Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Dewalt 3/8" impact 20V

I've been quite satisfied with both my12V Dewalt now my 20V Dewalt brushless.  Compact size, good power, and shares battery packs with all my other battery tools.

Seeing all the new tech with superchargers for the late model engines, but have never seen a Whipple or Kenne-Bell supercharger on a FE engine.  Would it be that difficult to do, or is the Paxton-style and Roots blowers just that much more straightforward an installation?

No reason to not use the valley tin if it fits.  Minimizes hot oil splash on the bottom of the intake manifold.  Like others have said, the tin usually interferes with roller lifters, and all four of my FE powered cars have roller lifters, so can't use it on mine, but I would if it fit.  Henry used them for a reason.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Burnout and tire hopping remedy?
« on: September 01, 2023, 02:05:25 PM »
I have Caltracs on two of my Fairlanes and don't recall ever experiencing wheel hop with them, regardless of spring type.  One pulls the wheels hard, runs 9s.  Both currently have Calvert mono-leafs, but no issues before changing out factory multi-leaf springs.

I always use a bit of preload, even if only as much as you can get by hand-tightening them when loaded.  It might ride a bit stiffer, but it takes the slop out of the suspension.

Why in the world are you still running street BFGs?  Dangerous with the power you're car is making and with the TKX.  Swap them for a pair of M/T Street Radial R 275s and you'll find them to be a game changer.  They will also last a remarkably long time so long as you don't do long smokey burnouts.

Did you remove the factory rubber isolators from your springs and mount the pad directly onto the spring?  Also, pad must be braced at the back and should be using 1/2" U-bolts.

FE Technical Forum / Re: locar shifter

What model Lokar shifter did you buy?

I have a Lokar on the 4R70W in my Falcon.  It has the integrated paddle shifter controls.  Not sure that I would go that way again if I had it to do over.  The shifter paddles will control the commanded gear, but doesn't function the same as if you move the lever down to the lower gears.

I have a PF4 on my 363" small block.  Not a bad system, but isn't as flexible or tunable as the Holley systems.  It's a bargain if you don't have a manifold already, but likely won't perform measurably better than the throttle-body setups.

FE Technical Forum / FE C6 won't downshift or kickdown
« on: July 07, 2023, 11:20:54 AM »
I have a TCI street fighter C6 in one of my cars.  It had a column-shift level in it when I purchased it, and I pulled the lever and replaced it with a C6 floor shift lever.  I'm using a Lokar kick down cable.

The transmission works normally in D, but doesn't go into 2 or 1 when the floor shift lever is in that position, nor will it hold in the gear when selected from a stop.  The kickdown doesn't work either.

Suggestions on what I did wrong?

Thanks

Plus, the original 2x4 carbs only had one metering block per carb with the secondary one being a plate.  These have two "blocks" each, plus the cathedral bowls.  Of course, I haven't measured and everything could have been scaled down some.

Pat

I'm way behind the curve on this. Why do we have bowls on an FI unit?

The bowls are simply aesthetic elements to make the unit resemble a Holley carburetor.  They don't hold fuel; but have two fuel injectors on each end hidden inside the "bowl".

I have a single Holley Terminator X Stealth on one of my cars and like it better than the Sniper or Edelbrock setups I have other cars.  I think tunnel-ram style linkage to mount the throttle bodies sideways would need to be well thought out given how sensitive the EFI is to throttle position so the IAC can operate where it should.

The one down side of a TKX vs TKO is the available input shaft lengths.  I'm sure it doesn't matter to many people, but the ability to use your existing bell housing and driveshaft, makes a difference to me.  I'd have already changed to a TKX if the top-loader-length input shaft was available.  Instead I sent my TKO back to Hanlon for a refreshing and the latest upgrades.

Innovator's West offers some very slick solutions for the balancer and crank trigger.

Something best to call and talk to them about as they are made to order.

Plans in the works to apply the boost later and run it again on the dyno?

This first run is just a tease :)

FE Technical Forum / Re: Fe 445 stroker timing chain recommendations
« on: March 13, 2023, 01:00:11 PM »
With a roller cam, there is no taper on the lobes for lifter rotation, so there isn't any significant thrust load on the end plate.  If the needle bearings in the thrust plate fail, then your engine will have lots of little loose hard parts inside.  No such concern with a standard flat plate.

« on: December 06, 2022, 07:12:31 PM »
Blair Patrick built the 445 for my F250 with a very small hydraulic roller.  Smooth idle, stump-pulling torque, good power to 5k.  No lost sleep over whether the cam will fail me prematurely.  I wouldn't go back to a flat tappet, but then I also wouldn't give up my EFI for a carb on an all weather street ride.
