FE Technical Forum / Re: 427 SOHC Gear Drive
« on: March 16, 2024, 03:16:50 PM »
I have done it a couple times.  I convert standard chain sets(top gears) all the time too. It is the same for the Milodon gear drive. Take the top Milodon gear and open up the ID to .999"-1.00" measure your stub cam you have to see which ID you need to go to so that you have a press fit. Have a 3/16" key way broached in 180' off dot. You will need to make new dot also at 180' for the new timing now. On chain style/top gears I have to cut the back step off and make width .825" .Use heat to warm up big gear/ freeze stub shaft and press together ( only your Milodon gear) install stub shaft. Use a large straight edge from other gears and mark stub cam with dye chem and scribe where to distance the drive gear. Go back to oven and freezer and press the drive gear to your scribed line and you are good.No need to pin or bolt, the press and keyway will hold just loke OEM. Then you can assemble and time everything. Here is a picture of one for you. Not my engine ( Dont Drool), but I have done it.

Those will work. Be aware they are Chinese. But, they are the correct basic thread of 7/16" x 20 . Like Cammerfe stated you will need to maybe file the pad flat/90'. Then most important run a 7/16" x 20 tap through each rocker to chase out the interference thread.  Or do these steps and buy a better set.

I got one very close to that. I was the machinist there and made those. I kept making them when they went out of business. The one I have will be the same but without the logo.

FE Technical Forum / My Apologies - Thanks for your support

All -- I recently got hurt and broke my arm. Not going to be a big deal, it will heal soon. But, As one of your supporters and parts suppliers I am falling behind on your orders. It is hard to machine and assemble in a cast. I will get 100% in a month.. I am burning the midnight oil where possible and still turning wrenches. Thanks to those who have been understanding or that have personally reached out for nothing other than to say get well. This forum and FE community is special.

Any pump from my shop has the correct plug in them. The date range of this is recent as in last couple months. I have scene this mainly in M57B, M-57HV and M57. I have NOT scene them in the "A" series yet . Changing over to a screw in style plug is really not possible. The FE pumps have a short spring to begin with. By adding a thicker threaded plug would require a shorter spring and not allow the valve to move far enough to bypass correctly. BTW I have contacted Jay, Brent and Chris/Pond yesterday and shipped them the correct plugs to have on hand for all to have. Still have to make contact with Barry and Blair

FE Technical Forum / Important -- Oil Pump Issues
« on: August 15, 2022, 01:24:32 PM »
Melling has just changed a part on the FE series oil Pumps that is causing an issue. They were recently out of stock of FE pumps due to a lack of supply of the relief valve plug. They found a supply of new plugs, but it is different, it has a small hole in it. People were calling me saying that they called Melling asking whats up. Basically Melling said the plug would be fine and NOT cause an induction of Air into the supply/Pickup side through the transfer port of the pump as it would submerged in oil. Problem is these plugs are 3 inches above the pickup. Most cars leave hard oil sloshes to back, leaving plug void of oil and inducing air. Also cars corner and trucks mud womp. FE guys want as much oil in the pan anyways, restrict things, much less now would have to be worried about a sucking sensation at around the "full" mark. BAD, Very Bad. Dont run these. Either epoxy the hole or call me or one of the other FE builders. I have the proper solid plugs. I would hate to see someone burn up an engine for a small over looked new thing. I will be making contact with Brent, Jay, Barry and Blair. I wiil sent them some plugs from my own pocket, for them to have and give you if you need them or have orders with them for FREE.

I would also Start at the Head Stud. Most FE Guys do not know this but. On original Ford OEM Iron head 9 of the 1/2" head bolt holes are one size. The 10th one that feeds the oil is drilled larger. So this is not a problem for ARP Larger shank stud in iron heads. But when Edlebrock and rest of Aluminum aftermarket heads came out. They missed this on the blueprint and drilled everything same size. Thus a Large shank ARP Stud in a small tight hole blocks the oil passage. This will be the case half the time. If you can remove the head easy, drill the head. If engine in the car, turn down the stud. Then go from there. might get lucky.
