Hi, I'm going to need custom steel racing connecting rods with a length in the 9-in range. This is for the blown 337 Lincoln flathead for land speed racing. I got a price from Carrillo of about $800 per rod.
So I want to investigate the feasibility of making a couple sets on my own. Has anyone done this? If so, what is the material and the process?
It only has a three and a half inch bore, so I don't think the big end of an aluminum rod would fit through it, plus with a track length of 5 mi, I have heard that aluminum rods aren't the best for land speed racing. That is why I'm planning on using steel.

Thanks, Joel

On a cast iron block, half filled, at 22 lbs boost +/- what would be the minimum safe wall thickness? THis is an O/T engine, a Lincoln 337 flathead.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Does piston weight create a flywheel effect?
« on: January 11, 2021, 09:09:40 PM »
I always figured that the heavier a set of pistons is, the more power it takes to accelerate them. But I didn't think that they have a flywheel effect when decelerating. Since they reciprocate, I think they absorb power all the time. Someone on another forum says that in a multicylinder engine, the pistons create a flywheel effect, and the heavier the piston the more the flywheel affect. So what do you guys think?

Sorry, this is not FE, but this place definitely has a lot of smart people, maybe some one knows this? This is a max effort, blown racing ford flathead where the heads and pistons will be custom built. What is the proven best design for power? Thanks, Joel

Non-FE Discussion Forum / What material to use for building a main girdle?
« on: September 08, 2020, 05:50:43 PM »
If there is one thing I have learned about this forum, it is that there are a lot of smart experienced metal guys here. So my question is, if a guy was going to build a full main girdle that incorporated five main caps and pan rails, what material would you select and why? Assuming you had access to the CNC machining center, what would be your process? Thanks, Joel

P.S. not for an FE, but for a Ford

Non-FE Discussion Forum / "IT'S A SMALL WORLD" REPORT
« on: November 29, 2018, 10:11:33 PM »
So I'm one of the only people on earth who is interested in parts for the 1910 Maytag car. Because I have one, and when you have a collector car, you have to hoard parts for it right? And when you are talking about a car where probably less than 15 or 20 remain on the planet, that is especially true. Someone on the H.A.M.B. messaged me about a fellow who was supposed to have a pair of 1910 Maytag parts cars. Perhaps the only ones in existence. So I followed up on the lead, and talked to the guy, and yes, that's what he has. He sent pictures, I agreed to buy them, and started planning my trip to Montana to pick them up. So me and this fellow spent a while on the phone, talking about cars. He tells me he has a 64 Comet 427  cammer. Of course I mentioned Jay. And it ends up that this guy is FE Power member Leny Mason!  Haha, small; world indeed. I'm really looking forward to meeting you, Leny!
