FE Technical Forum / 360 vs 390 rpm
« on: March 27, 2024, 07:34:58 PM »
I just installed a tach in my 74 one ton that I was told had a 390 in it years ago when I got it. My 79 bronco has a balanced 390 with comp cam. I have often wondered if the ton had a 360  Anyway My bronco will wind up to 5 grand no problem and is pulling hard. My ton truck once it gets to 3 grand sounds like it is about to sling a rod. Anyway  what to you guys think ?

FE Technical Forum / oil catch can
« on: August 09, 2022, 07:18:49 AM »
I installed an oil catch can on my 79 bronco with a 390 fe engine. The can has a spot on the top for a vent. I did not install it at first and drove about 6 miles. When I got back I checked the oil can an had some oil in the can more than I expected. So I then installed the vent breather on top of the oil can and drove it again about the same distance checked the oil can and not oil in the can. How much vacuum do I need at the pcv? My concern is the engine is now just sucking air in through the vent and not out of the engine.

FE Technical Forum / 390 smoking while holding back
« on: July 23, 2022, 09:08:31 AM »
I noticed yesterday while pulling my camper that my 390 is smoking going down hills. I shifted to 3 rd and let the engine hold back the camper. Blue smoke was rolling out the drivers side exhaust. No smoke while pulling or at idle. The engine was built by a professional about 10 miles ago. Any ideas

FE Technical Forum / 390 new points now backfiring
« on: July 26, 2021, 08:20:34 PM »
My 390 just died today when pulling into a parking lot at work. I replaced the points and condenser and it fired right up. Got it home doubled checked my gap .17 . Then I stared it up and reved it up and it starting cutting out then back firing real bad. Re checked the gap still .17. What is the problem. It idles fine but when I rev it a loud backfire.

« on: April 05, 2021, 08:24:35 PM »
Any one else using a edlebrock 600 on their 390. Mine seems to be running too rich, but if I lean it down one jet size it runs too lean and surges. I have a hei dist. and have set the plug gaps to .45. My tail pipe is black and it smells rich. Any ideas

FE Technical Forum / flex fans
« on: May 21, 2020, 07:38:34 PM »
Does anyone run a flex fan on their 390? I am thinking about changing to flex from a clutch fan. The only time my engine gets a little warm is sitting in traffic when it is real hot outside. That is where a flex fan would work for me. My clutch fan stays engaged all the time. It is new and the second one. I bought a standard duty one off line and never locks in when hot or cold. What is a good flex fan?

FE Technical Forum / which fan clutch
« on: March 20, 2020, 05:47:45 PM »
Which fan clutch do I need. I had a heavy duty and the 7 blade fan roared all the time instead of only when the engine was heating up too much. So now I have a standard duty and  it works fine now but I am afraid it will not work this summer when I run the ac a lot. This is for my 390 in my 79 bronco

FE Technical Forum / 390 still using oil
« on: March 04, 2020, 08:52:30 PM »
I posted a while back about my build 390 using oil. I have about 6000 mile on a complete rebuild by a machine shop. The same machine shop built me a 390 20 years ago so I used the same guy anyway at about 500 miles I am a quart low. When I first installed the new 390 my pvc valve was bad and was sucking oil into the engine. I drove it like this for about 3000 miles not knowing. Anyway could that have kept the rings from seating? I have talked to the machine shop several times. He says to keep driving it and it should stop using oil. I checked the oil today and I am down a little over 1\2 a quart at 307 miles. The engine runs better every time i drive it. Pulls like everything. I cant make it smoke. The vacuum is good. What do you guys think??

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 302
« on: December 30, 2019, 07:22:20 PM »
Ok I now have my 3 sbf engine to rebuild. It is a 69 block ford 302 standard bore. The pistons seem loose in the cylinders but there is barley a ring groove. I tried to put a 30 over ring in the cylinder and it would not fit so I know it it standard bore. If it was worn really bad would there not be a ring groove? I had a 30 over piston  and without rings it fit in the standard bore.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / c4 ford transmission plus water
« on: November 28, 2019, 07:46:22 PM »
I bought a 66 mustang with a rebuild c4. It was rebuild about 15 years ago. The car was driven very little then parked for the last couple of years. Any way some rain water got into it. When I pulled it today water came out of the tailshaft.  I would say about 1/2 a gallon. If I change the fluid and filter will it be ok?
