FE Technical Forum / What story do my plugs tell?
« on: March 13, 2020, 08:41:43 AM »
Here are the FR4 plugs. I think Barry R recommended them. I noted that many didn't like the RC12YC plugs recommend by Edelbrock.
With that said, I think the heat range is a little hot. I'll let those that do this regularly opine on what changes need to be made. It does smell and seem a bit rich and I smell some fuel while driving.  Thank you. Keith

FE Technical Forum / Plug change. Heat range too hot?
« on: March 13, 2020, 02:50:22 AM »
I have been running FR4 plugs with the Edelbrocks heads. The Edelbrock recommended plug is a Champion RC12YC.  I have never had a Champion plug I liked and I saw many of them being returned due to failure in vehicles.  Two plugs were recommended here. One is the NGK FR4, the other BKR6E.  Remember, this is a factory dual quad car that is street driven with the occasional "blast".  There is some soot on the body, which I am a bit rich but much I see a lot of gray on the electrode and ground. I had a set of BKR6E in my cabinet. Any reason not to run them?
Is there another recommendation?  I might add that I am also running the Pertronix II and matching coil. Direct 12V power source to the module as instructed. The compression ratio is about 9.8:1.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

FE Technical Forum / D4TE 105 blocks. Distributor bushing?
« on: March 11, 2020, 10:47:35 PM »
I am trying to get clarification. Understand the true FT blocks have a compressor drain back to the block. Is that how the blocks are identified that need the distributor? It wasn't measured previously to assembly.

FE Technical Forum / Oil Pressure.
« on: March 08, 2020, 03:49:11 PM »
I maintain about 18-20 PSI at Idle ( 900 RPM) and about 55-65 at 3500 RPM hot.  I changed to Valvoline VR10-30. Does that sound about right?

FE Technical Forum / Adjusting Top Loader Shifter Linkage.
« on: March 07, 2020, 08:57:06 AM »
I made the tool to lock the shifter. However, Ford didn't spell out the procedure. I assumed what needed to be done is all three levers should be in neutral. The shifter locked in neutral and the rod nuts tightened. Did I miss anything?

I have been doing primarily street driving. I have started doing short freeway runs. Being it turns 3500 at 70, I haven't taken it on a long trip.
I have been noting that when I come off the freeway and hit a few lights that the temperature starts running about 20% higher on the gauge for about 20 minutes post exiting. Is there a reason for this?

Many of you will remember Velvatouch? I think that was the manufacture. I am looking for brake shoes that are 1.090 X 2.5" with a semi-metallic liner.
My Shelby has  63-66 Thunderbird rear drum brakes with few options even for quality replacements.
Does anyone know who might reline shoes with performance linings?

FE Technical Forum / Dipstick Raises up out of Tube.
« on: January 25, 2020, 01:54:56 AM »
I have been having an issue with the dipstick being pushed up about an inch. There isn't a blow-by issue.  Sometimes I have to rotate the dipstick to get it all the way down.  I thought perhaps it's getting hung up on the windage tray?
I have a PCV valve that is vented from the right rear intake boss ( C7ZX 427 MR intake)
I thought perhaps others may have encountered this in their travels.

Private Classifieds / 24" Mustang Radiator "Stringer"
« on: November 07, 2019, 09:14:55 PM »
I had a fan clutch fail and damage the radiator. For lack of better terms the wire that runs horizontal across the core is what I need. One was bent.

I was hoping someone would have a junk core with a good wire.  This is for the Mustang 24" FE or SB with A/C.

FE Technical Forum / Toploader counter shaft leak fixes?
« on: October 18, 2019, 07:30:29 AM »
I rebuilt my Toploader. The kit came with a new shaft and of course I used it. However, I noted some gear oil on the inspection cover and along the bottom side of the case. It's also getting on my coated headers.
Is there a way to seal the front side without removing the trans or pulling it completely out of the vehicle that anyone could recommend?

FE Technical Forum / Okay, I decided to try VR1. Looking at what to run.
« on: October 14, 2019, 12:58:00 AM »
I have 220 miles on the new engine. I was considering running Brad Penn. However, most of their multi-viscosity offerings are partial synthetic.  I think it's a bit early to convert to a synthetic.  I bought straight 40WT VR1 being I really didn't want to spend 12.00 a quart on the Penn offering.   Any reason to be concerned with that choice?

FE Technical Forum / Hot running engine.... Seems to be resolved.
« on: October 10, 2019, 12:36:13 AM »
After a few bugs I think much has been worked out.  I had a new Mr. Gasket 180 degree thermostat stick in the open position. I replaced it with a Robert Shaw 180. Immediate change in temperatures, but still running warmer than it was previously.
The alternator is a dual belt unit. When I put the new Marti belts on they have the Ford white ink printed numbers on them. I lined up the printed information on both belts when they were installed. When I checked the under the hood post my drive with the new thermostat I noted the belts were no longer lined up. That was proof that the belts were slipping.  The NOS ford temperature sending unit had arrived as well.
I loosened the alternator back up, lined up the belts and made sure to use a pry bar to apply more tension on the belts.

I removed the distributor cap, sat it on top of the front carburetor  and pushed a rag in around the distributor to retain any coolant that may come out of the intake when I removed the temperature sender to replace with the NOS Ford. I noted a huge amount of air was vented and very little coolant. Of course I was quick trying to keep down the mess.
I didn't loose enough to justify adding coolant. I went for a 15 mile drive. The vehicle ran at about 1/4-3/8 of the gauge the entire time.

My presumption would be that there was air in the cross over in the intake to the heads and that the belts were slipping under load which would have impaired water pump and alternator function.

Hopefully this will address the hot running engine.

FE Technical Forum / Run in and hot engine solved..
« on: October 05, 2019, 11:53:46 PM »
As mentioned in the other thread I knew the top tank shouldn't feel warm as soon as I lit it and got it running.
I decided to inspect the thermostat. It was closed when installed.
It was stuck open by the internal seal. The old and new thermostat. The one stuck open cold is the Mr. Gasket Chinesium copy of the Robert Shaw thermostat.

FE Technical Forum / The New Engine runs at higher temps 3/4 Gauge.
« on: October 04, 2019, 04:53:42 PM »
I put 20 miles on the Shelby's new engine last night. The other engine had C6AE-R with about 11:1 compression. The Edelbrock  heads and JE inverted dome pistons have me at about 9.9:1 compression.  I have the Edelbrock water pump as I did before and a ford factory radiator with a heavy duty three core. I am running the factory fan, shroud and and clutch.
I have changed to Edelbrocks, but everything else pretty much remains the same.  The other engine seemed to be a constant at about 1/2 gauge or just below.  It seems to come up to temperature much faster as well  I have the high flow Mr. Gasket Thermostat that looks like the Robert Shaw.
It is also supposed to be a high flow. I did accidently drop it during assembly. It didn't appear to have damage. Are is the Mr. Gasket a decent unit, or are they Chinesium garbage that tends to fail?

FE Technical Forum / Cam and engine run in today.
« on: October 02, 2019, 06:17:52 AM »
I ran the cam in with the outer springs and reinstalled the inner and ran it for another 20 minutes at 2200 rpm.  First time I have ever seen headers glow. First time I've ever noted them glowing.  Engine was quiet and very smooth. Plugs are a nice tan. No oil and the little bit of smoke went away after the 20 minutes. I am going to have to get the timing dialed in. I ran it in with about 10 degrees initial timing. I also had a vacuum nipple that came off the fitting on the back of the intake. I thought it may have caused the engine to lean out a bit.
I am gone for three days as of tomorrow so I am going to try and get the hood back on and the export brace and do a little bit of fine tuning.
