FE Technical Forum / 428/C6 no block plate?
« on: January 18, 2024, 05:25:46 AM »
Have a 428 with a C6. Starter went out, I had a mechanic put a new one in, new starter ate the flywheel. Now at different mechanic, been held up for weeks because new mechanic seems sure it should have a block plate and it doesn’t. He can’t find one that fits. I think it never had one. He thinks it has to have one or I could end up in the same spot. Please help. Literally been dealing with this for years and it has cost me thousands because my starter went out.

FE Technical Forum / Fan shroud for 63 Galaxie 427
« on: December 26, 2023, 12:29:20 PM »
Hello,

I have a 63 1/2 R code Galaxie and I am going to be taking out the radiator and repainting it along with the overflow tank and when I put it all back in I also want to put a correct shroud on it. Car came to me without a fan shroud. Guy I know with the same car told me I needed a 2 piece (he said top and bottom) fan shroud. I saw it on his car but didn’t pay attention to the details or take pics (duh) and I have found that the top and bottom fan shrouds, even plastic repops, are impossible to find. I did pick up a shroud off ebay (see pic) that came off a 62 t-bird and I think it will work, but maybe I’m wrong. I see that I can also get brackets on ebay (assume I’ll need those) but other than that I’m not quite sure how the fan shroud attaches. I don’t see any drilled holes on the car for mounting the brackets. Thoughts?

FE Technical Forum / Starter chewed up 428 flex plate
« on: August 17, 2023, 04:28:16 PM »
Title pretty much says it all. 428 w C6. Hired a mechanic to put in a starter, got maybe 200 starts before it died and now I see there are some teeth on the flexplate that are pretty messed up. So, how do I get a replacement? I need one balanced exactly the same, right? Does that mean the old one needs to be removed so the new one can be balanced first? That’s what I’m assuming from other post I have read. Mechanic (different guy, never going back to old guy) wants me to find out for him, maybe get replacement before he takes the car. FE Technical Forum / Little pistons fell out of starter?
« on: August 16, 2023, 10:08:12 PM »
Not sure what is going on. Car (1965 Mercury Park Lane with 428 and C6) has been sitting for awhile, starter is fairly new. Charged the battery up (tested good at store), spray the carb with starting fluid, expecting it to start right up, no. Not turning over, starter clicking/grinding. While trying to get it started, it sounded like something fell out of the car. I found 2 of these little metal pistons on the garage floor. I’m stumped.

ETA: New starter ordered. It’s gotta be the starter, right?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Impossible bolt
« on: February 23, 2023, 05:32:36 PM »
1965 full sized Merc. There are 4 bolts holding the rear bumper bracket to the frame. 2 are out, one on each side. The difficult ones go through the frame and there’s a nut there that is difficult to reach. There is a decent sized access hole but it’s at a weird angle. I am able to get a flex extender on my impact driver and get that on the bolt head on the outside but there’s no way to hold the nut inside the frame. I offered a local mobile welder $100 to do the job and he declined. If it was clean metal I would weld the nut in place but it is rusty and hard to get to in order to clean. It’s even hard to get a picture but I tried. Any ideas? There’s very little room to move so any ideas of cutting or grinding the bolt head are out.

ETA: I can get a small air hammer to the bolt head but trying that will scratch my exhaust tips. Not a big deal if I was sure that would work, but I’m not.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / I quit drinking
« on: January 09, 2023, 01:31:53 AM »
It’s been almost 3 years now. I used to binge drink alone and not sleep and I would spiral into this dark mania, often posting on the internet in a complete blackout. That’s actually why I’m posting this here. I don’t think I did much of that here, but I may have and I wanted to explain and apologize. I was a completely different person when I drank. It started just like everyone else, I’d have a few beers after work. I have chronic pain and it helped with that quite a bit too, but I got to a point where I couldn’t keep myself from losing control. I’ve wrecked my reputation with a lot of people, I’m sure some think I’m a nutcase. Anyway, yeah, I did it mostly for my mental health and it’s really been like night and day. Not here to preach. You all do you. I was bad at drinking, so I don’t do it anymore and I am extremely sorry to anybody I offended.

FE Technical Forum / Hot starting issues with 427 and weird smoke
« on: October 11, 2022, 06:21:28 PM »
Previous owner had warned me that it doesn’t like to start when hot. Had my first instance of that today where I had let it sit for about 90 minutes but it still was apparently too hot. I plan to switch out the starter with a RobbMc as cjshaker had suggested in another thread but wanted to discuss some weird smoke that I couldn’t figure out. So, with the hood up I was noticing some small puffs of smoke coming from the drivers side, like maybe around the exhaust manifold when it was almost, but not quite going to start. I could stand next to the car and try and start it in neutral while looking into the engine compartment but I could not see exactly where the smoke was coming from. It did eventually start and I had to force some gas through it to get it going and there was no smoke once it started running. I’ll try and get someone to help me later to pinpoint the source but I thought maybe someone here would have an idea? Car did smell like burnt tires when I got it home, but there’s other explanations for that. :)

ETA: Seems that 2 hours is the required cool down time. Started fine after 2 hours and no weird smoke. Also, it does have some kind of mini starter. I’m not sure what brand.

FE Technical Forum / Best battery for 427 with alternator?
« on: October 02, 2022, 03:38:24 PM »
Recent purchase, 63 Galaxie, looks like the battery is toast. Has been converted from generator to alternator. Battery that is in there is a Duralast Gold Group 27 size battery. Isn’t that a marine battery? Is there some reason for using that size? Should I replace it with something else? Oreilly Auto says it should be a 29 NF size. TIA.

ETA: Apparently this car has had some issues with not starting when hot. If CCA is an issue what about something like this as a replacement?

FE Technical Forum / Need help with tire size for 63 Galaxie
« on: September 13, 2022, 03:40:10 PM »
I’m an idiot when it comes to this stuff, which number is what, what will fit, etc and I ordered some tires from Jegs for my 63 Galaxie 427 and they are too wide. They are Mickey Thomspons, 245/60R15 and they are on the stock 15 by 5.5 Kelsey Hayes wheels. They rub on the inside at the leaf spring mount. There is another version of this tire that is a 235. Will that fit? Is there anybody out there running these wheels on a stock car with a tire package they really like? Does anyone know the backspacing on these? If I measure it looks like 4 inches. TIA.

Hey guys. Got my Galaxie last Friday. It’s pretty great. I did notice some odd sounds from the motor. One is sort of a thump that might just be me hearing the exhaust passing through. It sort of comes and goes. Also, might just be an old belt but there seems to be sort of a ticking sound that increases frequency with RPM. I tried to capture it with a video, but not sure you can hear it, which is here:

https://youtu.be/MHW5xQlqDUI

First, I will get belt conditioner on the belts and see if it goes away. Hopefully that’s what I’m hearing. Read some other threads and am aware of other possible culprits. Just thought I’d drop in and get this started in case I need to come back here and ask for more help. Maybe it’s just how it sounds? I’m unsure of what cam is in it. Thoughts?

FE Technical Forum / 390 Holman and Moody block?
« on: May 12, 2022, 11:08:50 PM »
Found a guy selling what he says is a 390 Holman and Moody service block for $575. Box and everything. I should def buy that, right? He says he doesn’t see a date code or any casting numbers on it at all. Kinda weird, but also not weird for a service block. What really seems weird to me is that he says it’s a 390. Maybe it isn’t?

FE Technical Forum / 428 detonation problem solved!
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:45:17 PM »
Wow, OK, this has been years. I have done, everything. Exhaust, head gasket job, Holley carb with electric choke, electric fans, aluminum radiator ... ran great for about 15 minutes, and then crappy. Put a Pertronix on it, seemed worse. Took it to a guy in Tucson named Chuck Hawk.

No wonder I had to wait a month to see the guy. He figured out that my Pertronix had a bad magnet, set my timing, and it's all good now. Taken years! No more detonation! Best 90 bucks I ever spent. Timing wizard had some kinda laser gun!

So, Summit replaced the bad Pertronix, and now the car runs great. Never, ever woulda figured that out, that one magnet was bad.

Quick test: use a magnet, test that each stage has magnetism before installing
It's still a big heavy old car, and it is not fast 0-60, the way I drive it. "Turnpike Cruiser" it wants to go like 85. Will go 110 no problem.

FE Technical Forum / PCV connection to valve cover
« on: January 20, 2017, 07:45:55 PM »
So, I changed over my system to add a PCV valve. Since I had the old hose that was connected to these valve covers, I figured it would be an easy fit. Somehow, this valve seems to just kind of rest in the hole. I can't remember how I disconnected it. When running, it makes a fairly loud sucking sound, which doesn't bother me so much, but I know I am missing something. I can't see how loosening the clamp will make it go in. Any ideas? See photo.
