FE Technical Forum / Installing FT oil pan on my FE in a pickup
« on: June 04, 2022, 05:23:35 PM »
Hello all,

I will be pulling the 428 out of my F-350 do some work that needs for it to be out of the way.

Since it will be out of the truck, I have an FT "breadbox" oil pan that I was thinking of putting on because I already have it and I would like the extra oil capacity. My truck is 2wd, so this is supposed to fit and clear the steering gear with no problems. I've seen photos and my own measurements support this.

I don’t race the truck. It is used to haul my camper around. But it is quicker than the usual type of truck this pan was meant for ;)

So, my question is: For my usage, does extra baffling need to be added or would I be OK just installing the pan and pick up as is? (I know I need to drill and tap the block web for this style pickup).

Thanks for any help, Erich Weber

FE Technical Forum / Long day and tired, could use a little help
« on: July 07, 2021, 09:15:21 PM »
Hello all, I have a question. What could be the problem with an FE that started oil smoking badly and used 5 quarts of oil to go about 70 miles? This started after a run thru the gears but never going past 5000 rpm.

This is in my truck. A .030 over 428 with Ed heads, an RPM intake, Lunati hyd roller cam and lifters and FPA headers. This combo has given me no problems for the last 5 years. Even with the smoking and oil consumption all my gauges, including o2 are reading normal. I drove it 60 miles home and it ran fine. No missing, bucking, surging, stalling. Just 65 mph, 2500 rpm, smooth as ever. Just cant see anything behind me. It is a little embarrassing.

The truck is home now and I had no time to do anything with it. Just parked it. Trouble shooting comes tomorrow.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Any and all replies/help would be appreciated. This is a new one on me.

Erich

FE Technical Forum / Question regarding my compression ratio
« on: August 18, 2017, 07:35:29 PM »
I have a couple of questions about the compression ratio of my FE. It is an “A” scratch 428 from a ’67 T-Bird. It was rebuilt sometime before I bought the truck it is in. The pistons are marked L2245 and are .030” over. (Photos below, I hope)

My 1st question is can anyone tell me who made these (TRW?) and also what the dish volume would actually be?

My other question is regarding the heads. I am running a set of out of the box Edelbrock #60065 heads. They claim 72 cc’s but I seem to recall reading somewhere that they run a little larger.

This engine has been back together and running fine for 14000 miles now. I plan on asking more questions about this engine but I wanted to be able to give a good answer regarding the compression ratio if it comes up. Using various online calculators and guessing on the piston dish I'm coming up with between a 9.6 and 10.2 ratio.

If someone wants to give me their calculation on this the other specs are:
Bore=4.16"
Stroke=3.98
Piston in the hole=.017"
Head gasket compressed=.038"
Head gasket bore=4.400" or volume=9.90cc's (Edelbrock 7337 head gasket)

Thanks, Erich
