FE Engine Dyno Results / 418 FE for GT40
« on: November 21, 2023, 04:48:38 PM »
Just got back from Jay's dyno running the 418 I assembled for the GT40 replica I am building.

Thanks to Brent for helping me select and procure the components and sciencing out the cam. I wanted a pump gas engine that was fairly docile, easy on the stock valve train. rpm to about 5500 make 425 to 450 horse and a lot of torque.

360 105 block .030
428 1U crank
Scat FE rods
Diamond pistons
10.25 compression
Total seal rings
Morel hydraulic lifters
Comp 3/8 push rods 7.70
Lykins spec'd Comp Hyd roller. (Cam card attached)
Edlebrock heads from Jay's Car Craft engine,  unported
Rocker Arms Unlimited stock rockers with end stands
Comp 914 springs
Performer RPM knockoff intake manifold ported by Joe Craine
800 Holley double pumper

We made a total of 13 dyno pulls, ran at different rpm ranges, we did a timing loop, and tested 3 carb spacers

The best run was what I call a hero pull which is cold water and hot oil that netted 439.5 hp and 497 torque. Power numbers under more normal dyno conditions were 433.1 @ 5600 and 490.6@3700.  We made one pull from 3000 to 6100 just to see where the power dropped off and to get a complete profile of the power curve. As you can see in the graph, it took a dive at 6000. I think this was loss of valve train control.  I purposely went with a modest spring to lessen stress on the rocker assembly . Since this engine will never see that rpm things will be just fine. I did not set out to fine tune the engine to extract the last few horsepower  The carb was slightly rich but we left it alone.. I mainly wanted to see what the engine combination would do, check for leaks and any mechanical gremlins. No need to flog it further.

Comments:  I am quite surprised by the performance of what i would normally consider a tiny cam.. Brent and I discussed my goals and I went with his recommendation even though I would have dialed in more intake duration.. Kudos to Brent  he knows his stuff..

I am sure a search would uncover the answer, but I am feeling lazy... How is the tach signal on my 68 Cougar 302 generated?  The last owner just had to go and put a GM 1 wire alternator on it. Now no tach and no electric gauges

FE Engine Dyno Results / 520 inch MEL
« on: May 27, 2023, 08:15:12 PM »
My final MEL build..
462 Block, offset ground stock crank. Scat rods, Ross Pistons, Performer RPM intake adapted from a 385 series.  Joe Craine ported heads,  215/177 valves.. Custom hydraulic roller from Comp..9.5 compression. Distributors are getting hard to find so I used an old Mallory dual point. Holley 800 carb.. I limited the RPM to 5500, since it was an all stock valve train.  Cranked out some real impressive torque. Sold the engine to a guy in Boston.. Kinda wish I had kept it

Just finishing up a tube chassis glass 57 Thunderbird. My question is about window rules.. I am running in the 10.0s  don't want to do all it takes when you go faster.. are side windows or nets required?  What if I use arm restraints instead?  How about back window? Is one required

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Anyone near Morehead Ky?
« on: May 03, 2023, 02:34:56 PM »
I am looking at a 67 Cougar at ADM Auto Sales limited  942 Clearfield St Morehead Ky.  Was listed on Facebook..  Price is more than right and dealers says no charge delivery to Wi.  If it's a real deal I can't pass it up.  But need to allay my natural skepticism.. Has anybody heard of or know this dealership?  I would be willing to pay for someone's time just to lay eyes on it and confirm it is the car being advertised..Not looking for a full inspection.

Can't be too careful these days

Buddy had a cam go flat on his Cleveland.. Trying to figure out what cam is in it... Only marking is the number 1658 stamped on the back.. I am guessing it is  a Melling or Elgin or something along those likes.. Anyone have any ideas.. We are trying to figure out the specs so we can drop down a couple steps as this one needs a higher stall converter

FE Technical Forum / 427 questions
« on: December 23, 2022, 07:08:08 PM »
I am helping a buddy out who had the cam in his 427 Cobra go flat. The block is a side oiler drilled for hydraulic lifters.. code under the oil filter is 0F30
on the back of the block is cast 66-427.  Service block?

Supposedly it was built back in the 80s  Has N head with 2.19 valves 13:1 compression .020 shim head gasket Crane cam. Cam is  SS 310 nc

Plan is to get compression down to run pump gas by going with thicker head gasket and a cam that bleeds off some low rpm cylinder pressure. He would like it to idle about like it currently does as far as lope... Anybody have specs on that old Crane solid cam
