FE Technical Forum / Brake Booster 1963 Colony Park
« on: October 08, 2023, 04:55:57 PM »
I've been tracking down a brake leak and found out the master cylinder was leaking into the brake booster. I managed to snap the plastic nipple that the vacuum line hooks to. Does anyone know if I can get a replacement for it. In the shop manual it's called a Vacuum Manifold.
Also, how the heck do I removed it from the brake booster? I think it's just a rubber grommet that holds it from the inside. I'm trying no to break anything else so I don't want to start pulling and mess up the booster. Looks like the brake fluid was only in the bellows, which I assume would mean the bellows are still fine.

FE Technical Forum / FE Crate Engines
« on: February 08, 2022, 05:45:56 PM »
Are there any crate builders that you guys have used? The googles shows quite a few, one even near me(http://www.cmengines.com/). Problem is knowing the quality of the builds, not like there are Amazon review to check out.

I've got a '63 Merc Colony Park with a 390 that is at the end of it's run. Lots of blow by at highway speeds. I'd like to get something I can go down the highway and know I can stomp the gas and pass. I'd also like to get a vintage air unit, or something comparable, so I can drive it in the summer here(South Carolina) without sticking to the seat after 10 minutes.

Just thought I'd see if anyone had any first hand knowledge.

My end goal is to get discs up front, but wanted to start off replacing the single bowl MC with a dual bowl setup.
I've never done this before so I'm trying to figure out what all I will need to do.
I am thinking of going ahead and getting a setup with the proportioning valve so that will be there when I start with the discs. Is there an issue doing that? Is the master cylinder going to be the same for drum/drum, or will that be different for a disc/drum setup? I have seen mention of residual valves, is that something I've got to have as well?
For the lines, how are the current lines tied back in since the distribution block is not going to be used?

Thanks for any and all pointers!

Dan

FE Technical Forum / Damper Sleeve, is there a particular one to get
« on: March 26, 2017, 06:45:32 PM »
I think I need to sleeve my damper spacer, doing some test fitting I noticed a slight groove. Not sure how I managed to miss it.

FE Technical Forum / Blew either head or intake gasket
« on: March 14, 2017, 02:37:37 PM »
I'm still in the process of building new motor(I am slooowwww, paranoid of making mistakes) but the motor in the wagon blew either a head or intake gasket. Found water in the oil and the idle vibration is really bad.
I'd like to fix the issue, but I don't want to do any machining on the heads. Would it be ok just to pull heads and replace gaskets as a temp fix? I'm hoping this kicks me into finishing the other motor, but I really don't want to screw something up rushing.

FE Technical Forum / Timing cover install/balancer spacer
« on: March 07, 2017, 07:32:00 PM »
I'm test fitting the timing cover(seal installed) and spacer and am unsure if I have the correct spacer. Which part of the spacer should be at the seal? Mine is on the smaller diameter part of the spacer, that doesn't seem like it would seal well, I thought it would go up to the transition(where it goes from the smaller diameter, transition, then larger diameter) on the spacer. I've got the Ford racing full roller timing setup so I am wondering it that gear is wider causing the spacer not to seat where it should.

Also, is there a diagram showing which bolt holes should get sealant?

Hopefully this makes a little sense, I just could not find any good diagrams on this step.

FE Technical Forum / Intake manifold gasket question
« on: February 02, 2017, 05:37:57 AM »
Fel-Pro sells a 1246 and 1247 with the difference being the port size, and the 1247 just lists 390 FE as engine compatibility:
1246: 2.34 in. x 1.40 in. Port
1247: 2.10 in. x 1.40 in Port

I measured the ports on the manifold and Edelbrock heads and both are around 2.0625", so to me that seems to be a 1247. Am I missing something and should order the ones with the larger port?

Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Timing gear install
« on: December 29, 2016, 05:07:47 PM »
I could really use some pointers and info on installing the timing gears on my 390 build. I got the Ford full roller timing setup.

I've been reading and searching but I cannot find out for sure if I need a washer behind the cam gear. I've got the thrust plate setup, using a '69 ish block.

I've got a Scat crank and an original balancer spacer. The keyway in the spacer is not very deep, and is a different width than the long keyway at the end of the crank snout. There is another keyway in front of the one for the crankshaft gear, is that the one the spacer uses?

DO I need an oil slinger on the crank gear?

I got the crankshaft gear on, however I can't get it back off, not sure if the woodruf key is a bit off, but gear won't seem to budge. Not really sure I need to get it back off as I can get chain and cam gear on, however anyone have any advice on pulling one? I borrowed a 3 arm puller, however the gear is too small for the arms and of course with the snout, the smaller gear pullers don't have enough length to reach the back of the gear.

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, had a buddy helping me, but he's gone awol and I am trying to get this build done and this is my first build.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Stolen heads/rocker arms
« on: December 07, 2016, 02:24:47 PM »
Not sure if this is the right forum, but thought I'd post on the chances of a long shot.
My house got broken into on 12/06 and they stole my Edelbrok 60069 Heads that I had on dining room table. Was test fitting the Harland Sharp rockers. I called all the aluminum recyclers around town and left word.
I'm in Columbia, SC and figure the use of a set of 390 heads is probably pretty limited. Have a Police Report filed and have started the insurance claim. I was all set to try and finish up build over the break.

I've got to get a set of bolts/studs for the rockers. I see Edelbrok sells a stud set, but it doesn't say whether the shank(s) are sized appropriately for the oil feed hole.
What do you guys use?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Disc Brake kit From Macs Auto
« on: November 01, 2016, 04:01:26 PM »
Anyone used one for their car? I'd really like to get discs up front on the wagon and having a ready to install kit seems like a good solution.
<edit> Looks like they resell kit from Dearborn Classics.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Alternator and voltage regulator
« on: September 24, 2016, 10:38:36 AM »
I had to replace the alternator on my '63 Colony Park. After getting it back together, I was doing a voltage check and noticed under higher RPMs the voltage kept climbing up to 17V. I messed around with the voltage regulator and couldn't get the voltage down. I unplugged the plug to the voltage regulator and the battery was still getting the voltage from the alternator.
Should this be possible?
I'm thinking the regulator is not working, but the fact the battery still gets voltage from the alternator with the regulator out of the circuit makes me wonder what the heck is going on with the wiring. I don't see anything wrong with the regulator, it's a mechanical one, but when it is plugged up and didn't hear/see the relays operating either. Going to try one from NAPA that should be a drop in replacement and electronic but thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts.

Thanks,

Dan

FE Technical Forum / Alternator replacement
« on: September 03, 2016, 02:09:47 PM »
This is probably a long shot, but alternator in my 63 Colony Park died. Rock Auto shows 2 replacements, one is definitely the wrong one as the connections in the back are wrong. The other is a MOTORCRAFT GL198ARM however I cannot find a dang picture of the rear connections. Anyone know where I might find a pic or diagram of one? Napa has a replacement: https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/RSE2133300/RSE2133300_0270666810 and it is the correct connection, but I am trying to source a Motorcraft if possible.
<edit>

Welp found this: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/3I8AAOxydlFS79MF/s-l1600.jpg that's not the correct connections either.
Looks like I'll order the NAPA one and see about finding a local rebuilder as well.

Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Ignition Setup for my mildish wagon build
« on: August 24, 2016, 08:08:40 AM »
I'm at the point I need to get an ignition system for the build. I'd like to go electronic and would like to also keep my stock breather(63 Mercury Colony park) so I want to a setup that would not interfere. I'm buying the entire ignition system, so my first thought was something stock and then go pertronix but wanted to see if there might be some better choices out there.

FE Technical Forum / Scat crank woodruf key
« on: July 11, 2016, 01:30:43 PM »
I need to get a woodruf key for my scat crankshaft, and looking on Summit's site I see some reviews pointing out that the Pioneer set they have listed fits the OEM crank, however the Scat is different.  Just doing a Google search on 390 FE Scat woodruf key seems to show they key way is same size as OEM.
Anyone know for sure before I order one? They're cheap but I'd rather get it right the first time.
