FE Technical Forum / Coil Mount Location
« on: December 18, 2020, 10:32:26 PM »
I have a 428 in my '76 high boy and the coil is mounted on top of the A/C compressor.   this doesn't look right .  is this correct ?  if not where should it mount ?

I want it to look as original as possible.

FE Technical Forum / FE Exhaust Manifolds For The F Series
« on: July 28, 2020, 11:29:01 PM »
I have headers on my '76 high boy with a 428 in it.  I'd really like to put manifolds on it but I'm not sure if I have any options beyond the stock log style.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the CJ manifolds will  work ?  that would be my preference but from what I see I doubt they'd fit.    then there is the style with the fins , or ribs that supposedly fit pickups but I can't verify.

I don't think there are any other options but I'd like to know if there are.

FE Technical Forum / 390 Heads On A 360 ?
« on: September 04, 2019, 08:51:00 AM »
Listings show heads for 390's up but don't show they fit a 360.    is there any reason a 390 head won't work on a 360 ?

FE Technical Forum / Holley Secondaries Sticking
« on: June 23, 2019, 03:17:44 PM »
Been driving the new 428 a bit here lately and until now everything has been text book perfect.

Now that it has about 500 miles on it I decided to run it a little harder and when I got home I couldn't get it to idle under 2k.  so I pulled the air cleaner of and checked everything out and found the secondaries  had stuck open a little . I couldn't push them back without working them open a little more then they fell back in place.   I tried to get them to stick again by hand but so far they haven't.

This is a brand new vacuum secondary 4160  .   any ideas on what caused this and how I can prevent it again?

FE Technical Forum / 390 Strange Symptoms
« on: March 28, 2019, 04:39:29 PM »
Helping a friend try to figure out what's going on with his 390.

It's a fresh rebuild with about 500 miles on it.  everything was done right as far as we know, new everything and a pretty stock build. flat tappet RV cam.  new Holley 600.  new control module.

Ever since t was fired up it's had a bit of a vibration, under acceleration it almost feels like a miss to me.   other than that it starts and runs just fine.

We rechecked the firing order and pulled all the plugs.  # 1 was black,  soot not oil.  #7 was white.  the rest look normal.

Put new plugs in it and  nothing changed.  all plugs are getting good spark.

Any ideas?

FE Technical Forum / Temp Sending Unit Sealer ?
« on: January 22, 2019, 06:28:07 PM »
My temp gauge worked before I rebuilt my engine, ever since it hasn't. I grounded the wire out and the gauge climbs right up.

I reused the sending unit so the only thing that's changed is I wrapped it in Teflon tape before I reinstalled it.   could this be my problem ?   I'm going to put a new sending unit it in but if the Teflon is the problem I don't want to drain it and do it again.   if so what should I use in it's place ?

FE Technical Forum / Ram Clutches ?
« on: January 10, 2019, 05:15:04 PM »
Nice out today  I took my new 428 in my '76 high boy for a test run and seat the rings a little.   everything went text book perfect except my clutch won't hold it.   it slips bad and it's almost new.

So in looking I find the CF dual friction which I know will hold it and a Ram  long style that says it will.   I like the dual friction in my Challenger but it's not super user friendly like I'd prefer in a pick up.  also there is some question if a diaphragm will fit in the cast steel bell housing.

Anyone try a Ram clutch and what did you think ?

FE Technical Forum / Grease The Transmission Yoke ?
« on: December 26, 2018, 08:13:26 PM »
Sometimes I grease the throw out yoke and sometimes I don't.  I really can't see a difference either way but I've never been sure what the best answer is.  I wonder if the chance of making it sticky is worse than what little wear you are going to get ?  getting ready to do it again so I was curious.

FE Technical Forum / FE Pickup Engine Mounts
« on: December 24, 2018, 06:27:08 PM »
Does anyone know the correct motor mount orientation for a pickup ?   there are just 2 vertical bolts and it can go either way.  one way will move the engine about 1 1/2" farther forward than the other.   it wouldn't be a big deal to reverse them but I won't know until I'm trying to install the rear crossmember and by then it will be a PITA.

The only noticable things I can say id the hole on the frame perch is a tear drop shape, and above   ( or below depending ) the bolt on the mount is a bump.   seems that bump would go in the wide part of the tear drop ?

The other thing that may matter is there is metal above and below the pad on the mount backing. and there is a metal  rail on one side, either front or back depending on how it's installed.

This is a '76 Highboy if it matters.

FE Technical Forum / Carb Choices
« on: December 15, 2018, 07:26:41 PM »
In the process of getting my 428 back together.   it came with a perfectly tuned Edelbrock  that runs great but I run a Holley on everything.

I have a brand new 770 Truck Avenger I got somewhere.  would this be too much for a street 428 with 10-1 compression ,  a mild roller cam and pretty much stock otherwise.  this is in a '76 high boy with a 4spd.   I think I'd be better off with a 650 but if this would work I have it.

FE Technical Forum / Cam Bearing Debacle
« on: December 15, 2018, 05:06:49 PM »

so I got my 428 back from the machine shop and they screwed up on the cam bearings.  the front one is fine, the rest have the oil slot at about the 5:00 o clock position and they're going to get zero oil.

I assume this oil hole is supposed to be at 6:00 to line up with the hole to the main bearing ?

If I am correct I can have them pick it up in 2 weeks and hopefully get it back 2 weeks after that.   or,  can I just drill a hole down the oil passage through the bearing and go with it ?

I'm a little shocked by this , this machine shop is the go to one for most of the state. and at 160 miles away the closet one to me.  I've never had them screw up before but this is pretty sorry.

FE Technical Forum / Cam Drive Pin
« on: December 14, 2018, 11:52:26 AM »
I seem to have lost my cam pin.  the book says it's a 5/16 x 1 1/2 "  dowel pin.    is this a simple dowel pin I can get at a parts store or is it special ?

I seem to recall it being solid but it's been so long I can't remember.  and the hole measures 5/16 so I don't think I can make one from a bolt.

FE Technical Forum / Blocking Off Exhaust Crossover
« on: December 14, 2018, 12:43:16 AM »
On Mopars you can get a block off intake pan.  is there any reason on an FE I can't make metal block off plates for the crossover ?

My main concern would be will the heat destroy the fiber gasket around it ?   if so is there another way.

FE Technical Forum / Lowering Compression
« on: November 30, 2018, 01:05:49 AM »
What started as a light rebuild just keeps getting heavier.

My 428 has low miles and a great bore but I find it has TRW pistons  ( that look like new )  with my heads should be in the 10.2 to 1 range.  with a little machine work it's probably a little higher than that.

Since it's in a 4x4 pickup I'm not after top performance I just want a street engine.  though it's been working fine on pump gas with the timing backed off a bit I'd really like to lower it .  so I'm looking at Cometic gaskets .  I know putting the pistons down in the hole isn't an ideal situation but it's sure the easy fix.

So to get to say 9.5 to 1 what would I need ? I think stock is .40  and they list a .60 and a 80 which would I need ?.   or is this just a bad idea  ?  leaving it alone is an option.

FE Technical Forum / Cam Degreeing
« on: November 28, 2018, 11:20:31 PM »
I've been rebuilding my own  engines for  35 years, with excellent success.   but I must admit degreeing a cam is not a clear science to me and I'm intimidated by it.   I have the tools to do it but I'm so unsure of my results I always default back to the standard bosses and forget it.

So I have a couple questions on the 428 in my highboy I'm freshening up.   first, my timing set says + 4 degrees, - 4 degrees or standard.   but the keyways  are WAY more than 4 degrees on the circle,  even if you account for the cam turning half speed .  or at least so it seems, how can this be ?

Second, I have more compression than I'd like, and my new hydraulic roller cam is a little more cam than I'd prefer,   if I retarded it the 4 degrees would that help or hurt me ?  I don't care about  enhanced performance I just want a good running engine.
