1956 F100 Panel Truck. Yes, it is rough, but what a cool looking truck! It's a Craigslist ad from Cincinnati, so I'll attach a couple downloaded images in case the ad gets pulled. These are pretty scarce.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Ford Barra I-6 Engine
« on: January 12, 2024, 08:42:05 PM »
I've recently been introduced to this Ford of Australia inline 6 cylinder, which I've been hearing some very impressive things about. Some have been calling it Ford's 2JZ. Apparently, we here in the states get denied some of the good stuff....

FE Technical Forum / Lifter Replacement
« on: December 02, 2023, 09:23:28 PM »
I suspect I may have a soft lifter, though I'm still trying to confirm my suspicions. Can a bad lifter be identified without pulling the manifold? I suppose a stethoscope may be one way to point me in the right direction, but hoping for something more certain and definitive. I've been slowly eliminating other possibilities, such as pre-load adjustment, exhaust leak, etc. It seems a lifter may be the source of my noise, but I'm still uncertain and prefer not to pull the intake unless necessary.

The engine still runs good, just a bit of an annoying valvetrain noise.

If a lifter is the problem, would a Mahle lifter be acceptable? It is a flat tappet, hydraulic Bullet cam, nothing extreme. The issue of cam and lifter quality these days is worrisome.

Has anyone used these before?

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/PQX-9539008

I have stock adjustable rockers that are in need of some proper adjustment, the kind that will stay in place. I just want to confirm these will be the correct thread and part, and that they are good quality.

Thanks in advance

FE Technical Forum / Bringatrailer: Supercharged Galaxie
« on: October 28, 2023, 08:23:34 PM »
Pre-65 Galaxies don't typically do much for me (it must be a generational thing), unless there is something that makes them stand out--this one seems to hit that mark. The formal roof... eh, maybe it adds to the sleeper look....

The Mercury sign in the background really needs to be hanging in my garage; that thing is too damn cool.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Not Sure About This: 67 Cougar Fastback (not mine)
« on: September 07, 2023, 12:07:40 PM »
During one of my usual Craigslist searches for cars, I came across this gem. The first generation Cougar is my first search, given it is pretty much my favorite body design, this popped up. I'll include the text of the listing and a photo in case the ad comes down quickly. I'm not too sure about this. It is different. I'm guessing it's been done before, but I've not seen one.

Text of ad:

1967 Mercury Cougar Fastback (Custom). Yes, it's really a fastback! This is a project car started by a professional. All of the most expensive fabrication has already been done. Factory color is Candy Apple Red. Black interior but all the fold down seat is the 2 tone green that came out of the Mustang. Bucket seats and the fold down rear seat. 17" Magnum 500 style wheels (new) and new (rear) speed rated wide tires. Mustang II front suspension conversion. 2x3 tubular frame (10 gauge) front and rear. It's mini-tubed 4" total. I have a couple of hood choices: Stock (new) Dynacorn hood or a custom-made hood. This car is easily 90% rust free. Power front and rear disc brakes, A/C conversion (factory) Power Rack and pinion Steering. A very low miles 347 stroker short block w/289 heads w/screw in studs (off the engine) or a 289, 302 or 351W rebuildable engine(s) rebuildable engine. Has new high lift hydraulic camshaft (I need to find the info card that came with the cam). Arp rod bolts. High volume oil pump. Deep rear sump oil pan. Old style Edelbrock torquer aluminum high rise intake, HP C4 transmission (very hard shift). Shortened (4") 9" rearend w/3:90 new ring and pinion. I do not know what the actual mileage is because the dash/gauges were converted to an XR7 wood grain w/tachometer. When it comes to restorations like this, mileage is irrelevant. Far too many things to list in this add. Lots of new parts! The car needs a windshield, steering wheel (I have the steering column), some chrome around the back window, nothing big missing. Serious calls only! Scammers beware! I can only accept phone calls and I will not answer texts! No e-mails because for some reason my ability to reply has been removed. A lot of extra parts. $ 25,000 OBO

Is it possible for a clutch type LSD to create a vibration during normal, straight-line driving? I have begun to suspect my 9in. aftermarket third member (about 2 years old) as being the possible source of a vibration that I have been tracking down, one that I thought I had solved.

I was having a vibration in the chassis (not steering wheel) at 55-60 MPH, though it sometimes varied a bit. It was not tire or wheel related. I installed new u-joints, didn't solve the issue. I spun the driveshaft 180 degrees on the differential yoke, which seemed to improve slightly, but not a solution. I then installed a spare driveshaft, which seemed to solve the problem, making me suspect my original driveshaft needs balanced. However, yesterday during a drive, it seemed to momentarily return, and under some strange circumstances.

I turned left from a stop sign under normal driving throttle, whereupon initial throttle application, a little "chirp" from the rear left tire occurred, as if it had been sitting on a rock, which was spit out and caused the tire to "chirp". I state "as if", because I don't think the left rear tire was on anything but clean pavement (though I can't be 100% certain).

I drove to the next stop sign and turned right under normal throttle, which is when my vibration returned at 50-60 MPH. I instantly thought of the differential, and was able to perform a couple somewhat aggressive left and right turns from a stop, and the vibration hasn't returned as of yet.

Motor and trans mounts are good. Inspected driveline looking for issues, nothing seems out of the ordinary.

I'm wondering if it needs another bottle of friction modifier and another "break-in" period in an abandonned parking lot.

Any thoughts and advice?

FE Technical Forum / 7 Litre Driveshaft
« on: July 16, 2023, 05:20:27 AM »
I have a spare 7 Litre driveshaft that came with the toploader I purchased from the same. I was looking it over this morning and noticed what appears to be a rubber insert where the differential yoke meets the driveshaft tube, as if it is some sort of a vibration damper built into the driveshaft--does anyone have any knowledge of these shafts?

The driveshaft currently in my Galaxie does not have this feature; it was installed in the car when I purchased it, a Z code 390 C6 car originally. I'm just curious if this was a 7 Litre part to help make it the "smooth brute" Ford advertised

FE Technical Forum / Galaxie Unobtainium--almost
« on: June 18, 2023, 03:48:30 PM »
After a few years of searching and purchasing (nearly 10 years since I purchased the car), I've finally got my Galaxie mostly into the configuration I've envisioned, with a fair amount of help over the years filtering through the immense wealth of knowledge found within the members of this website.

I purchased the car back in 2014, getting a decent deal on it because the fairly fresh 390 was burning oil and the owner couldn't figure it out (the intake manifold gasket, valley pan removed, and umbrella valve stem seals replaced with positive stop).

It was a bench seat, column shifted C6 car with a 3.25 open 9". The LTD/7 Litre grille shells were warped, powder coated examples that I replace a couple years ago with light to moderate pitted chrome pieces. I sourced the interior from a 7 Litre that was in an advanced state of decay, but with a nice interior, converting to a floor shifted console car. Two years ago, or so, I located someone scrapping out a 7 Litre convertible 4 speed car, obtaining the HEH-CG big in/out with all the parts to convert my AT console to 4 speed and OE Ford shifter. The Ford shifter functioned acceptably, but I always wanted the Hurst shifter for it, but the Galaxie with console shifter was long out of production, probably back in late 70's/early 80's. I finally found a nice NOS shifter for an amazing price, having to pay more for the install kit than the shifter (install kit long out of production as well).

The car is a 1966 Galaxie 500, A/C car, radio delete dash with clock (need to delete plate it), nice running Z code 390 4bbl, Big in/out Toploader, 3.89 traction lock 9", 7 Litre interior with console and hurst shifter. Now maybe it needs black stamped steel wheels and poverty caps--I always liked that look.

Does anyone know how rare the radio delete dash is? I'm curious.

I drive it quite a bit, but not much for car shows, so I thought I'd show it off here :)
