FE Technical Forum / Oil Temperature?
« on: March 01, 2020, 04:46:37 PM »
I have a 470ci BBM FE in a Cobra replica.  I have Smith's gauges, and the oil temp doesn't come up to temp the way I think it should.  The car has an oil cooler, but even with it taped off, the oil temp reads around 40C after 20 min or so.  I've seen it as high as 60C, but I'd expect the oil temp to be at least as high as the water at steady state (the water gets to 80 and stays between 80 and 90C during operation).  The oil temp gauge is mechanical.  I'm wondering if it is a calibration issue, or if the oil is really only getting up to 40C?

What suggestions do you all have?

FE Technical Forum / Sealed PCV
« on: March 11, 2019, 02:54:23 PM »
I need a totally sealed PCV system to get my CA specially constructed vehicle registration as a 1965 Cobra.  I have a PCV in one valve cover with a tube going to the intake manifold.  Will the engine run ok (at least temporarily) if I replace the other open valve cover vent with an oil fill cap (basically sealing it), or do I need to run a tube from the other valve cover to the air cleaner?

FE Technical Forum / Dumb Dyno Question
« on: June 03, 2018, 11:12:55 AM »
I'm ok with the dyno numbers for my mild 470, but they start at 3000 RPM and I'd like to know what to expect from idle up to 3000 since that's where it'll likely spend most of the time.

Why do dyno pulls start so high?  How, other than "butt dyno" do I know how the motor will behave on the street?

The motor is a BBM cast iron 427 sideoiler with a SCAT 4.15 stroker rotating assembly, stock Edelbrock heads with stock rockers, flat hydraulic lifters, and a Blue Thunder intake.

It's going into a street 427 Cobra replica.

Thanks in advance.

FE Technical Forum / FE Block Pressure Test Video?
« on: January 04, 2018, 11:24:01 PM »
I've searched without luck on information for which passages are and are not tested as part of an FE pressure test.  Can someone point me to a video, cut-away drawing, etc. that makes it clear?

Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Picture/Schematic of 1965 427 FE PCV Plumbing?
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:20:21 AM »
Can someone direct me to pictures of PCV fittings and plumbing for a 1965 FE?  I will need a closed PCV system for my Cobra replica to qualify as a 1965 SB100 registration in California. While I could rig something up to pass, I 'd like it to look stock.  From what I've found on line I need a hose from one valve cover to the filtered portion of the air cleaner, and a hose from the PCV in the other valve cover connected to the base of the carburetor. I've also found a bunch of other configurations, including going directly into the intake.  I've got a Blue Thunder dual plane intake and Holley 750 vacuum secondary carb.

Thanks in advance.

FE Technical Forum / Roller Rocker for a "Mild" Street Stroked 427?
« on: December 18, 2016, 11:25:34 AM »
I'd assumed that using a set of roller rockers on an Edelbrock RPM would be the best and most reliable top end for a mild stroked 427 street motor using a BBM block.  I've been seeing things that suggesting T&D doesn't recommend their roller rockers for the street (not sure whether that is current information).  They recommend inspecting every 2000 miles for fatique cracks, which doesn't give me confidence that it's a good solution for my application?

Thoughts?
