on which engine to put in which vehicle.
I'm starting to assemble the 410 so, depending on which rig it goes into, will determine the final configuration.

So guys, which vehicle should get which engine? Why would you install it in that vehicle?

I know you guys are probably tired of seeing my posts on this subject. I won't post anymore after this. I promise. I don't have a problem. I can stop any time I want!  ;D

Thanks again.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 351C 4V Truck Header?
« on: March 03, 2021, 09:10:48 AM »
Gentlemen, are any of you aware of a 4V 351 Cleveland header that could be used in a 2wd pick-up application? Late '80s truck specifically but I think the '70s model trucks are similar.
