FE Technical Forum / NW Machine shops
« on: March 08, 2023, 11:16:18 PM »
Anyone have a recommendation for a machine shop in Washington? Or anywhere in the PNW for that matter. Of the 2 shops I've been using one is backed up until June at least, and the other guy just retired and isn't taking any new jobs. The other shops around here I've stopped to talk with over the last couple years, looked at their work and after that experience wouldn't let them work on my Briggs&Scrapiron. Hoping someone has experience with a shop that can do something besides a SBC (be nice if they had a dyno too since that shop also closed). Thanks.

Good Deals! / POP and others
« on: April 27, 2020, 06:12:04 PM »
I have to say it's rare in this day and age that not only is this forum extremely helpful without most of the usual interwebs nonsense, but that everyone on here has been excellent to deal with. So far I have not had a single bad experience.

Late last week I ordered some parts from POP at about 3am and screwed up the order. Most vendors would just have shipped whatever came up on the order, but I got a phone call letting me know I screwed up and confirming what I really wanted shipped (I did not really need enough center stands to do more than 2 heads......).

Similar experiences with all the other vendors and individuals I've done business with here and it sure is a nice change from the average modern buying experience.

FE Technical Forum / Small Bore head gaskets
« on: June 13, 2019, 12:02:30 AM »
Has anyone used the composite "pro seal" SCE head gasket on FE's? They offer a small bore version that's 4.175 with a compressed thickness of .040. I have not used SCE composite gaskets before, but it looks like a good option for a mild build if the gaskets are half way decent.

It's a long story, but the short version is I'm helping an older guy I know who can't wrench much anymore get his car going again while he can still drive. It's a 390 that had steel shims and there is a bit of brinelling on the decks so I'm not sure I'd trust going back with shims so the small bore of the SCE would help offset a little of the thicker gasket. Trying to get this back together as inexpensive as possible (it'll be mostly on my dime) and give it half a chance of living.

FE Technical Forum / Talk me out of it and rear main seal ?
« on: December 07, 2018, 12:36:40 PM »
The brown and white camper special I posted in another section has a pretty low mile 360 that is in good shape but has some issues I don't want to mess with right now and it still drives, sort of. Going to throw a 390 in it so the truck is in an undriveable state for the shortest time possible. I've got a 4.110 390 that the block was still good on, so I lightly honed it on the Sunnen and going to run it (it's not perfect but its serviceable). It's going back together with low buck stuff mostly, hyper pistons, etc. Has C1AE heads, running those because they already had hard seats, new valves, decks were flat. I cleaned them up, freshened up the valve job, PC seals, and prepped them for the appropriate springs for the hyd roller Brent had ground for me,227/235 @ .050", .565"/.587", with a 111 LSA. It's between 9.5 and 10 to 1 (I need to re CC the heads to verify but should be 9.7).

This truck will be the new shop truck, isn't really going to be a work truck. Mostly fetching parts, might pull a small trailer but doubtful. The truck is a 73 F250 Camper Special (pics posted in the projects forum), C6, 4.10's.

So after that long winded story....I've got a couple intakes laying around I've collected over the years and I'm trying to talk myself out of buying an RPM. I've got an iron S, which I'd like to avoid because my back hurts just looking at it. I've also got 2 Performer 390's (because they got swapped for better manifolds already).

I think the RPM would be a better choice, but I'm trying to convince myself it isn't 450 bucks better. Since this won't really tow much, if anything, and with 4.10's and stock 16" tires with the C6 it spends most of it's life above 2500. But it's also sort of on the fence. If it was build strictly as a work truck I'd put the S on it.

Also, what is the prefered method for the side seals on the rear main cap? The last time I went this far into an FE I was in my teens and the leather seals (out of production by then I'm sure but still tons laying around) swelled and sealed instantly once oil hit them. A lot of the FE's I see running around here seem pretty wet, especially rear main seeps/leaks. Skim coat of RTV on the neoprene? Someone offer a better quality seal strip?

Member Projects / Intro and new rusty pickup project
« on: November 02, 2018, 07:54:20 AM »
Been hanging around here for a while but just registered. Thought I'd post a few pictures of my first FE project in about 15 years. I will say it was really nice finding this forum and being able to source parts from guys who still show an interest in supporting the FE. This sure isn't anything high dollar, but I couldn't bring myself to part out/scrap this thing.

So what I've got is a 73 F250 camper special that a mechanic that worked with me gave me after he couldn't get it running right and parked it in his yard for north of a decade. I originally thought it was going to be parts and scrap but once I saw the truck in person and started loading it on the trailer I realized it was actually pretty solid. Sort of an odd build too. It's got a lot of options, but didn't upgrade some of the obvious stuff. It's a Camper Special, has the narrow upper trim but with the lower trim. It's a factory AC truck, C6 but with a 360. Has around 73k miles on it.

The 360 was ring and bearing'd at about 70k miles. Some unknown (couldnt remember and he couldn't find a cam card) hyd flat tappet, S code iron intake, 1406 carb and a Unilite conversion in the stock distributor. I got it fired up and it sound ok. So I rebuilt the carb, swapped in a known good Pertronix billet distributor on my shelf that has been a test unit left over from another project, new fuel pump and cleaned the tanks and started driving it (slowly and not too far, bald, rotted bias plias and such). Turns out other than some worn king pins the thing drives like new. So I had to save it. The 360 does have some issues. I think they missed the cam gear by a tooth and I suspect it's just starting to loose a lobe on the cam. So I'm doing a low buck .060 over 390 with cleaned up C1AE heads (just ordered the cam from Brent) to throw in it and will probably swap the C6 for a 4R70W or 4R100 after its in and tuned.

Bringing it home after extracting it from the blackberries.

It was pretty crusty. It was free but I had to take the bed full of tires!

The 360 after tuneup and carb rebuild. Couldn't resist cleaning it up a little bit.
