FE Technical Forum / collapsed lifter?
« on: June 08, 2016, 08:03:57 PM »
I built a motor for my dad and it ran excellent when it left my shop.  he came back and I wanted to go over nuts and bolts of his hot rod.   so I am hearing a tapping noise it sound like in the valve train.  all the preload is correct on the valves.   it is a flat tappet hydro with brad penn break in oil and 100 miles most on the engine.   the tapping sounds like it is a lifter,  the truck also has 3 cylinders that are not as hot as the others.  I would say 80 degrees cooler (laser thermometer)  is it bad lifter? and or do I have a few bad lifters?  i have never experienced this before.

FE Technical Forum / sleeving a block
« on: June 06, 2016, 08:33:40 PM »
its just a dumb question i am going to ask.   any of the engine builders in here ever seen or done all 8 sleeves in a motor?  i have never had to sleeve one personally but i am just wondering if it is possible and or can it be done?

FE Technical Forum / Service block
« on: June 01, 2016, 08:05:16 PM »
I got taking apart what was a 390 standard bore out of a 72 highboy. Heard it run and all that. I think it's a service block after talking to a friend of mine. To the engine builders in here is this thing worth my time or move on.  My plan was pump gas motor for a street car. I attached a pic. I can't figure it out it is not in my books.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / FI TECH EFI
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:07:23 PM »
I was watching this past weekend engine power did fi tech on dyno.   it really did look easy to hook up.  so I went to their site and dug into installing it and yes it really is easy to hook up,  literally just a few wires,  and you don't need to be college educated to do it. that being said and I know their is proponents of injection on here and I am not picking on it any way shape or form.  but myself being injection illiterate ill call it,  the thing that made me scratch my head was that they swapped injection for a carb and then dynoed and the carb didn't add any torque numbers but it did add about 15 more horsepower if I remember correctly and the hosts of the show honestly had nothing to say they both were surprised,   heck I was too.   So seeing these injection systems are self learning and adjust to the "driver" ill call it. is that just not a surprise on the power to where the injection system hadn't fully learned the driving habits and or was just brand new with no real time running on it?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / engine building prices
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:48:47 AM »
I have been putting together an engine for my dad for his rat rod,  it is a different brand and ill leave it at that.  I haven't put one together in quite a few years and I forgot how much time it takes when you put all this stuff together and check clearances etc etc.   so I guess I have got a reality check as to why machine shops cost so much to assemble an engine,  the hours can add up fast.  but also I do thank machine shops and or engine builders for trying to keep assembly prices as fair as possible. :)

FE Technical Forum / fuel pressure problem
« on: October 11, 2015, 09:03:49 AM »
I have a holley red fuel pump and a holley regulator,  I cant keep the pressure regulated,  I replaced diaphragm and put in the low pressure (red spring)  I turned on pump and set pressure to 6 psi,  it stayed their for about 5 seconds and then just steadily climbs up and I cant control it.   I do not have a return line on this car it never needed one.  the regulator always did a good job.  do the internal check ball and spring on these regulators go bad?  its never happened to me before so I have been scratching my head on this one.  that being said I could use some answers on this and also some pressure regulator recommendations.

finally got my butt to the track and had a great time testing.  it was hot as hell out 80 degrees with 77% humidity.  made 4 passes at top end dragways in sabin m.n.  heres the time slips attached and rough overview of motor it is a robert pond aluminum 427 with blue thunder medium riser heads, 4.250 bore and stroke,12:1 compression,  edelbrock 427f intake and a pro systems 1250 dominator,  a rollerized c6 and 4:56 gears.  i had barry from survival build this thing for me and it made 705 hpwr.  thanks alot barry i could not be happier to say the least about how this engine performed.  here are some time slips attached and ill try to link motor on dyno from youtube if i can.  any questions feel free to ask i have nothing to hide

FE Technical Forum / cvr water pump leaking
« on: July 18, 2015, 08:01:04 PM »
i installed the cvr water pump with jays adapters and they fit awesome.  thanks jay.  the problem I am having is that I pressurized the system to 14 lbs with the stant pressure kit and I am losing pressure,  so not getting discouraged I put a vacuum on the system of 23 lbs and is leaking back also.  so 1 more time I pressurized it and got out the soap bottle and the pump motor gasket that bolts to the front of the main housing makes bubbles all the way around, so im not quite mad yet but I am wondering if I fill the system with coolant if that will make the seal swell and end the leaks?   any thoughts anyone? and or anybody else experience this?

FE Technical Forum / ice ignition
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:50:18 AM »
i was reading a post on the msd ignition as opposed to mallory.  and how msd was better.  i have seen on you tube about ice ignition  and how they are better than msd.  i explored this option for this ignition and tried to get in contact with ice ignition and just no luck at all trying to speak with anybody.   i wish i could post the thread from youtube but i know its on their.  also is their anybody in here that has run or is running that ignition?

FE Technical Forum / head gasket
« on: June 07, 2015, 09:27:22 AM »
i fired up my comet yesterday with a 428.  the radiator cap was off and it was pushing a little water out the radiator a trail all the way out my shop door.  i fill water with a lift pump under vacuum to make sure all the air is out.  another friend of mine borrowed me the stant pressure tester kit so i started car and no pressure at all on the tester.  the only time that guage moved was when i would turn on the electric water pump then the guage would show just very litlle pressure.  i am, i think worried about this some what.  the car has cometic head gaskets on it and my friend told me that a person should use copper spray on gasket before putting on?  i asked cometic that a couple years ago when i assembled and they said to just put on the bare head gasket (no copper spray).  so thats what i did.   so now i am going to go to local semi parts dealer and buy a test kit for gases in the coolant system.  and then base my decision from their.  any body have problem like this and or give a guy some advice.  i really dont want to pull motor again with out making darn sure first.  engine is 428 with alum edelbrock heads.

FE Technical Forum / auto meter mechanical temp guage
« on: May 24, 2015, 10:59:20 AM »
ihave been having problem with autometer temp mechanical guages.  anyone else have this problem?   it doesnt seem to read anywhere near where it should.  i have sent it in to autometer and they sent me a new one,  still the same thing,  i also check temp with a laser themometer and i was reading 20 degrees cooler than the autometer guage,  questioning my guage i borrowed one from a shop neighbor and it was right in line with my laser thermometer.  i am thinking about pulling out that mechanical guage and trying out an electrical guage.  anybody else have this problem?  and or any guidance?

FE Technical Forum / evans coolant
« on: December 26, 2014, 11:12:18 AM »
i am a fan of the evans coolant as far as how it can save a motor.  it boils extremely hotter and doesnt allow hot spots to build on your cylinder walls,  hence causing pitting and leaking. as opposed to just regular antifreeze and if you blow a head gasket for example it will wash into the bearings but it will not hurt the bearings, as a water mix would.   my problem with it is that it just doesnt seem to flow as good as a water mix through the electic water pump.  i have meziere pump and it just doesnt flow as good.  should a guy try some other type of pump?

FE Technical Forum / 65 comet
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:05:47 PM »
i am looking for a kit to remove the shock towers so i can make some real headers that breathe. and possibly install a manual rack and pinion and get rid of the factory steering parts which i believe is heavier than a manual rack and pinion. does anybody make this kit for a comet?
