FE Technical Forum / Re: Cometic MLS head gasket misbuilt?
« on: April 20, 2024, 06:10:52 PM »
Someone on one of the FE Facebook pages just a couple weeks ago posted similar mis-formed Cometic FE heads gaskets. The consensus of the knowledgeable seemed to be they are indeed “wrong”. No idea what’s going on at Cometic, but you may not be alone.

Broader Performance just posted a video illustrating how Speedmaster is blatantly ripping him off. Video is about 20 minutes long. A good consumer heads up, and some points to consider considering the many other products they copy.

Please be respectful of Jay's forum with any "political" comments.

A bit of a warning for the language too, essentially for some who might be watching at work in the office.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 3U crankshaft

Thanks,Kevin! the motor...and crank was lifted out of a 74 pickup, definitely 390,had 410 pistons,D4 casting,I think Dec,73 date. So...I'm back in business using the crank in a car without a bunch of mods?

Yes

I'm doing that, ask we speak but, offset grinding it to SBC journals, as well.

You will have to have the snout turned down from 1 3/4 to 1 3/8. The center in the snout will not be on center of the main bearing, so it will have to be recut first. A machine shop will charge you about 3.5 hr labor to turn it and recut the keyways. I do that part myself. You will then have to open the flywheel to the FT diameter. Add another hr for that.

Offset grinding it costs a additional $600, including bearings.

1 3/4 to 1 3/8? This crank is at 1 3/8 now. I'm confused...what's the diameter of a car crank snout?

1 3/8” is passenger car/pickup truck size. The 3U crank is a cast iron pickup truck crank, not the forged FT crank. The forged FT crank snout diameter is 1 3/4”. Sorry.

Private Classifieds / Re: 1967 427 Fairlane on BAT "W" code
« on: March 21, 2024, 01:08:40 PM »
What parts would that be?
Car did sell though.
They worked something out. So it sold I'm sure above 127K.

Just a couple things I noticed, the engine block has a 1971 casting date, and the rear end pumpkin has a 1969 casting date. Not surprising since it looks like the car originally had a race history. But that’s the kind of stuff that make some cars worth much more. And the seller didn’t try to hide that in the pictures.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Ford FE C7SF-12127-A distributor application?
« on: March 15, 2024, 05:49:21 PM »
Also auto trans Fairlane 390 315 horse with and Without thermactor

That application wasn’t listed in the Ford or Mercury MPC’s, but it is listed in the 1967 Ford & Mercury Intermediate Shop Manual, I should have checked there too. Sorry I missed that one, thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Question on shelf life of race fuel
« on: March 05, 2024, 06:38:49 PM »
I’ve used some 3-5 year old 110 race gas a few times, and never noticed any difference in performance or drivability. That’s fuel I had in plastic fuel jugs, we have a few stations here that have it at the pump, so not sealed cans. As much as possible I do try to mix it with some fresh race gas as soon as possible. Just my experience.

Can anyone here tell me what a C7SF-12127-A distributor was originally for?. Thanks

1967 T-Bird with 390 (except thermactor exhaust)
1967 Mercury full size with 410 and automatic transmission (less Inco)

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Calliope Engine Project
« on: February 23, 2024, 04:27:58 PM »
Nice article in Hot Rod about the Calliope project.  We are currently waiting for a slot to open up at the foundry so we can cast the heads.  3D printed water jacket cores are done...

https://www.motortrend.com/news/experimental-ford-lemans-v8-calliope-big-block-discovered/

Cool article, and some nice rarely seen Calliope pictures. Too bad Motortrend made the common mistake of mis-identifying the early Boss 429 engine by calling it a 427 SOHC, in the bottom right of their own Hot Rod magazine cover photo. It sure would be nice if these media outlets would ask someone to proofread their stuff  ;)

FE Technical Forum / Re: Trickflow heads - gone for good?
« on: February 22, 2024, 04:19:58 PM »
I talked to Trick Flow at the SEMA show last fall, pretty sure this subject came up last year and I replied there after my conversation with them, but yes, they confirmed at that time just big issues getting back up to “normal” after the pandemic. Same issues Jay dealt with for a couple years - foundries got super busy, they had to take care of larger customers, even larger than Trick Flow, loss of experienced employees and difficulties getting them replaced. They’ve tried switching to different foundries but that often requires trial and error at the new foundry to get the “pour” to work right. And often using a different foundry requires totally new tooling, which is a major expense. The Trick Flow guys assured me the FE products, both heads & intakes have been good sellers, and they didn’t have any intention to drop them, but they’re extremely frustrated too getting stuff back up to speed. I believe they’re telling the truth, since I’ve seen Jay and other local companies dealing with the same stuff. Let’s hope so.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Deck with water jacket rods/pins showing
« on: February 21, 2024, 09:30:41 AM »
Thanks to our member Rod C. who used to work at Ford, we've learned the technical term for those rods found inside the water jackets are Chaplets. They're used in the casting process to support the cores. Sometimes they melt away when the block is cast, often they still remain, but they don't serve any purpose after. Totally normal to see them on the block deck.

The coolest thing about the pickup was the trailer he used was a fishing boat complete with outboard motor.

Just going by comments I’ve seen on the internet the last couple years, the hardest issue I’ve seen reported is getting anyone to answer the phone, or even any form of communication, from both Broader or Performance Automatic. I’ve seen a few people report emails to Broader have much more success. Not trying to knock either company, I’ve bought parts from both and been happy, just giving you a heads up. I think some of these small companies are just overwhelmed with business and supply issues the last couple years. A lot of people like having a person to talk to though, especially on a big item like a complete transmission. So just a heads up if you have a timeline, don’t wait too long to start the contact.

I build my own automatics, so I don’t have any experience with buying a complete one, Ford Motorsports used to have a complete gear train kit for building a wide ratio rollerized C6, and it was a nice piece with all Ford OEM parts, I used a couple, but sadly Motorsports dropped it years ago. I think there are other companies that have picked that up though.

I’d also suggest checking if you have anyone local that might be capable. I know sometimes it’s a crapshoot finding someone good with non-stock builds, or with Ford stuff in general, but they can be out there. We have a some decent transmission shops in Minnesota. If you have a Dragstrip local ask some Ford racers who they use.

I’ll just add, try to report back to us if you have success contacting anyone, and how the transaction goes.

Jeff Lutz had to throw in the towel yesterday after some spun bearings apparently. Brett LaSala went 6.26 @ 227 today to wrap up the overall win on Sick Week.
