Having purchased header work (Motorcycle) from Stans Headers as well as seen FPA products in the Puget sound area, I just got a few observations.

#1 Well done Stan @ Stans Headers! Enjoy retirement and THANK YOU for supporting all the motorsport folks up in Division 6.
#2 FPA keep on TRUCKIN! Yes the state hates you for living in an area that no longer sees the benefits of a petroleum based transportation hobby.
BUT, someday they will pull their collective brain out of THAT hole. I lived near Cascade Classics in Edgewood who uses plenty of your products.
Order a Bosch Dishwasher (6 month wait).
I feel for ya on the labor pool and wouldn't wish it on ANYBODY.

The Best way to answer that one is to look what was done to IMPROVE the issue and where.IE Expanding the oil galleys at certain places or one of the
Schemes I saw that totally routed the oil through the center cap cross bolts for resequencing the oil route through the block (Prioritizing).
Good question though.

For calibrating ones' sonic tester you want to use:  a like material, that is of a similar thickness to that which is being tested, and of similar shape.  With this in mind, I cut sections of the cylinder wall out of junk blocks and use this to calibrate before each use.  Note that I consider Fe's and S.B.F.'s to be of similar metal, but for example 385 series engines seem to be of harder, cleaner cast material, and many race blocks to be quite different material.    ;)

     Scott.
Great News on the Block. I have an early center oiler that has a thin spot. Lower than the ring land so its alright.
Getting bake to the thickness checker, at an unNamed Aerospace company I worked for I had a crew of inspectors that used a thickness checker to measure skin thicknesses for Engineering repairs. One of the first thing is to validate a known thickness OF THE SAME MATERIAL. AKA 2024 T3 Aluminum, 6061 T6 etc. Straight at the thickness to be measured. (you can make it thicker if you angle it)
That said, now at least you know what ya got.

Give em a call, they probably have the answers to your questions.

It's a weird world I live in, but in picture #2, what do you suppose the old guy is talking about in the background? Doesn't look good....

Pick up the book (BOOKS) because every engine has "tricks" that make it live a better life.
Asking first is the best thing you could have done. Asking on this FORUM was the second best thing.
Check the alignment between the main bearing shell and the block. Make SURE the cam bearings are installed by someone
that KNOWS the correct way to put them in. (Anybody got an extra set?) My dude in Nampa Ideeho clued me in real quick that many of the old blocks cam bearings are no longer all the same size after a few rebuilds so check em out before ordering new ones. The book is your safest bet.

I will keep that in mind, but at this point the Idea is to finish it.
Thanks for the update though.

I have perhaps painted myself into the corner...
I purchased a "Estate sale" Fairlane with no motor or transmission, planning to go with a small block based 427.
But emotions got the better of me and a neighbor sold me a FE 427 with no heads. That said I just read that not all heads will fit in the
'66 engine bay. The internet is full of truths for sure but will a set of E'brock heads fit without cutting the towers? Thanks for any REASONABLE
response and if it can't be reasonable make it funny cause hate don't leave the gate.

Thank you for the response guess I better "Buy the book"
to quote the late great Todd Henning, "If you think my parts just made themselves, you should sort thru the scrap pile in back of my shop"
Thank you FE power for keeping the faith.

The plan is NOT to 1/4 mile Killer Diller but still have a fun, head snappin' 427ci 5spd Fairlane.
That said, I picked up a pair of UNmolested Streetmaster intakes. Does ANYBODY have a link to the mods listed in the other discussions on the forum?
